CANDICE ‘CANDY’ ANN COX MACMILLAN

CAMPOBELLO — Candice “Candy” Ann Cox MacMillan, 40, loving wife of Lonnie MacMillan, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 1, 1982, in Pickens County, Candy was the daughter of J.W. Cox and Judy Reid Newton. Candy “My Little Lady” loved her family dearly, especially her children. She enjoyed sunflowers, leaves when they changed colors and going to the lake.

In addition to her husband and parents, Candy is survived by her children, Katara Ann MacMillan and Braylen Weslee MacMillan; a granddaughter on the way, Naomi-Rose Ann; her parents, J.W. Cox (Mary) and Judy Reid Newton (Wilton); siblings, Tiffany Cox Porter (Chris), Christopher Brown, Matthew Harris (Kristie) and Breanna Greene (Shawn); grandparents, Mattie Reid and Tom John Cox; a special niece, Britney Shea “SheaBay” Tucker; a special nephew, Michael Tucker; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Candy was predeceased by her grandparents, J.B. Reid and Annie Ruth Cox; a brother, Dakota Wesley Cox; an uncle, Larry Cox; and a sister-in-law, Amber Tucker.

Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, March 30, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m.

The husband and children will be at the home, 930 Bradley Dill Road, Campobello, SC 29322.

Flowers will be accepted.

MARY MELINDA ‘LINDA’ MCCALL FERGUSON

PIEDMONT — Mary Melinda “Linda” McCall Ferguson, 72, wife of the late Joe Earl Ferguson, passed away Thursday, March 23, 2023.

Born in Hendersonville, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Joe Butler and Bessie Teague McCall. She was a resident of Piedmont for almost the last 20 years.

Linda loved the beach and spending time with her family. She was a member of Slabtown Baptist Church in Liberty.

Linda is survived by a son, Joe Kyle Ferguson of Piedmont; a daughter, Glennis Cheryl Ferguson Watkin of Sydney, Australia; a brother, Leroy McCall (Patti) of Six Mile; a sister, Martha Faye Rogers of Hendersonville, N.C.; grandchildren, Beatrice Lauren Reynolds and Rhyese Glennis Reynolds; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to give a special thank you to her great-niece, Kathy Clay, who lovingly cared for her at NHC-Anderson.

In addition to her loving husband of 32 years, she was preceded in death by brothers, Richard “Dick” Allen McCall Sr., William “Bill” Ray McCall Sr., and Y.J. McCall; and a sister, Louella Watts.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, Downtown. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at the funeral home.

ROGER MARTIN

ANDERSON — Mr. Roger Caness Martin Sr., 67, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023, at his residence.

Roger was born in Anderson, on Nov. 7, 1955, to Oveline Loftis Martin of Anderson and the late Donald Harrison “Squirrel” Martin. He retired from Ingles Grocery Stores as a manager, and in his free time he enjoyed riding his motorcycle. Roger loved music, especially southern rock, and was an avid bass guitar player in numerous bands throughout the Upstate of South Carolina.

In addition to his mother, Roger is survived by his four children, Latosha Pearson (Jason) of Cumming, Ga., Roger C. Martin Jr. of Six Mile, Dustin Martin (Jamie) of Seneca and Tyler C. Martin of Garner, N.C.; his brother, Don Martin (Debbie) of Anderson; his sister, Donna Kay Tomlinson (Richard) of La France; six grandchildren, Haleigh Pearson, Alexa Pearson, Chandler Martin, Camryn Martin, Caleb Martin and Landon Martin; and one great-grandchild, Ella. He is also survived by his two lifelong friends, Vernon Bennett and Steve Lloyd, both of Anderson.

Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Restoration Church of God, 7505 S.C. Highway 24, Townville, SC 29689.

The family will receive friends at the church following the service on Saturday.

DORIS TURNER WOOD

EASLEY — Mrs. Doris Turner Wood, 83, loving wife of the late William Ralph Wood Sr., passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at her residence.

Mrs. Wood was born in Greenville on Sept. 5, 1939, to the late Lillie Ruth Kelley Turner and William Henry Turner. She enjoyed many things in life, including sewing, cooking and coloring. Mrs. Wood had a special love for all animals, but she especially loved her dog, Yugi. Mrs. Wood was of the Baptist faith and attended Berea First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Wood is survived by her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Whittington of Easley; two grandsons, William Allen Whittington (Shelby) of Easley and Zachary Lee Whittington of Pickens; two granddaughters, Katie Wood Marquis (John Peyton) of Oxford, Miss., and Megan Wood Williamsons (Andrew) of Decatur, Ga.; and a great-grandson, Dean Allen Whittington of Easley. She is also survived by her two brothers, Gene Turner (Shelby) of Easley and Thomas Turner (Jackie) of Dacusville; three sisters, Josephine Granruth (Dave) of Liberty, Arlene Perry (Harold) of Easley and Geraldine Mohr (Dennis) of Baltimore, Md.; and a special friend, Joy Martin.

In addition to her loving husband and her parents, Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by a son, William Ralph Wood Jr.; and five brothers, James Richard Turner, Calvin Turner, Waymon Earl Turner, Hugh Stanley Turner and Oliver John Turner.

Funeral services were conducted on March 24 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

The family is at the residence.

GLADYS NEWMAN

GREENVILLE — Gladys I. Newman, 87, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the room she shared with her late husband, Jerry, on March 17, 2023.

Gladys was born in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, on May 22, 1935, to the late Carlos J. Zambrana and Felicita Roche-Zambrana. She loved nothing more than cooking a Puerto Rican feast for her friends and family while being surrounded by those she loved. Gladys loved to travel with her husband, Jerry, whether it be in the mountains, on the boat named after her or with the motorcycle. She enjoyed a few years of working at her antique mall. Gladys was a homemaker whose No. 1 goal was always to care for those around her. She was both feisty and loving and always offering to make more food. More than anything, she loved her family. Gladys was called home five weeks after her treasured Jerry passed.

Gladys is survived by her daughter, Yvette McKenzie; son, Vaden Newman; granddaughters, Whitney More and Taylor More James; and siblings, Nereida Zambrana-Oswald, Osvaldo Zambrana and Rolando Zambrana.

In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerry Newman; granddaughter, Sydney More; and siblings, Jorge, Isolina, Cesar, German, Carlos and Danny. Funeral services were conducted on March 23 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

MICHAEL GELOLA DAVIS

 

PICKENS — Michael Gelola Davis, 57, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at his residence.

Mr. Davis was born in Pickens on Sept. 6, 1965, to the late Jack Davis and Helen Hendricks. He enjoyed working on and collecting watches and clocks, riding motorcycles, gardening, his chickens and playing the guitar. Mr. Davis was a disabled veteran who proudly served in the United States Navy during Desert Storm.

Mr. Davis is survived by his fiancée, Anita Moore Davis; his mother, Helen Hendricks (John); six children, Dustin Davis (Andrea), Whitney Evett, Matt Davis (Nicole), Chenoa Levis (Dan), Michala Davis and Caleb Davis; 11 grandchildren; and one brother, Roger Dale Davis.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack G Davis.

Funeral services were conducted on March 28 in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, with the interment following at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

The family members are at their respective homes.

DAVID BENJAMIN ‘BOON’ LABOON

EASLEY — David Benjamin “Boon” LaBoon, 58, loving husband of 33 years to Missy LaBoon, entered his Heavenly home on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born on Nov. 7, 1964, in Greenwood, David was the son of the late Elbert “Boonie” Bowers LaBoon Sr. and Frances Sue Greer LaBoon. Mr. LaBoon was a member of West End Baptist Church in Easley. He enjoyed working on cars and watching Clemson football. He loved everyone, especially his family and friends, and loved to help anyone he could.

Survivors include his wife, Missy LaBoon of the home; his children, Tiffany Gutierrez (Jose) of Easley, Jessica Amos of Greenwood and Benjamin LaBoon (Nikki) of Easley; grandchildren, Chloe, Gracie, Camden, Lillie, Gracelyn and Leland; great-grandchildren, Everlynn and Isaac; sister-in-law, Anne LaBoon; and a nephew, Josh LaBoon.

In addition to his parents, Mr. LaBoon was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Ben LaBoon, Louella Bowers Parkins LaBoon and her second husband, Jones Parkins; two grandchildren angel babies, Malachi and Isaac; brothers, Bert LaBoon, Steve LaBoon and Michael Smith; and a sister, Diane Smith Bradley.

A memorial service to honor David’s life was held on March 28 in the sanctuary of West End Baptist Church.

STEVE MASTERS

EASLEY — Jarrett Steven “Steve” Masters, 75, a loving father of two and an adoring husband, died peacefully surrounded by the love of his wife, his two sons and his daughter-in-law on March 20, 2023, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Steve was born on April 1, 1947, in Easley, to Rev. Jarrett Jhue and Lucy Aiken Masters. He was a graduate of Easley High School.

Steve had recently retired after a successful career as an honorable Department of Natural Resources officer and was currently working as a bailiff for the Pickens County courts.

Steve is survived by the love of his life, Ann Garrett Masters, who he shared an amazing love together for 55 years; his two sons, Steven Scott Masters and Richard Jarrett Masters; his loving daughter-in-law, Kristen Rushing Masters; and his beloved granddaughter, Faith Elizabeth Masters.

Besides spending time with his family who he honored and loved so deeply; he had such a love for his time at the gun range.

Steve had such an infectious personality and was known for his kind heart and love of never meeting a stranger. To know Steve was to love him, and that is how he will be remembered.

The family received friends on March 24 at Robinson Funeral Home, with the funeral following in the chapel.

JOEL HOWARD

EASLEY — Joel Anthoney Howard, 66, died on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at Prisma Health-Baptist Easley.

Born in Easley, he was a son of the late Ralph Lewis and Carrie Louise Conley Howard.

During his working career, he worked in paving with his brother, Mike.

Surviving are a brother, Lewis “Pete” Howard (Charlene) of Easley; four sisters, Marlene Mann of Cayce, Oleen Tinsley (Charles) of Valdese, N.C., Deborah Doll-Gibbs of Simpsonville and Catherine Johnson of Easley; a special friend, Martha Dillon of Easley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Linda McWhorter; and a brother, Olin Michael “Mike” Howard.

The family hosted a memorial service on March 23 at West End Baptist Church.

TOMMY PORTER

PICKENS — Tommy Porter, 79, loving husband of 37 years to Joyce W. Porter, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2023, at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A native of Pickens County, Tommy was born on Jan. 6, 1944, to the late Lewis Porter and Jessie Mae Porter. Mr. Porter was a faithful member of Secona Baptist Church in Pickens. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, gardening and going to the flea market.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Porter of the home; his daughter, Kim Shealy (Greg) of Irmo; a granddaughter, Bailey Shealy; a grandson, Bryce Shealy; two brothers, Smith Porter (Connie) and Jim Porter (Martha); a sister-in-law, Judy Pace; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Porter was predeceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bruce and Viola Wright; a niece, Laura Porter; and a brother-in-law, Dennis Pace.

Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Friday, March 31, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. Entombment will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

 

DEBORAH JEAN  ‘DEBBIE’ GALLOWAY

LIBERTY — Deborah Jean “Debbie” Galloway, 72, loving wife of 38 years to the late Boyd Galloway, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023, at her home.

Born on July 23, 1950, in Rosman, N.C., Debbie was the daughter of the late Cyrus Chapman and Lottie Mae Dodson Chapman. Mrs. Galloway was selfless and loved by all who knew her. She would do anything for anyone without expecting anything in return and loved taking care of others. She gave her time to cook for the Hagood Community Center and loved canning for her family and all those around her. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and being a Mimi. She was the best cook and Mimi.

Survivors include her fiancé, Allen Roper of Liberty; her son, David Galloway (Sydney) of Easley; her grandchildren, Livia Galloway, Leila Galloway and Emerson Galloway, all of Easley; a sister, Angie Griffin (Chris) of Hendersonville, N.C.; and a nephew, Eric Morgan of Rosman, N.C.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Galloway was predeceased by two brothers, Lonnie Chapman and Eddie Chapman, both of Rosman, N.C.

Visitation was held on March 27 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, with the funeral service following. Burial followed the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

JOSEPH HENRY CUTCHIN JR.

QUANTICO, Md. — Dr. Joseph Henry Cutchin Jr., 87, passed away at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, after a short illness.

He was the son of the late Dr. Joseph Cutchin and Frances Blackman Cutchin of Easley. He was the grandson of the late Braxton Murray Cutchin and Mary Cutchin of Franklin, Va.

He is survived by his wife, Paige Cutchin; a daughter, Ashley Paige McEwen (Sean) of Portsmouth, Va.; two sons, Joseph H. Cutchin III (Anne) of Hudson, Ohio, and William Marshall Cutchin (Barbara) of Windsor, Colo.; daughter-in-law, Aubrey Cutchin of Nellysford, Va.; eight grandchildren, Max, Quinn, Ellie, Damian, Gavin, Derowen, Wills and Amelia; and two great-grandchildren, Jo-Jo and Blake.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Eloise Marshall Cutchin; and his son, Thomas Cutchin.

Dr. Cutchin graduated from Woodberry Forest Prep School and received his undergraduate from the University of Virginia, where he got to live on The Lawn. He then went to the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston and then back to the University of Virginia for his internship and residency. After training, he went to Quantico Marine Base as a lieutenant commander in the Navy. Upon discharge, he moved to Quantico, Md., to establish his OB-GYN practice and work at the PGH in Salisbury, Md. He delivered babies until 2003, and after that he did primary care as a locum and retired two years ago.

Dr. Cutchin was the first medical director of the Life Crisis Center and helped acquire the land for its safe home. He was the first director of the Delmarva Foundation for Health Care in Easton, Md., and built the first ambulatory surgery center that was AAAHC accredited in Maryland. As well as being chief of staff and chief of the OB department, he was the first president of Maryland’s OB-GYN Society from the Eastern Shore. He brought the first OB-GYN ultrasound to Salisbury, Md.

He was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and a member of the Society of Cincinnati. His hobbies included fishing, flying, his HAM radio W3ETT, his bluebirds and martins and his cats. He was an avid reader of military battles and was an instrument-rated pilot, flying his Cessna 210 732GD for thousands of hours across our great country.

Dr. Cutchin cherished the women in his tri-state community (DE, MD, VA) and loved delivering babies and helping infertility patients achieve their goal.

He was laid to rest at the family gravesite next to his son, parents and grandparents in Franklin, Va., on March 28. DONALD EDWARD BOGGS

PICKENS — Mr. Donald Edward Boggs, 85, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at his residence.

Mr. Boggs was born in Pickens on April 15, 1937, to the late William Levi and Jessie Mae Banks Boggs. He was twice married, first to the late Virginia Ferguson Boggs and then to the late Janie Newton Watson Boggs, and in his free time enjoyed being outside, especially with his horses and beef cattle. Mr. Boggs was truly a hard worker who spent his working career as a tool salesman, and he loved his family, especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was a man who would see a need and fill that need without anyone knowing it, always willing to help others out.  He was very active in Gideons International until his health declined and was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of Praters Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Boggs is survived by his three children, Carol Watson Dozier (Sam), Scott Watson (Teena) and Angela Bryant; his six grandchildren, Kathryn, Sam Jr. (Ashton), Alexandria (Josh), Austin (Brittany), Maggie (Keels) and Chloe; a brother, Tommy Boggs (Nan); and a sister, Martha Leslie.

In addition to his loving wives and his parents, Mr. Boggs was preceded in death by a brother, William Levi Boggs Jr.

Funeral services were conducted on March 26 at the graveside at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

The family members are at their respective homes.
