Area groups discuss SNAP

COUNTY — Nearly 20 dozen area organizations and groups met last week to discuss and coordinate response to the stoppage of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the ongoing shutdown of the federal government.

Although recent judicial rulings could see SNAP benefits restored this month, it remains to be seen if and when that will occur in November.

UCM aid needs soar

COUNTY — A single mother of young kids fleeing an abusive relationship, low on funds and trying to cover the costs of her new apartment until she receives the first paycheck from her new job in Powdersville.

Former Easley mayor faces ethics complaint

STATE — The South Carolina Ethics Commission held a hearing last month about an ethics complaint filed against former Easley Mayor Butch Womack in 2022.

American Legion set to honor fallen Pickens native, WWII vet.

BELTON — The American Legion of Belton is honoring the memory of Pickens native, Rev. Horace Edward Gravely who perished in the North Atlantic on Feb. 7, 1943 as a chaplain aboard the USS Henry Mallory, on Veteran’s Day.

The first surviving son of A. W. and Betty McKinney Gravely, he graduated from Pickens High School (delayed by the accidental death of his father in 1918) and of Wofford College in 1927. He entered the Upper South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South the next year and served appointments

Thank God we were poor

Mark 14: 7 “Jesus saith, For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.”

Children in the 1950’s mostly grew up in limited environments. That’s a politically correct way of saying we were “dirt poor.” As a child I did not realize how hard the struggle was for my dad to put food on the table for our family.

There was no such thing as politically correct then because very few, if any, had time to consider being offended by someone’s opinions, beliefs or words. The men worked and mothers stayed home and cared for the house and children. There were no social programs to finance

Getting through the shut down

At this writing, several weeks into the government shutdown, the VA has not been immune to the effects of it. We don’t know how long it will go on, but the VA is doing all it can for veterans.
