Pickens High School names Scholar Athletes

Freda Ruiz and Nicholas Alexander were selected as the March Scholar-Athletes of the Month at Pickens High School. Ruiz is a member of the track team and was nominated by Lisa Furr. She is the daughter of Nazario and Rosario Ruiz. Alexander is a member of the tennis team and was nominated by coach Chad Seaborn and Lisa Hiott. He is the son of Billy and Lori Alexander. Scholar-athletes are nominated by their teachers for academic excellence and outstanding leadership inside and outside of the classroom.

Benefit planned May 6 to help Michelle Turner

PICKENS — A benefit for Michelle Turner, who was diagnosed with cancer four years ago, will be held on May 6.

The benefit will be held at Amazing Grace Fellowship.  There will be a vendor/yard sale beginning at 8 a.m. and running until about 3 p.m.

A hot dog sale is planned from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

A singing featuring Heart Sound will start at 6 p.m. Other activities will include a raffle for baskets. Ticket sales will start at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 6.

Turner has recently been told that she only has two months or less to live. She will be leaving a son behind. The benefit is being held to help with any finances the family may endure.

Grace Fellowship Church is located at 229 Pearl St. in Pickens.

Meg Garner cuts the ribbon at her new family-owned restaurant, Mama Megs’ Country Cookin’ — a meat and three restaurant located at 203 Farrs Bridge Road in Pickens. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday 6:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and on Sunday 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Check the Facebook page for specials. Brezeale honored

Sidney Marie Brezeale of Sunset, left, received Tri-County Technical College’s Outstanding Veterinary Technology Student Award at the College’s annual awards ceremony recently.  Presenting the plaque is Ashley Brady, Veterinary Technology department head.

Garrison wins contest

Ava Garrison, a fifth-grader at East End Elementary School in Easley, won the South Carolina Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American history essay contest. She was honored at the S.C. DAR state conference recently. Her parents, Brett and Lauren, attended the luncheon with her. Fort Prince George Chapter DAR sponsored her for the award.
