GWYENELL ANN  ‘GWEN’ CARRANZA

LIBERTY — With deeply heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beautiful mama, Gwyenell Ann Carranza, affectionately known to everyone as Gwen, who left us on June 29, 2026, at the age of 61.

Born on April 30, 1965, Gwen was a bright light of love, laughter and pure generosity in this world.

To know Gwen was to feel love in its purest form. She was the best, most loving mama anyone could ever ask for, but her maternal heart didn’t stop with her own children. Gwen was a mama to everyone. Her heart and her front door were always open to anyone in need. Whether someone needed a place to stay, a warm meal, a listening ear or literally the shirt off her back, she gave it gladly and without judgment.

Gwen filled her home with music and joy, loving nothing more than to sing and spend time surrounded by her family. Her greatest treasure in life was her family, especially her “precious grandbabies” and great-grandbabies, who brought an immense amount of pride and happiness to her life.

Gwen is reunited in peace with her father, Ben Willis Howell; mother, Carolyn Elizabeth Hendrix; stepfather, Elmous William Hendrix; and brother, Ben Keith Howell.

Her beautiful legacy of kindness and unconditional love lives on through her surviving family — daughter, Jennifer Vasquez (Daniel); son, Joshua Harrison (Elizabeth); precious grandchildren, Dakota, Nevaeh, Maria, Amaya, Aaliyah and Eliana; great-grandchildren, Patrick and Athena; closest friend, Heather Humphrey; and significant other, Gary Roberson. In addition, a community of extended family and friends whose lives were forever touched by her grace.

Gwen’s laughter, her giving spirit and her beautiful voice will be deeply missed, but the warmth of her love will remain with us forever.

Services were held on July 7 at Dillard Funeral Home and Hillcrest Memorial Park.

BETTY SUE ‘SUSIE’ SHAW

EASLEY — Betty Sue (Susie) Shaw, on the afternoon before her early morning passing on Monday, June 29, was with all three of her children with her grandchildren playing in the yard, exactly as she would have wanted her transition to happen.

Aged 79, Susie was the loving mother of Travis Swann Taylor, Adam Duane Burton and Melissa Darlene Poole. The special loves of her life were her grandchildren, Jonathan Chase Brown, Marissa Sue Brown, Monica Nicole Adams and Adam Duane Dennis; and great-grandchildren, Ashton Poole, Elvin Channing Gibson, Peyton Gibson, Jonathan Chase Brown Jr. and Cianne Brown. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Charlie, Caleb, Benny, Alyssa and Elija.

A sibling in a family of 13 children, family was always first and foremost in Susie’s life, which influenced her early career in healthcare.

A celebration of life was held at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home on July 11.

JAMES RUSSELL JONES

 

EASLEY — James Russell Jones, 63, passed away on Saturday, July 4, at Baptist Easley Hospital.

He was the devoted husband of Amanda Jones, with whom he shared 22 wonderful years of marriage.

Born on July 7, 1962, in Yorktown, Va., James was the son of Ruth Ervin Jones and the late Wilbur Jones. He was a proud United States Marine, a member of Berea First Baptist Church, and a professional wrestler. James was known for his strong work ethic, his love for his family, and his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a sarcastic wit and left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Amanda, and his mother, Ruth Ervin Jones, James is survived by his children, Nekia Wright of California, James Pasco Jones of California, Jarred Jones of Easley and Alliya Jones of Easley; one grandchild; his siblings, Deborah Blanch of Virginia, Wilbur “Ernest” Jones of Virginia, William “Terry” Jones of Virginia and Angela Jones of Virginia; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

PATRICIA ‘PATSY’  MCCLAIN MORRIS

LIBERTY — Patricia “Patsy” McClain Morris, 91, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026.

She was born March 20, 1935, in Anderson County as the oldest of three to Clint and Lois McClain. Patsy attended Emory University and Greenville General School of Nursing, graduating in 1957 to a class later known as the Nifty 50s. Patsy married Bobby Morris on Sept. 10, 1961, and had two children, Amy and Scott.

Nursing was never a profession to Patsy, but rather a calling, with a career spanning 46 years. Her quick humor and skill equipped her to serve in her favorite role as head ER nurse in the first half of her career in Greenville, Easley and Pickens. She continued her calling by bringing her compassion and patience to serve those in need through her work in the home health care service.

While proud of her nursing career, her greatest joy was family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, whose love and joy provided happy and memorable times for generations. She treasured every family gathering, vacations, shopping trips and opportunities to spend time with those she loved. Family was the bedrock and anchor of her world, and she took immense pride in each of their accomplishments.

Patsy’s joyful spirit was reflected in her love of the Christmas season. All year round, her life sparkled with Christmas decorations and music, be it with the sounds from Mannheim Steamroller or Christmas night-lights plugged throughout her home. She relished family gatherings, shopping for and wrapping Christmas gifts and, most of all, giving rather than receiving.

Her other passion was knitting. Her friends and family were often covered in love with the many blankets and baby clothes that she created. A Citadel afghan and a knitted group of Marvel characters for her grandsons were among some of the many gifts she created. She even planned ahead and created baby blankets for future family members to come. Patsy was a lover of lighthouses and collected many displayed throughout her house. She also had an extreme obsession with shopping and was always ready to go at the drop of a hat.

It also must be mentioned her love for her four-legged family member, Coco. Coco brought laughter, cuddles and joy in the last season of her life.

Patsy leaves behind her legacy of love and family. She is survived by her two loving children, Amy Simmons (Stuart) and Scott Morris (Desiree), and she will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Brittany Morris, Don Simmons, Charles Morris, Elizabeth Hurley (Jeremy) and Dylan Morris. She also leaves behind her beautiful great-grandchildren, Makayla Morris, Marissa Morris, Celeste Morris, Ashton Morris, Parker Hurley, Inara Morris and one due in December. She is also survived by her two brothers, Frankie McClain (Marlene) and John McClain, (Liz) along with her niece, Mary-Catherine Riner (Michael), and nephews, Jamie McClain (Christie), Jay McClain (Amber) and Stephen Jackson (Elisa) and their children, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness, compassion and friendship.

Join us as we celebrate Patsy’s life as a beautiful example of selfless devotion-to her patients, her family, her faith and her community. Her kindness and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Patsy loved the spirit of Christmas year-round, so please feel free to wear your favorite Christmas attire to the service. We also kindly ask any nurses to wear their nursing attire or uniforms to the service.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. July 17,  in the Liberty Mortuary chapel.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. July 16 at Liberty Mortuary. A private entombment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

WILLIAM ‘WILLIE’ EDGAR ATWELL

PICKENS — William “Willie” Edgar Atwell of Pickens, passed on July 3, 2026, at the age of 76.

Born on Oct. 30, 1949, Willie was the son of the late William and Mary Atwell.

Willie enjoyed the challenge of transforming individual pieces into models or dioramas or creating life-like train models. His hobby reflected his creativity, persistence and appreciation for fine craftsmanship. He was a member of the Piedmont Scale Model Club, and in 1995 he was a charter member of the Pickens County Model Club. He won many awards throughout his lifetime of being a premier model builder of many types.

Willie is survived by his son, Brian Sherfield; daughter, Angel Sherfield; sister, Sandy Holt (Dan); and best friend, John Higman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Violet Atwell.

DOUGLAS M. DODGENS

EASLEY — Douglas M. Dodgens, 84, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at St. Francis Downtown Hospital in Greenville.

Born on April 22, 1942, in Oconee County, Douglas was the son of the late George Dodgens and Kathleen Bailey Dodgens. He enjoyed watching the Clemson Tigers and Pickens Blue Flame play football, along with watching wrestling. He enjoyed eating grilled cheese at Joe’s Ice Cream Parlor and gravy biscuits and butterbeans. He loved hanging out with his buddies at the Hot Spot, Donnie, Billy, Michael, Todd, Reggie and all of his other friends as well. He worked at Dalton Sawmill for many years, as well as Grant and Durham sawmills. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Pops, we will see you again another day.

Douglas is survived by his daughter, Lois Porter and Stanley of Easley; daughter, Angela Turner (deceased) and Jamie Hamilton of Easley; two grandkids, Justin Porter of Liberty and Camie Turner of Jasper, Ga.; a sister, Doris Ann Pennington of Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his daughter and parents, Douglas was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Dodgens; and sisters, Faye Drummond and Wilma Trotter.

The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.

JOSIE HENDRICKS

LIBERTY — It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Josie Ann Reed Hendricks, 85, of Liberty, who departed this life peacefully on July 7, 2026.

Born on June 21, 1941, in Central, she was the widow of Morris W. Hendricks, to whom she was married to for 65 years, and the daughter of the late William Robert and Essie Bryant Reed. Josie spent her life dedicated to her family and her community.

A proud graduate of D.W. Daniel High School, Josie devoted her career to the textile industry, working as a warper at the J.P. Stevens Dunean Plant. Her industrious spirit and commitment to hard work were evident in every aspect of her life. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Calumet Baptist Church in Liberty.

Josie was an unforgettable presence in the lives of her family. She was a loving mother to her son, Robert Hendricks (Karen), and a doting grandmother to her cherished grandchildren, Taylor Bagwell (Luke) and William Hendricks (Hailey); and three great-grandchildren, Olivia Hendricks, John and Claire Bagwell.

Josie found joy in the simple pleasures of life, particularly in her love for the outdoors, often seen fishing or camping, creating treasured memories with her family under the sun.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Michael Hendricks, and two brothers, George and Johnny Reed.

A celebration of Josie’s life will be held at a later date. A private inurnment will also be held at Westview Cemetery in Liberty.

BILLY ‘BILL’ SIMS EDWARDS

 

EASLEY — Billy “Bill” Sims Edwards, 88, beloved husband of 66 years to Peggy Edwards, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on Oct. 12, 1937, in Marshville, N.C., Bill was the cherished son of the late Curtis Edwards and Veda Sims Edwards.

Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army. He dedicated 35 years of his career to Lance, where he was known for his strong work ethic and commitment. Following his retirement, he continued serving his community by working for 12 years at First United Methodist Church of Easley. Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time with his family, casting a fishing line, tending his garden and studying the history of World War II, a subject that fascinated him throughout his life. Above all, he treasured the time he shared with those he loved.

In addition to his devoted wife, Peggy Edwards, Bill is survived by his grandchildren, Holly Fisher (Steve) of Easley, Chris Edwards of Easley, Corey Edwards of Easley, Brandon Edwards (Hayley) of Mohawk, Tenn., and Mackenzie Edwards of Piedmont; and his great-grandchildren, Joseph Menendez, Carson Menendez, Colton Menendez and Xander Kivett Edwards; and one sister, Brenda Fairbrother of Cary, N.C.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his sons, Derek Edwards and Steven Edwards; and his brothers, Jerry Edwards and Conrad Edwards.

A visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m. July 19 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens with a memorial service to follow at 3 p.m.

ELIZABETH ANN K. SATTERFIELD

LIBERTY — Elizabeth Ann K. Satterfield, 91, loving wife to the late J.C. Satterfield Sr., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Manna Post Acute in Pickens

Born on May 30, 1935, in Pickens County, Elizabeth was the beloved daughter of the late John Lemuel Kay and Eva Wilson Kay. She was a woman of unwavering faith whose love for the Lord was evident throughout her life. Elizabeth was a devoted mother and cherished grandmother who found her greatest joy in caring for her family. She will be remembered for her loving heart, gentle nature and the strong Christian values she instilled in those she loved.

Elizabeth is survived by her son, J.C. Satterfield Jr. of Hope Mills, N.C; grandchildren, Joshua Satterfield (Emily), Jeremy Satterfield, Tyler Satterfield, Aubrey Satterfield and Charlene Crenshaw; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Abel, Abram, Jeremy, Justin and Matthew; great-great-grandchildren, Rylee, Raven, Kristina, Elias and Gantt; brother, David Kay; and niece, Ruth Ann Satterfield.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Satterfield was predeceased by her son, Daniel Satterfied, and her sister, Evelyn Merck.

Visitation will be held from 3-4 p.m. July 30 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home in Pickens, with a memorial service to follow at 4 p.m.

MYRTIS KAY COLLINS

PICKENS — Myrtis Kay Collins, 88, loving wife of 68 years to William E. Collins, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 9, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on April 20, 1938, in Pickens, Myrtis was the beloved daughter of the late John Ed Childs and Beulah Dendy Childs.

Myrtis was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend whose greatest joy was spending time with her family. She was a faithful member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church. She was an avid sports fan who faithfully cheered for the Atlanta Braves, the Dallas Cowboys and the Clemson Tigers. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing softball, and she took great pride in keeping a beautiful yard. Above all, she treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought endless joy to her life.

In addition to her devoted husband, William E. Collins, Myrtis is survived by her children, William Paul Collins (Amy) of Gambrills, Md., Sharon McCall (John) of Pickens, Steven Beck Collins (Cara) of Easley and John Edwin Collins (Sherry) of Anderson; her grandchildren, Shannon Webber (Eric) of Shelby, N.C., Zackary McCall of Pickens, Kelsey Collins (Madison) of Charleston, Ashley Allen (Matt) of Middleburg, Fla., Emma Collins of Green Cove Springs, Fla., Ryan Collins (Brittany) of Marietta and Savannah Collins of Greenville; her great-grandchildren, Brandon, Alexis, Landon, Michael, Ellie and Beau; and her sister, Nancy C. McKinney of Pickens; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Myrtis was preceded in death by her brother, Edwin Childs, and her sisters, Linda Jean Martin and Libby Duncan.

Myrtis will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her warm heart and the many happy memories she created throughout her life. Her legacy of love and devotion will continue to live on in all who knew and loved her.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m.-noon July 15 in the sanctuary of Crescent Hill Baptist Church in Pickens, with a funeral service to follow at noon.

LARRY ‘L.D.’ DAUGHETY

PICKENS — Larry “L.D.” Daughety, 67, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

Born on Oct. 3, 1958, in Jones County, N.C., L.D. was the cherished son of the late Sam and Addie Daughety.

L.D. never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone around him smile. Known affectionately as “Larry the Living Legend,” his quick wit, infectious laughter and larger-than-life personality left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He treasured his family, valued his many friendships, and lived life with a generous heart and unforgettable sense of humor.

He is survived by his children, Addye Daughety and Josh Daughety of Pickens, three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his sister, Betty Michalski; his brother, Lee Daughety; Shawn Jones, who was like a son to him; Gary Evans, who was like a brother; special friends, Wayne, Charles and Terry; a loving ex-wife, Sue Ann Bates; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends who will miss him greatly.

In addition to his parents, L.D. was preceded in death by his brothers, Bob, Sammy, Marvin and P.D. Daughety; and his sisters, Glenda, Dianne, Evon, Peanut and Dusty.

The family will cherish the many memories they shared with L.D. and find comfort in the joy and laughter he brought into their lives.

JIMMIE LEE ROBERTSON

 

GREENVILLE — Jimmie Lee Robertson, of Greenville, previously of Inman, passed on July 2, 2026, at the age of 92.

Born on Aug. 10, 1933, in Pickens he was the son of the late George and Alberta Robertson.

Jimmie honorably served his country in the United States Army before beginning a long and dedicated career with Celanese, where he retired as a dye analyst. A man of Baptist faith, he cherished the values of faith, family and hard work. Jimmie shared many hobbies and interests with his father and had a special bond with both of his parents, lovingly caring for them throughout their later years. Gifted with exceptional mechanical skills, he had a passion for automotive restoration and proudly rebuilt a Model A automobile, a testament to his craftsmanship, patience and dedication.

Funeral services were held on July 8 at the Dillard Funeral Home chapel and Hillcrest Memorial Park.
