LWV chapter to meet on Oct. 17 at Clemson UMC
CLEMSON — The League of Women Voters of Oconee and Pickens Counties will hold its monthly meeting from 7-8 p.m. Oct. 17.
The program is “The Supreme Court: What’s Ahead,” presented by Chip Stapleton, a retired government relations consultant and former chairman of the Clemson University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
The meeting will be held at Clemson United Methodist Church, 300 Frontage Road. The public is welcome.
6th annual Meals on Wheels glow run set for this weekend
LIBERTY — Pickens County Meals on Wheels will host its sixth annual glow run 5K this Saturday, Oct. 14.
The race will take place in front of the McKissick Center on S.C. Highway 93 and end at the rear of the PCMOW building on Edgemont Avenue. A glow attire contest will be planned at 7 p.m., with participants encouraged to be creative with their glow attire. The timed race will begin at 7:30 p.m., and walkers are welcome to follow in the rear of the lineup. First, second and third place will be awarded for males and females in three age categories. A post-race snack will be provided along with a “selfie-station” with UV lighting.
PCMOW is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making sure that no senior is left isolated or hungry.
The organization’s budget relies on fundraising and donations to help continue to provide meals and a friendly safety check to the county’s homebound seniors.
It’s never too late to learn
Growing older is not an excuse to stop advancing in our faith and our prayers.
Confess that you have energy and stamina, a sound mind, spiritual discernment and a desire to live an active life. If you have worries, give them over to God and trust that His promises to protect and take care of you are true. If you feel you’ve lost your sense of purpose, God can help you get back in the race and find personal fulfillment that can restore confidence and feelings of self-worth. When we lose our fervency, we stop living. Studies have shown that continuing to learn and develop can not only enhance our lives, but possibly add to our longevity as well.

PICKENS — Mrs. Gertrude Simmons Hughes, 98, loving wife of the late Ellis A. Hughes, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 
26, 2023, at her residence.
Mrs. Hughes was born in Pickens County on May 12, 1925, to the late Earlie and Ollie Hudson Simmons. She retired from Swirl, Inc. and was a member of Bethany Church of God.
