Enough to warm the cockles of your heart

The fire in the old fireplace in the front living room was burning steadily, putting out the only warmth in the living room.

I lay on the rug before the fire with my stocking. We’d finished opening gifts in front of the tree, Grandmama in her chair wearing her green quilted robe, Uncle Walter fully dressed in his starched white shirt and grey sweater and Mama in her bright red cardigan. Grandmama had left and gone to dress, to prepare for kitchen activities, Uncle Walter had thumped down the hall with his walking stick to help, and Mama was busy picking up wrapping paper and throwing it into the fire, bustling around, straightening up the room.

I lay there in my pajamas with my stocking, choosing a piece of candy from it that was slightly fuzzy from spending a sticky night in the felt toe. It didn’t bother either of us to suck on fuzzy candy. It was the ribbon striped hard candy that only appeared at Christmas and tasted like wintergreen.

We lay there, listening to a broadcast on the radio of Charles Dickens’ “A

Others are watching and listening

Even though it rarely crosses our mind, there is always someone listening to what we are saying. Words are not just meaningless sounds, but were created to communicate and most importantly to relay God’s thoughts. They contain the power to influence and persuade the listener, which means those who speak are being held accountable for their intentions.

Words that are presented from a negative attitude can cause much damage, while words spoken from a heavenly influence are filled with life and can bring hope, faith and encouragement. A wonderful reminder about how we are to guard our communication is recorded in Philippians 4:8, “Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true,

Making spirits bright.

The holiday season begins in late November and runs through New Year’s Day. It is marked by various gatherings of friends and family, decadent foods, cocktails, traveling, and gift exchanges. The National Retail Federation says consumers will spend an average of $967 during the holiday season. However, the joy of the holidays also is about all of the memorable experiences that tend to make the season so beloved.

With that in mind, here are 30 ways to make the holiday season that much more merry.

1. Visit with an elderly or housebound neighbor and share conversation.

2. Donate gently used toys to a children’s hospital.

3. Research the history of the holiday and share it with people you care about.

4. Make handmade Christmas tree ornaments.

5. Donate money to a charity or other good cause.

6. Encourage “pay it forward” movements in your community. Start by doing something simple like

Think outside the box for great last-minute gift ideas

Tradition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during the holiday season.

Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hour glass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season.

• Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books. For example, Amazon, which has thousands of e-books in its online library, makes it easy for shoppers to gift e-books to Kindle users, who will simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their

There’s nothing quite like a holiday get-together, but if you’re the host, you think twice before committing to the project.

If you have the house relatively clean and your guest list drawn up, the only matter of concern is the food. If gguests plan to bring a dish, that’s one thing. But if you plan to provide the entire spread, be careful not to overextend yourself. You don’t want to be exhausted for your party.

Easy and simple appetizers can be just as delicious as complicated recipes that are time-consuming to prepare.

Try some of these quick and easy recipes to make the party fun for everybody, including you.

By Jason Evans

LIBERTY — A Liberty woman is charged with murder after investigators say she shot and killed her husband as he slept Sunday morning.

Tracy Broom Posey walked into the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office at 7:20 a.m. Sunday morning and told authorities her husband, 30-year-old Justin Dale Posey, had been shot inside their home, chief deputy Creed Hashe said in a news release.

Posey said she believed her husband was dead, the release said.

Deputies arrived at the couple’s residence at 145 Posey Hill Road and found Justin Posey inside “with trauma to the head characteristic of what is typically seen with a gunshot wound,” Hashe said.

Pickens County deputy coroner Gary Duncan Duncan confirmed Justin
