Pieces of Pickens history
Local historian dives into one of city’s prominent early 20th-century businesses

Editor’s note: In anticipation of the first-ever Pickens Bottle Show, planned for Saturday, Jun 3, at the Market at the Mill in Pickens, local historian Barry Crawford allowed the Courier to run this story about Pickens Bottling Works, which was located at the corner of Garvin and Main Street in downtown Pickens near the current location of the Courier office. Memorial Day service planned May 30 in downtown Six Mile
SIX MILE — The town of Six Mile, along with Fleet Reserve Branch #15 and the Pickens County Veterans Council, will hold traditional Memorial Day services in downtown Six Mile on Tuesday, May 30, to remember those who have sacrificed their lives in the line of service and to honor those who have served their country.
The day’s events will begin outside Six Mile Town Hall by placing the American flag at half-staff at 8 a.m. A traditional service will be held at 11:45 a.m. outside Six Mile Town Hall, including the pledge, invocation and remarks to honor all who gave their lives in service to the United States. This includes Pickens County’s four Medal of Honor recipients — all of whom were from the Six Mile area, making it the most per capita in the United States. A wreath presentation and flag ceremony will be followed by the playing of taps, and the closing will take place afterward.
The Fleet Reserve Association represents a community of the Sea Services — the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard personnel. FRA’s guiding principles are loyalty, protection and service to their shipmates.
The Pickens County Veterans Council (PCVC) is an organization consisting of representatives of recognized veterans’ groups and organizations in Pickens County. PCVC supports recognized veterans service organizations in the county and assists in communication, coordination, and execution of veterans related activities and patriotic events.
Harden Scholar
The scholarship committee of the Cannon Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently announced Jacob Charles Santeler as the winner of the 2023 Dr. John Harden Scholarship. Santeler is a senior at Pickens High School and is involved in his school and community. Santeler joined the Boy Scouts in 2016. He set a goal for himself to achieve Eagle Scout, and in August 2021, he achieved that goal. Santeler will be attending the Citadel in the fall, where he will be majoring in nursing. He also plans to commission in the United States Air Force as a pararescue officer. Santeler exhibits excellence in academics, attitude and achievements, and the scholarship committee wishes to congratulate Santeler and wish him much success in his health care and United States Air Force career.
Winner honored
The Charles F. Rogers Scholarship committee recently announced Pickens High School senior Katherine Sanchez as the 2023 selection for the Charles F. Rogers Scholarship Award. Sanchez will receive a $1,000 scholarship to put toward her college education. “Congratulations to Katherine for representing our basketball program and for her perseverance to achieve success on and off the court,” the committee said.
