Easley High School to induct Hall of Fame class this week

EASLEY — Easley High School will induct four new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame during half time of this week’s Easley-Hanna football game at Easley High School. Keith Godfrey, Ron C. Hicks, Stanley “Beetle” Wilson and Sammy Owens have been selected for induction.

Keith Godfrey: A 1968 graduate of Easley High School, Godfrey was a member of the 1967 AA State Championship Football Team. He was named the 1967 Green Wave Lineman of the Year while being named the Greenville News Player of the Week against Belton-Honea Path. Godfrey was also a member of the Green Wave Track team for 4 years where he participated in the Pole Vault, Hurdles, Shot Putt, Discuss, and Relay Teams. Godfrey also served as a Coach at Woodmont High School where he coached Football, Basketball, Baseball and Weight Lifting. He also worked for a company who serviced Nursing Homes and the South Carolina Rehabilitation Center. He has retired but continues to work part-time for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation. He is married to the former of Ann Mitchell of Piedmont and they have three children and six grandchildren.

Ron C. Hicks: A 1969 graduate of Graniteville High School, Coach Hicks moved on to USC-Aiken where he played basketball from 1969 to 1971. After receiving his Associates Degree from USC-Aiken he moved to USC-Columbia where he graduated in 1973. Hicks began his coaching career at Lower Richland High School coaching Boys Basketball, Football, and Tennis. He became the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Landrum 1976 before becoming the Head Coach at Easley in 1981. He served as the Head Coach at Easley from 1981 to 1997.

He also served as an Assistant Football Coach at Easley from 1981 to 1998 while also coaching track, and serving as the staff trainer from 1981 to 1995. Hicks also served as an Assistant Athletic Director at Easley from 1997 to 1999. In 1999 he was named the Head Basketball Coach and Assistant Football Coach at Fort Dorchester High School until 2005.

Hicks coached in the 1986 Palmetto State Games and served as a coach in the 1987 International Basketball League in London, England. He was recognized as Coach of the Year in 1978, 1980, 1981, 1987, and 1990. He was an Assistant Coach for the North Team in the 1994 SCACA All Star Game and the Head Coach for the South in the 2002 All Star Game.

He also served as the Coach for the South Carolina Team in the 2004 Carolinas Classic vs. North Carolina. Ron was a member of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association from 1974 to 2005 and was a Charter Member of the South Carolina Basketball and Football Coaches Associations.

He served as the President of the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association during the 1996 -1997 School Year and served as a Region Representative from 1987 to 1997.

Listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers in 1994 and 1996, Ron taught Biology, Physical Education, Media Specialist Instructor and Career Development Teacher at Lower Richland, Landrum, Easley, Fort Dorchester, and the Academy of Arts, Science, and Technology in Myrtle Beach. He is married to the former Jo Ann Smith of Simpsonville and they have two children and five grandchildren.

Sammy Owen: A 1989 graduate of Easley High School, Owen was the 1989 AAAA State Champion in the 3200 Meters. He was a member of the Green Wave Cross Country Team from 1983 to 1988 where he was the Pickens County Champion in 1986, 1987, and 1988; a state qualifier in 1986, 1987, and 1988, All Region in 1986, 1987, and 1988; and All State in 1987. He was also named the Easley High Cross Country Most Valuable in Cross Country in 1986, 1987, and 1988. Sammy was a member of the Green Wave Track Team from 1984 to 1989 where he was All State in 1988 and 1989 and also named the Green Wave Most Valuable in Track in 1987, 1988, and 1989.

Owen was named Coach of the Year in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2009. He served as Vice President of the South Carolina Track and Cross Country Coaches Association from 2004 to 2008. In 2009, Sammy served as the Interim Pastor at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Clemson. Owen is married to the former Melissa McClure of Batesburg-Leesville and they have two children.

Stanley “Beetle” Wilson: A 1965 graduate of Easley High School, “Beetle” lettered in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. He was a member of the North Team in the 1965 South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association North-South All Star Football Game. He signed a football grant with South Carolina. Wilson was also a member of the Easley American Legion Post 52 Baseball Team. He was a member of the Southern Textile League in 1962, 1963, 1964, and 1965. He was named All Southern Textile League “C” Team and was a member of the Saco Lowell “A” and “B” Teams in the Southern Textile League where he was named to the All Southern Textile League Team. Wilson is a Master Mason and Shriner. He is married to the former Patsy Johnson of Central and they have two children and five grandchildren.
