CENTRAL — Up 14-0 three minutes into the first quarter, the second-ranked Daniel High School football team seemed poised to bring its non-conference domination into region play against Palmetto on Friday night.
However, the Mustangs had other plans, fighting back from the early deficit and giving the Lions their biggest scare of the season before Daniel quarterback Tyler Venables helped his team hold on for a 49-42 win at Singleton Field.
The Mustangs (4-2, 0-1 Region I-4A) were behind the entire game but clawed their way back, scoring on the final play of the third quarter to make it a 35-21 game entering the fourth.
The Mustangs were close to completing their comeback twice in the final frame. However, Venables, who finished the game with five passing touchdowns and one on the ground, answered the call for the Lions (5-0, 1-0)
