Spartanburg — Former longtime Easley mayor Bill Carr died Monday at Spartanburg Regional Hospice House.
Carr, who was a former head football coach at Liberty High, Easley High and Spartanburg High, served as mayor of Easley after his retirement from coaching, leading the city from 1983 until 1999.
A former winner of the Order of the Palmetto and Silver Crescent, Carr was also on the board of directors of Peoples National Bank.
Carr was a graduate of Erskine College and earned his Masters degree from the University of Georgia.
After starting his football coaching career at Liberty High in 1948, Carr moved to Easley High in 1957, leading the Green Wave to the 1962 State Championship in 10 seasons. As head coach of Spartanburg High, where he won more than 100 games, Carr was named the National High School Coach of the Year in 1978.
For his accomplishments as a coach, he was inducted into the South Carolina Coaches Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. Carr is also a member of the Easley High School Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the Easley Civic Hall of Fame.
Carr is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris Lewis Carr, as well as daughters Pam Carr and Kitty C. Smith and husband Steve. He is also survived by two grandsons, Brandon and Alex Smith, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Easley, with the Rev. Dr. John Adams and Mr. Rut Galloway officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery in Liberty.
Former coaches and players of Liberty High School, Easley High School and Spartanburg High School are asked to serve as Honorary Escorts.
The body is at Robinson Funeral Home-Powdersville Road, Easley and will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, where the family will receive friends from 2-3:45 p.m. in the church narthex, prior to the service.
