SHERRY MATHIS

CENTRAL — Sherry Ford Mathis, 48, of 1082 Maw Bridge Road died Monday at her residence.

Born in Brevard, N.C., she was the widow of the late Timothy Paul Mathis. She was a homemaker and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Surviving are her father, James Ford, Sr. of Bowman, Ga.; her mother and step father, Shirley Webster Radke and Mike Radke of Scottsboro, Ala.; two daughters, Alexis and Lacey Mathis of the home; a son, Devin Mathis of Liberty; a sister, Jennifer Kilgore of Pisgah Forest, N.C.; and a brother, James Ford, Jr.(Teresa) of Piedmont.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Joshua Ford.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mathis were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at Westview Cemetery in Liberty.

CHARLES E. “BIT” MORGAN

 PICKENS — Charles E. “Bit” Morgan, age 91, husband of the late Alma Cantrell Morgan, died Tuesday July 9, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Morgan was born in Rosman, N.C. a son of the late Aurie Chappell Morgan and Luney C. Morgan. Mr. Morgan was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, a veteran of the United States Army.

Survivors include one daughter; Betty M. Stephens (Tommy) of Pickens, one brother; Bobby Morgan, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Graveside Service was 3 p.m. Thursday, July 11 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Manna Health and Rehab, 716 East Cedar Rock Street, Pickens, South Carolina 29671.

CARRIE H. WILSON

EASLEY — Carrie Herd Wilson, 95, of the Arial Community, and wife of the late James Andrew “Andy” Wilson died Tuesday, July 9, 2013.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Vess and Ary Holden Herd. Mrs. Wilson was retired from Alice Manufacturing, Ellison Plant, and attended Arial Wesleyan Church.

Surviving is a daughter-in-law, Charlene Wilson of Pickens; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Mrs. Wilson was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents, husband and siblings, she was predeceased by a son, James Arnold Wilson and a daughter, Barbara Gilstrap.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 12 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

GENE CLONTZ

EASLEY — Calvin Eugene “Gene” Clontz, 72, of Watkins Road, died Thursday, July 11, 2013

Born in Columbus, N.C., a son of the late Edwan and Ethel Pittman Clontz, Gene was formerly employed with Cannon Supply of Greenville and a member of Jones Avenue Baptist Church where he belonged to the Fellowship Sunday School Class.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Massingill Clontz of the home; a son, Ricky Clontz of Pickens; a daughters, Tammy Varner of Easley; a step-daughter, Marie Hatmaker of Follette, Tenn.; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Gene was predeceased by a brother, Charles Clontz.

Memorial services were 2 p.m. Sunday at Jones Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Roger Couch officiating.

DORIS ROWLAND

EASLEY — Doris Ann Howard Rowland, 54, of 303 Old Easley-Pickens Highway, died Thursday at McCall Hospice House in Simpsonville.

Born in Pickens, she was the wife of Michael Rowland of the home and a daughter of the late Gabriel Benson and Esther Ellenburg Howard. She had previously worked at Rosemond Nursing Center in Pickens and loved fishing, gardening and playing with her grandchildren. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Crystal Rowland of Pickens; two sons, Michael Rowland, II of Pickens and Mickey Rowland of Easley; a sister, Dorothy Hendricks of Easley; a brother, Robert Howard of Six Mile; and three grandchildren, Kane, Aubrey, and Nicole Rowland.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rowland were held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial was at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Pumpkintown.

RACHEL E. SMITH

SIX MILE — Rachel E. Ferguson Smith, of 104 Store Trail, at Gap Hill Landing, Six Mile, died Thursday July 11, 2013 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 7, 1928 in Pickens County and was the daughter of the late Andrew Chetam and Pearl C. Ferguson. She was retired a Supervisor of Salem Garment Company in Salem, and Brunswick Yarns Inc. of Pickens. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. Along with her late husband Doyle “SEAB” Smith, owner of Gap Hill Campground and Landing on Lake Keowee, Six Mile. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Up Country Quilters Guild. She loved making and designing quilts, hand stitching pot holders, place mats etc… One of her loves was teaching the lost art of sewing for the home to all young and old. She was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church and the Golden Circle Sunday School Class.

Special thanks to the employees at Manna Health and Rehab in Pickens.

Survivors include a son and his wife; Seaborn Dale Smith and Brenda Sue Smith of Six Mile, two grandsons; Russell Dale Smith and Christopher Ryan of Six Mile, one sister; Mrs. Patricia Holcombe (Gerald) of Pickens.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Smith is preceded by her two brothers; Genar W. Ferguson and Royal K. Ferguson, one sister; Mrs. Nannie Mae Childress all of Pickens.

Funeral Service was Sunday July 14 at 2 p.m. in the chapel, officiated by the Rev. Rick Hayes. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

DAISY LOU HAYES REEVES

PICKENS — Daisy Lou Hayes Reeves, 78, of 313 W. Cedar Rock Street, wife of Phillip A. Reeves died Friday, July 12, 2013.

Born in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Eva Anthony Hayes. Mrs. Reeves was retired from Home Health Care and was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her children, Phillip Reeves of Easley, Denise Raines of Pickens and Barry Layne Reeves of Richlands, Va.; seven grandchildren, Freddy Raines, Maria Raines, Katherine Scheidler, Gregory Reeves, Chelsey Reeves, Matthew Reeves and Rebecca Reeves; five great grandchildren; and two sisters.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, July 16 at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

DONALD “SPEEDY” MITCHELL

SIX MILE — Donald Harold “Speedy” Mitchell, 83, of Aaron Drive, died Saturday, July 13, 2013.

Born in Six Mile, he was the son of the late Ernest Martin Mitchell and Laura Kelly Mitchell. He was a member of Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church where he served as a former deacon. He formerly owned Community Grocery in Six Mile, and served on the Board of Directors of Six Mile Water District 41 years and Town Council for 40 years. He was also instrumental in starting the Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department.

Surviving is his wife of the home, Jeannette Allsep Mitchell; two daughters, Harriett Mitchell and Donna Garrett (Haskell) all of Six Mile; two grandchildren, Mitch Garrett of Six Mile and Laura Stoner of Central; two great grandchildren, Michael Waters and Jeremy Stoner; a sister, Etrulia Edney of Central; and three brothers, Lloyd Mitchell of Central, Franklin Mitchell of Murrells Inlet and Robert Mitchell of Gastonia, N.C.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Leland and Paul Mitchell.

A celebration of his life was held on Tuesday, July 16 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ridgeland Drive Baptist Church Building Fund, 185 Ridgeland Dr., Six Mile, SC 29682.

JAMES W. GRANT

PICKENS — James Wallace Grant, 87, husband of Emma Lou Reeves Grant, died Saturday, July 13, 2013.

Born in Pickens County, he was the son of the late Willie and Olive Grant. Mr. Grant was retired from Milliken in Spartanburg. He was a member of East Pickens Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 67 years is a son, Tony Grant (Regina Puckett); and a sister, Katie Chapman.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, July 16 at 9:30 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

PATRICK GENE RUSSELL

PICKENS — Patrick Gene Russell, age 37, husband of Elizabeth “Beth” Smith Russell died Saturday July 13, 2013 at his home.

Mr. Russell was born in Orangeburg. Mr. Russell was a member of Dacusville Church of God. He loved fishing, bowling, and also building computers. Special thanks to Hospice Care of South Carolina.

Survivors include his wife: Elizabeth “Beth” Smith Russell of the home; two sons: Samuel D. Russell and J. Adam Russell of the home; one brother and sister-in-law: Charlie and Jo Lynn Mills of Travelers Rest; Grandmother: B. Jean Russell of Fountain Inn; many nieces, one nephew, and two great nieces.

Mr. Russell was predeceased by his mother Nancy Russell; grandfather Charles Russell, one aunt: Patty Jean Russell.

Funeral service was Tuesday July 16 at 11 a.m. at Dillard Funeral Home in the chapel. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Easley.
