LINDA SIMMONS YOUNGBLOOD

LIBERTY — Linda Simmons Youngblood, 82, of Liberty, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 22, 2026. Linda was born at Arial Station in Easley, to the late Joseph Rowe “Jaroe” and Maggie Herd Simmons.

While Linda’s physical and cognitive health were failing, she often prayed that God would call her to Heaven to be with Him and family members gone before her. Linda and her family were on vacation to Cheyenne and some of the Wyoming national parks. They took a day trip to the Snowy Range complete with a “required” ice cream stop in Centennial. Linda witnessed God’s awesome wonders of nature and wildlife with snow-covered peaks that seemed to reach Heaven. Her vacation was cut short last Friday when God answered her prayers as they returned through Laramie. No doubt, Linda was much happier seeing Heaven than the Tetons and Yellowstone that she missed.

At 15 years old, Linda left Pickens High School to marry her loving husband David Walton Youngblood and begin their first careers with the Navy. David enlisted, but Linda served too as a devoted wife, mother and supporter of all those who served our country. She wore a memory bracelet and prayed until long after the war ended for a MIA who did not return from Vietnam. For over 20 years, she followed David to ports in San Diego, Newport, Great Lakes, Virgina Beach, and finally back home to the Greenville Naval Reserve Center. Linda made many “Navy Family” friends and maintained contact with them throughout her life.

In the 1970s, Linda and David began their second careers in Pickens County: David in law enforcement while Linda worked at Sangamo and Walmart and later volunteered at Cannon Hospital. With her big smile, Linda was a pleasant face to assist you entering the hospital and at the old Easley Walmart’s registers or as the manager of the fabric and snack shops. When she retired, Linda joined a close-knit group of former Cannon volunteers and their friends who have a standing Friday night date at local Pickens restaurants. Linda was also a proud member of the Pickens View Wesleyan Church from a young adult age to her passing.

Linda is survived by her son Jeffrey Youngblood (Nancy) of Sumter; a sister Betty Gilstrap of Easley; granddaughters Carol Stepanian (Chad) of Sumter and Katie Holcombe of Aliquippa, Pa.; a grandson Austin Youngblood (Savannah) of Easley; granddaughter Madison Youngblood of Central; and many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Because she had missed many family events while living away during those Navy years, Linda enjoyed holiday and special events with her Simmons family, her grandson Austin and his family, and with Jeffrey and Nancy and their family. She loved all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and wanted to see them often. In recent years, she especially enjoyed eating at LongHorn Steakhouse with Madison and Landon.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Michael David Youngblood, and brother Charles Edward Simmons.

The family would like to thank all of Linda’s health care providers. Since January, Linda lived with her niece Susan Simmons (the daughter she and David never had). Honorary “family members” Russell Chambers (her health enforcer) and Mary Evans (her therapy partner) provided daily assistance which will forever be appreciated.

A funeral service was held June 1, at the Mountain View Funeral Home, 105 Florence St., Pickens, SC 29671. A committal service followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2410 Gentry Memorial Hwy, Pickens, SC 29671.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Linda to the Cannon Memorial Hospital Foundation at 123 W G Acker Dr., Pickens, SC 29671 or to the Pickens View Wesleyan Church’s meal programs for shut-ins and funerals at 744 Bethlehem Ridge Rd. Pickens, SC 29671. Online condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting mountainviewfunerals.com.

CYNTHIA RAY

EASLEY— Cynthia Ray entered eternal rest with her Lord and Savior early on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

Cyndi was born on March 8, 1965 in Canton, Mississippi. She moved to Easley as a child and graduated from Easley High School in 1983. Cyndi was a member of Geer Memorial Baptist Church, where she developed a deep love for Christ. Her favorite place to be was on the shores of Edisto Beach. She and her family took a trip there every summer, and her excitement for the next year’s trip began on the drive back home.

She once said, “The greatest legacy we can have in this life, other than leading a God-led life, is our love of family,” and she certainly lived out this testament. Cyndi was her family’s biggest cheerleader and was always there supporting her loved ones through each triumph and hardship.

She is survived by her parents, Linda Jackson (Fred) and Herman Fortenberry (Greta Ann); her brother, Dwight Fortenberry (Tammy); sister-in-law, Melissa Fortenberry; step-sister Leslie L Lawless (Chris); step-sister-in-law, Jill Barr; 11 beloved nieces and nephews along with their spouses; and two great-nephews and one great-niece that brought her so much joy.

Cyndi is preceded in death by her youngest brother, Michael Fortenberry, and step-brother Steve Barr.

The family will be holding private arrangements for Cyndi this weekend.

THURMAN ‘DUNK’ DUNCAN

PICKENS — Thurman “Dunk” Duncan, 99, went to his heavenly home on Friday, May 29, 2026.

Born on April 24, 1927, in the Cowart’s community of Jackson County, N.C., to Lena Mae Nicholson Duncan and Lucius Perry Duncan, Dunk was the last of six siblings – Virgil Kermit Duncan, Robert Duncan, Florence Mae Duncan Lewis, James Leonard “J.L” Duncan Sr., and his twin brother Herman Duncan, Marvin Madden, JT Madden and Paul Lewis, all of whom preceded him in death.

Dunk leaves behind his bride of 75 years, Mary Dorothy “Dot” Madden Duncan. He is also survived by his daughter, Linda Gail Duncan Bagwell, and her husband, Danny “Bo”; his granddaughter, Kerri Bagwell McKinney and her husband, David and his great-grandchildren, Landan McKinney and Sadie McKinney, who brought him the greatest joy of his later years all of Easley. He also leaves behind his son by love, Michael Chapman, also of Easley; and his two sisters-in-law, Yvonne Madden Ross, of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Peggy Cole Madden of Pickens.

Mr. Duncan was a member of Holly Springs Baptist Church in Pickens, South Carolina for many years. The kindness and love he spread will be rewarded with a resounding “Well done, good and faithful servant. Well done”

Mr. Duncan, a veteran, has a military record that demonstrates clearly his love of this country. He served in World War II, then again during the Korean War, in two branches of service – the United States Army and the United States Air Force, and he capped it all off with 10 additional years in the Air Force Reserve. Mr. Duncan represents the very best of a generation that counted it as honor to defend American values.

After the military, Dunk drove an 18-wheeler and didn’t climb out of that cab until he was well into his 80s. He hauled loads across America, down into Mexico, and up into Canada, travelling millions of miles. Incredibly, he did it all without a single accident. Upon retirement, he pulled out of the OJ’s parking lot in Easley, and had his very first fender-bender. He laughed about that story every time he told it. That was our ever-happy Dunk: a man who could drive through three countries without a scratch, only to be undone by a restaurant parking lot and find it hilarious.

Dunk had a legendary sweet tooth. The man could consume incredible amounts of sweets (especially cake and milkshakes) and did not gain a single ounce of weight from any of it. Maybe that’s exactly why he was such a “sweetheart”. If you saw Thurman Duncan, the odds were overwhelming that you saw him talking, laughing and smiling. His disposition was always so humble, friendly and kind to every person who had the pleasure of meeting him.

As his great-granddaughter Sadie put it, with wisdom beyond her years:

“I’m going to miss you more than words could explain, Papa. But through all the heartbreak, I’m so thankful for the peace and assurance of knowing I’ll get to see you again one day. Until then, I’ll make sure to drink a milkshake for you.”

A visitation will be held on June 3 at noon in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home with a graveside service to follow at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mountain View Funeral Home is serving the Duncan family.
