SDPC sets up school safety tip line

EASLEY — A school safety tip line created by the School District of Pickens 
County is now open for students, parents or staff who want to report any safety concerns.
Those using the site can submit a report at (864) 397-4444 and leave a message or email details of a particular concern to schoolsecurity@pickens.k12.sc.us. When submitting a report, a detailed message should be left that includes the name of the school or office to which the tip applies. Those calling the number are not required to provide a name or phone number to leave a message if they would like to remain anonymous.

TaylorMade plans $8M

PICKENS — TaylorMade Golf Company, one of the tenants of the Pickens County Commerce Park, is anticipating a $8 million expansion.
In April 2013, county officials announced that TaylorMade Golf Company would be building a facility in the commerce park, located in Liberty, and Alliance Pickens executive director Ray Farley said the company has built a “state-of-the-art facility” in Pickens County.

Man gets 25 years for roommate’s stabbing death
PICKENS — An Easley man pleaded guilty last week to stabbing his roommate to death over $190 in late rent payments.
Richard Andrew Hagins, 60, of Quiet Lane, pleaded guilty in Pickens County to voluntary manslaughter, according to a news release from 13th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins.
Judge Letitia Verdin sentenced Hagins to 25 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections prison system, Wilkins said.
Assistant solicitor Shannon Odom presented evidence at the plea hearing that established that Hagins and the victim, Jeff Chandler, 53, were arguing about late rent payments at their home on Quiet Lane on Aug. 26,

Teen sentenced in deadly crash

PICKENS — A Greenville teen has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and hit and run in connection with a collision in Pickens County that left a 75-
year-old man dead.
Marcio Adaly Antunez Aleman, 18, entered a guilty plea during a hearing Dec. 19, 13th Judicial Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins said in a news release.
Judge Letitia Verdin sentenced Aleman to six years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections prison system, Wilkins said.
The collision occurred on Aug. 5.
Assistant solicitor Baker Cleveland presented evidence that established that Aleman rear-ended a Dodge in Greenville County and drove away from the scene, Wilkins said.
The Dodge’s driver followed him.

Easley wreck claims woman

EASLEY — An Easley woman was killed and two other people were injured in a collision on S.C. Highway 183 Thursday morning.
Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said Carrie Jean Hall, 35, of Franklin Finley Road, died in surgery at Greenville Memorial Hospital after the wreck as a result of internal injuries.
Trooper Joe Hovis with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the collision occurred at 7:55 a.m. on Farrs Bridge Road (S.C. 183), two miles north of Easley.

County program gives new life to bikes, gifts for kids

PICKENS — A brainchild of Pickens County Councilman Wes Hendricks has led to a program that gives new life to old bicycles, teaches county inmates new skills and benefits local children in need.
Before he was elected to council, Hendricks had noticed that many serviceable bicycles were winding up in landfills.
“I thought ‘That’s a shame,’” he said. “These bikes were usable. After I was elected, the idea came to create this program.”
The bicycle refurbishing program began last year. Used bikes were recovered from the county’s recycling centers and then restored by inmates and county employees. The bicycles were then donated to County Santa, a volunteer organization based in Pickens that provides Christmas presents

County recognizes Daniel state championship teams

PICKENS — Pickens County Council members recognized the Daniel High School girls’ cross-country and girls’ golf teams for winning Class 4A state championships at a meeting earlier this month.
The recognition came during council’s Dec. 3 meeting.
Council chairman Roy Costner read a resolution recognizing each team at the meeting.
“This is really cool stuff,” Costner said.
