ERIC HOOPER

CLINTON – Mr. Eric Stanley Hooper, 62, on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2025, received the call to go join the Lord in his room, in the house that Jesus the great carpenter, had finished and prepared for him.

Eric was born in Pickens, on Aug. 31, 1962, to the late Wayne Hooper and Margaret Brittle.  Eric enjoyed playing with his spinning tops, receiving arm and back rubs from everyone, looking at Southern Living Magazines, and being the shredder person at the Whitten Center in Clinton.

Eric is survived by his siblings: JoAnn Steinseifer (David), Kenneth Hooper (Gina), Brian Hooper, Sonja Green (Katrina) and Tara Johnson (Micah); nine nieces and nephews: Candace, Christine, Stanley, Nicholas, Amanda, Ariana, Derek, Chase and Job; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

The family would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the staff of unit 108 and the administration of Whitten Center, with a special thank you to Eli, Stephanie and Christy.

A graveside service took place on Aug. 23, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, located at 2410 Gentry Memorial Hwy Pickens.

Honorary pallbearers will be his roommates of Unit 108 at the Whitten Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in honor of Eric, to the Whitten Center, located at 28373 Hwy 76 East, Clinton, SC 29325.

SHAWN PAUL MATHIS

CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — Shawn Mathis, 52, passed away on Friday, Aug. 15, 2025, in Mecklenburg County, N.C.

Born on Jan. 28, 1973, in Gaston, N.C., Shawn was the son of William Frank Mathis and Dorthy Ann Moxley.

Survivors include his children, Christopher Mathis of Greenville, William Mathis of Denver, Colo., Cheyeanna Mathis of Walhalla and Kassidie Rogers of West Union. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amilya Rogers and Declan Rogers, as well as his brother, Rusty Mathis.

Mr. Mathis was predeceased by a sister Angelica Mathis and a brother Johnny Dean Mathis.

Mountain View Funeral Home is serving the Mathis family.

 

THOMAS MICHAEL DURHAM

SENECA — Thomas “Michael” Durham, 37, of Seneca, entered into eternal rest at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025.

Born on July 13, 1988, in Easley, Michael was the beloved son of the late Tommy E. Durham, Connie Clark and his stepfather Russell Clark. He will be remembered for his kind heart, love of the outdoors, and his strong faith in his Lord and Savior. Michael especially enjoyed fishing and found peace in nature. He worked as a dedicated tow truck driver for Jim’s Auto, where he was known for his hard work and reliability. Above all, Michael cherished his family and the time he spent with them.

Michael is survived by his children, Gracie Seigle of Liberty and Tristan Durham of Six Mile; his siblings, Allison Whiten, Cody Smith, Stephanie Ledford and Callie Mauldin; his grandmother, Nancy Durham; aunts, Suzie McCoy (Mike), Phyllis Simpson and Renee Frazier; uncle, Charles Owens; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews who will miss him deeply.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Donnie Durham, and grandmother, Margaret Soulsby.

The family hosted a Memorial Service on Aug. 26, at Mile Creek Baptist Church.

The Durham family is being cared for by Mountain View Funerals and Cremations.

JON H. THOMPSON

PICKENS — Jon H. Thompson, 78, loving husband of seven years to Jean H. Thompson, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at his home.

Born on Oct. 10, 1946, in Denton, Texas, Jon was the beloved son of the late David Ambrose Thompson and Margaret Elizabeth Burroughs Thompson. A man of faith, he was a devoted member of Russell Community Church in Greenville.

Jon dedicated his life to education, shaping minds and inspiring others as both a professor of architecture and mentor. His love for words extended beyond the classroom, as he also expressed himself as a writer and published author.

A man of many talents, Jon found great joy in tending to his yard and garden, where he nurtured life and beauty with his own hands. Gifted with an eye for design, he was a skilled architect who proudly remodeled his own home, leaving behind a personal legacy of creativity and craftsmanship.

Those who knew Jon will always remember his warm sense of humor, his welcoming spirit, and his deep love for people.

Survivors include his wife, Jean H. Thompson of the home; brother, Dan Thompson (Joan); sister, Janet Masters; nephews, Nathan Masters (Ashley), Adam Masters (Kaylee) and Jack Thompson; great-nieces and great-nephews, Alden, Eli, Violet and Ridge.

Mr. Thompson was predeceased by his parents, David Ambrose Thompson and Mary Elizabeth Burroughs Thompson.

A memorial service will be held on Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jon’s honor may be made to Russell Community Church, 200 Agnew Rd, Greenville, SC 29617.

GREGORY CHARLES GRINDSTAFF

PICKENS — Gregory Charles Grindstaff, age 69, loving husband of 30 years to Gail Looper Grindstaff, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 22, 2025.

Born on January 11, 1956, in Greenville County,  Greg was the son of the late Charles Alfred Grindstaff and Mary Ruth Holloway Grindstaff. He retired from Trehel Corporation.

Greg was a man of great faith. He had many interests and hobbies. He particularly enjoyed listening to music and playing his guitars. Greg also loved birding, growing beautiful flowers and long walks in the woods observing nature and forest life, an interest he shared with his girls.

In addition to his wife, Greg is survived by his daughter, Ashley Kathryn Lamb; granddaughter, Grayson Kathyrn Lamb; sister, Evelyn Grindstaff Nease (Jim); sister-in-law, Judy Looper Wood; and nieces and nephews, Connie Hart (Keith), Gary Nease (Susie), Mark Vaughan (Tiffany), Gina Burrell (Chris), Ben Ferguson (Stella White), and Graham Sizemore (Rick).

In addition to his parents, Mr. Grindstaff was predeceased by his sister, Carole Grindstaff Vaughan, and nephew, Michael Vaughan.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 29 at 11 p.m. in the sanctuary of Secona Baptist Church in Pickens.

Memorials may be made in Greg’s honor to the charity of your choice.
