EASLEY — Easley High School officials swung for the fences in their search for a new head football coach, and they appear to have hit a

The school announced in a press release Tuesday morning that Caleb King will be the new coach of the Green Wave after engineering the highest scoring offense in the state of North Carolina at his alma mater, Havelock High School, a season ago. The 35-year-old led the Rams to a 13-1 record in 2018, averaging 59 points per game, before being upset in the Class 3A state semifinal.

King will replace John Windham, who resigned in November after the Green Wave finished the season with a 4-6 record and missed the Class 5A playoffs. Windham finished his four-year tenure as Easley’s coach with a 20-23 record.

2 face murder charges in Easley teen’s death

PICKENS — Two teens are facing murder charges after an Easley 16-year-old was shot to death and his body left on the side of a busy road in Easley earlier this month.

Eric Silverio Mondragon, 19, of Walhalla, and 18-year-old Jalen G’Vonte Hines of Greenville are both charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to news releases from Pickens County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Creed Hashe.

The body of Robert Tyler Butler of Dayton Drive, Easley was found on the afternoon of Jan. 19 beside Saluda Dam Road in Easley.

Deputies and South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers were initially unable to determine if Butler had been struck by a car, but an autopsy conducted last week revealed that he had been shot with a

Opioid addiction assistance program to launch in county

PICKENS — Pickens County will be the first county in South Carolina to launch a program aimed at providing opioid addicts with hope and pathways to treatment.

During a special called meeting Monday night, Pickens County Council passed a resolution endorsing the Community Outreach by Paramedic Education (COPE) program.

The program will see community paramedics and peer support specialists from Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County visit residents who have recently received Narcan, which reverses opioid overdoses.

Special election set for final seat on school board

PICKENS — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has scheduled a new election to decide who will represent District 7 on the Pickens County School Board.
