‘Every quilt tells a story’
Heirloom immortalized outside chamber office
If thread could talk, the newest entrant into the Upstate Heritage Quilt Trail would surely have some colorful stories to tell.
Running through its many squares and snowflake patterns of 
brown, pale yellow and blue, I think I can hear the rumble of cannon fire in the distance and possibly the weeping of young widows whose husbands wouldn’t be returning from the battlefields of the War of Northern Aggression.
Then again, it may be just the whistling of a cold winter wind blowing bitterly against the drafty walls of a Pickens County homestead. That quilt, now worn thin and a bit threadbare in places, must have provided warm comfort to many of the ancestors of Dean Dykes over the past century and a half.

Man faces child porn charges
PICKENS — A Pickens man was arrested last week on three child pornography-related charges.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said 45-year-old David Michael Dare is charged with three counts of third-degree sexual exploitation by a minor. Each count is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, Wilson said.

Easley attempted murder suspect arrested in NY
NEW YORK — A man wanted for attempted murder in Pickens County was arrested last week in New York, according to U.S. Marshals.
Peter Jamel Stokes, 36, was wanted by the Easley Police Department on charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a firearm/ammunition with conviction of a violent crime, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
The charges stem from an altercation on Davis Street in Easley on May 6, 2017, the release said.

County donates $57K toward renovating Pickens landmark

PICKENS — One of the most well-known places in Pickens is about to get a facelift, as the legendary Bruce Field will soon see renovations.
On Friday, Pickens County Councilman Wes Hendricks was at the old stadium with check in hand as he presented Pickens Recreation Department director Cheri Anthony with $57,000 earmarked to renovate the 
stadium that has been a staple of downtown Pickens for more than 65 years.

Hells Angels hold rally in Clemson
CLEMSON — Those traveling through Clemson this week may notice an increased law enforcement presence throughout the city, as police try to limit disruptions from a visit from the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.

Fox tests positive for rabies after attack

PICKENS — A person in Pickens County has been referred to their health care provider after being attacked by a fox that later tested positive for rabies.
The victim was attacked by a fox in Pickens on July 23, according to a release from the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The fox was submitted to DHEC’s laboratory for testing that same day and confirmed to have rabies on July 24, the release said.

Softball camp set for next week in Pickens
PICKENS — The Pickens Recreation Department will be hosting its 2019 softball camp next week.
Registration for the camp is open through Saturday at the Pickens Rec Department.
The camp will host 11 and 12 year olds on Monday from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and campers ages 7-10 will participate from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday. Rain dates are Aug. 7-8.
The camp will be held at Hooper Field, located at 250 E. Jones Ave. in Pickens. Cost is $25 per participant.
Camp instruction will be by Southern Wesleyan University head softball coach Coy Atkins, Pickens High School junior varsity softball coach Tammy Anthony and current PHS varsity players.
The camp will focus on fundamentals, offense, defense and base-running.

Breazeale announces run for Easley City Council Ward 5 seat
EASLEY — Nancy Breazeale has announced her candidacy for the Ward 5 seat on Easley City Council.
Breazeale was born in Pickens County, the daughter of the late Walter Craig Jr. and the late Virginia Craig. She has been married to her husband, Paul Breazeale, for 19 years. The couple are currently raising their granddaughter, who lives in the home.

Tate announces bid for Easley City Council seat
EASLEY — Rick Tate has filed as a candidate for the the Easley City Council Ward 3 seat.
Ward 3 stretches south beyond West End Elementary, north to the Easley water tower, and east down U.S. 
Highway 123 to Pete’s Restaurant.
Tate, 63, is a graduate of Greenville Tech. He has spent his life working in logistics and transportation, from owning his own small trucking company to currently providing logistics support to BMW with Benore Logistic Systems Inc.
Tate said as he nears retirement, he wants to turn his focus to working for the people of Easley. Tate is a lifelong resident of the Easley-Powdersville area, with family roots in Easley going back to the mid-1800s.
