Leveling the playing field

Dear Editor,

“Bad leadership” are the words used by the opposition party in reference to a president. Basically, it means they don’t think the person has the qualities required to be president, supposedly. It is only another way of saying they don’t like the opposition politics.

During an election cycle, which seems to never really end these years, it is more of the same old negative talk about the other party’s candidate. Which brings to mind that one side says mostly bad things about the opposition because they can’t say all that many good things about themselves. But that’s another topic. It is true that bad leadership in the nation’s government, both the presidency and the Congress, is

Love your neighbor

It would be safer to write about the drama unfolding outside my house lately — a ferocious love triangle between three cardinals.

It’s a controversy that seems to have no easy resolution.

Likewise the hot-button issue that I will attempt to address here, although it’s not nearly as simple or safe to write about.

Gender dysphoria.

I suspect that in terms of the number of individuals who suffer from this condition, the issue is

The truth is out there

John Miller was a printer. He printed the London Evening Post and the London Courant. Being a printer in England was not an easy job, especially if you disagreed with the king. Miller was outspoken about government corruption, voiced his pro-American views and longed for freedom of the press. Miller was charged with

Life is an ongoing transformation process

I was at my daughter’s home a few years ago doing some painting, and yes, these are things that retired fathers are happy to do. She was in another room organizing a closet while listening to some music, and the Michael Jackson song, “The Man in the Mirror” was playing. I listened intently. Certain songs occasionally stick in our

MARGARET ELLEN WALDROP

PICKENS — Margaret Ellen Waldrop, 84, loving wife of John “Bud” Waldrop, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2023, at her residence, surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Waldrop was born in Pickens on May 21, 1938, to the late Clyde David and Annie Mae Anderson Roberts. She retired from Alice Manufacturing at the Elljean Plant and enjoyed being involved at her church, Pickens View Wesleyan, and supporting them in whatever role she could. Margaret loved traveling, especially to the beach, and cooking for her family every Sunday, but “Nanny’s” passion was taking care of her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

In addition to her loving husband, Bud, of 66 years, Mrs. Waldrop is survived by her four

Local historian dives into one of city’s prominent early 20th-century businesses

By Barry Crawford
Special to The Courier

Editor’s note: In anticipation of the first-ever Pickens Bottle Show, planned for Saturday, Jun 3, at the Market at the Mill in Pickens, local historian Barry Crawford allowed the Courier to run this story about Pickens Bottling Works, which was located at the corner of Garvin and Main Street in downtown Pickens near the current location of the Courier office. This story is edited from a December 2017 Facebook post made by Crawford, who is also the facility manager at Market at the Mill.

Let me start by telling you this has been one of my favorite historic projects of all time.

This incredible adventure has taken me all around this country coast to coast, with one of my major sources of information being found in Bakersfield, Calif. I’ve been working on this project for almost 10 years, gathering all of the photos and

Memorial Day service planned May 30 in downtown Six Mile

SIX MILE — The town of Six Mile, along with Fleet Reserve Branch #15 and the Pickens County Veterans Council, will hold traditional Memorial Day services in downtown Six Mile on Tuesday, May 30, to remember those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of service and to honor those who have served their country.

The day’s events will begin outside Six Mile Town Hall by placing the American flag at half-staff at 8 a.m. A traditional service will be held at 11:45 a.m. outside Six Mile Town Hall, including the pledge, invocation and remarks to honor all who gave their lives in service to the United States. This includes Pickens County’s four Medal of Honor recipients — all of whom were from the Six Mile area, making it the most per capita in the United States. A wreath presentation and flag ceremony will be followed by the playing of taps, and the closing will take place afterward.

The Fleet Reserve Association represents a community of the Sea Services — the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel. FRA’s guiding principles are loyalty, protection and service to their shipmates.

The Pickens County Veterans Council (PCVC) is an organization consisting of representatives of recognized veterans’ groups and organizations in Pickens County. PCVC supports recognized veterans service organizations in the county and assists in communication, coordination, and execution of veterans related activities and patriotic events.

Harden Scholar

The scholarship committee of the Cannon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently announced Jacob Charles Santeler as the winner of the 2023 Dr. John Harden Scholarship. Santeler is a senior at Pickens High School and is involved in his school and community. Santeler joined the Boy Scouts in 2016. He set a goal for himself to achieve Eagle Scout, and in August 2021, he achieved that goal. Santeler will be attending the Citadel in the fall, where he will be majoring in nursing. He also plans to commission in the United States Air Force as a pararescue officer. Santeler exhibits excellence in academics, attitude and achievements, and the scholarship committee wishes to congratulate Santeler and wish him much success in his health care and United States Air Force career.

The Charles F. Rogers Scholarship committee recently announced Pickens High School senior Katherine Sanchez as the 2023 selection for the Charles F. Rogers Scholarship Award. Sanchez will receive a $1,000 scholarship to put toward her college education. “Congratulations to Katherine for representing our basketball program and for her perseverance to achieve success on and off the court,” the committee said.
