Nonprofit collecting items for stockings

COUNTY — A local nonprofit is collecting items to be put in Christmas stockings for the elderly.

Members of Warmth and Comfort for the Elderly in Upstate SC use their crochet skills to provide warm items for nursing home patients, hospice groups, home health patients and elderly people who live at home and can’t afford them.

They also hold regular donation drives.

“During the month of August, we will begin collecting toiletries and Christmas stockings for our Christmas stockings to the elderly,” said Tammy Ferguson, the group’s CEO. “We prefer smaller sizes so we can place more items in the stockings.”

The group is collecting body lotions, hand lotions, body wash (no bar soaps), shampoos, conditioners, deodorant, combs, brushes, small mirrors, toothpaste, tooth brush, denture cleanser, individual Kleenex packages, hand sanitizers, pens, pencils, small notepads, soft individual mints, meltaway chocolates, costume jewelry and men’s handkerchiefs.

“We will collect these items through Dec. 1,” Ferguson said. “We’ll also fill any needs of the facilities as requested during the month.”

Drop-off sites are the YMCA in Pickens, in Easley at Under the Carolina Moon and Integrated Yoga Therapy, in Powdersville at Front Porch Fixins and in Dacusville/Easley at Earthworks Unlimited.

For more information about the group, email warmthandcomfort@gmx.com or call 668-1021. Learn more about the group at its Facebook page.

CLEMSON — Pickens County Council District 1 Republican candidate Brad White, who will face Democrat Claiborne Linvill in the November general election, said his professional background is in transportation planning and data collection.

He said he feels he could bring that expertise to county council if elected, considering issues the county is facing in that area.

“I know roads, I know infrastructure and want to protect the integrity of (U.S. Highway) 123,” White said. “It seems like Clemson, for 10 years or so, has

CLEMSON — Clemson resident Claiborne Linvill feels Pickens County has come a long way in her 15 years as a resident.

The desire to see progress continue is one of the reasons why she is running for the District 1 seat on Pickens County Council in the November general election.

Linvill, a Democrat, and Brad White, a Republican, both ran unopposed in their primaries. The winner will succeed two-term

Unity is the means of healing our world

Unity is a much talked about ideal, and like many ideals, it may appear to be unrealistic or unattainable. But what is unity, and can it exist? Well, if we reflect a little, we can see that in fact, unity is everywhere around us.

From the smallest atoms to the largest stars, there is a oneness and wholeness, harmony and interconnectedness of everything in the universe operating with perfect order and precision. In fact, the word universe means “out of many, all things, turned into one whole.”

Unity, or oneness and wholeness, is the essential and fundamental characteristic of creation, because without it,

Our character reflects the things we love

Most of us have heard that having lots of money cannot buy love or bring happiness. Since I’ve never been mega-wealthy, I will trust God on this one.

Most people are trying to build financial security, but it’s also common for those who succeed to encounter frustration and disappointment. Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 gives us this divine insight, “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them, and what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them? The

New number for suicide crisis line

Across the country there is a new mental health suicide and crisis line phone number: 988. The Department of Veterans Affairs has merged services with that number to provide an additional resource for veterans to call when they’re in crisis.

A result of the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020, the bill was passed and signed off as law. It’s startling, however, to learn that this bill was first created and sponsored by 34 U.S. senators in 2019. (You can go here to learn whether your state’s senators were among those

EASLEY —After letting a six run lead slip away to force extra innings, S.C. District 1 seemed to have lost all of the momentum they built early on against Western regional champion Central East Maui on Tuesday afternoon.

However, for the second time in the tournament, District 1 was able to pull it out in extra innings behind a career day from Kaleb Owens.  In addition to bringing home five runs in the batter’s box, Owens also scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth after coming home on bloop single by Cole Davis
