CENTRAL — The 2018 Daniel Lions have exceeded almost all expectations put in front of them as they prepare to enter region play.

Coming off a disappointing 2-9 season, many expected the Lions to improve, but the turnaround to this point has been incredible.

Third-year head coach Jeff Fruster, the man behind the turnaround, has seemingly made the right decisions on many of the necessary changes following last year’s washout. After an abysmal season offensively, Fruster and athletic director Tommy Plumblee brought

Highly touted freshman Lawrence named Tigers’ starting QB

CLEMSON — It’s Trevor time in Death Valley.

Clemson announced Monday that freshman Trevor Lawrence has been named the Tigers’ starting quarterback for their game Saturday (noon, ABC) against Syracuse, replacing senior Kelly Bryant.

Lawrence has played in all four games for third-ranked Clemson (4-0, 1-0 ACC) so far, splitting time with Bryant, and the freshman from Cartersville, Ga., has looked the part of his No. 1 overall high school recruit ranking.

His latest performance was against Georgia Tech on Saturday, when he sprung the Tigers’ offense to life and completed 13 of 18 passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-21 win over the Yellow Jackets.

Now, he’s earned the starting job — for now.

“After four games, when you look at both of (the quarterbacks), they both have played well, done a lot for us, but it just came down to, you’ve got to reward productivity,” co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said Monday. “And if you look at his opportunities, he’s taken advantage of them. Kelly didn’t do anything wrong.

“It’s not a lifetime contract. He’s got to prove it in practice, he’s got to prove it in the next game, and when Kelly gets his opportunities, he’ll

Police seek robbery suspect

Griffin Grocery robbed at gunpoint Friday evening

PICKENS — Investigators are asking for the public’s help in identifying an armed robbery suspect.

An armed robbery occurred at around 6:15 p.m. Friday at Griffin Grocery, located at 1804 Pumpkintown Highway, Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe said in a news release Monday.

A white male in his late 20s or early 30s walked into the store and presented a handgun while demanding money from the clerk, Hashe said.

Hashe said the gun was a dark-colored semi-automatic.

Year-round school not an option for 2019-20 calendar

By Greg Oliver

EASLEY — It doesn’t appear the School District of Pickens County will be going to a modified year-round calendar anytime soon.

The district recently released two proposed calendars for the 2019-20 academic year, the year some district officials had pointed to as the earliest the modified calendar could begin. But neither the regular calendar nor balanced calendar is year round.

A survey sent to parents by the district sought their input on a “regular” calendar, created to comply with current South Carolina law requiring a start date no earlier than the third Monday in August. Under the regular calendar option, teachers would report Aug. 8, while the first day for students is Aug. 19. The calendar includes a three-day Thanksgiving break from Nov. 27-29, Christmas break

Woman bitten by rabid kitten

LIBERTY — A Liberty woman received treatment after possibly being exposed to rabies earlier this month.

The woman was bitten by a kitten that later tested positive for rabies, Pickens County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Creed Hashe said in a news release Friday.

A deputy with the sheriff’s office’s Animal Enforcement Unit responded to a home in the Black Bottom Road area on Sept. 7, Hashe said.

The homeowner had been bitten on the finger by a young kitten and told the deputy a skunk had previously come onto the property and killed

After busy summer at county animal shelter, residents urged to take action

By Jason Evans

Staff Reporter

jevans@thepccourier.com

PICKENS — Pickens County residents can help reduce intake numbers at the Pickens County Animal Shelter by spaying or neutering their pets, according to a statement released by the county.

County spokeswoman Jamie Burns said the shelter had an intake of more than 300 animals per month all summer long.

“In June, that number rose to almost 400,” Burns said. “This equates to more than 10 animals being surrendered to the shelter every single day. They are nearing capacity with those numbers.”

County officials are seeking to raise awareness about the importance of
