Benefit set to help Six Mile man with medical expenses
SIX MILE — Six Mile resident Howard Shanley felt like something was wrong when he told his wife, Debbie, that he thought he needed to go to the hospital, but he never dreamed it would have resulted in a heart operation that needed six bypasses to keep him alive.
Shanley is only 54 years old ,and he was the victim of a heart attack on July 12. First, doctors told him he needed a heart catheterization. Once inside, the procedure failed. Without any other option, doctors decided he needed open-heart surgery to save his life. The surgery included six bypasses.
According to the Mayo Clinic, coronary bypass surgery is a surgical procedure that diverts the flow of blood around a section of a blocked or partially blocked artery in a person’s heart. By creating a new pathway to the heart, coronary bypass surgery improves blood flow to the heart muscle.

West Nile Virus confirmed in person in Easley
City and county working together to spray Easley area with insecticide

EASLEY — A case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in a person in Easley.
In a special news conference at Easley City Hall on Friday, Pickens County and Easley officials confirmed that a single person in the Easley area had tested positive for the disease.

This is the first case ever reported in Pickens County, although some have occurred in the Upstate in Greenwood and Spartanburg counties.

Easley man drowns in Lake Keowee
SALEM — A 47-year-old Easley man died Monday night after he did not resurface while swimming on the north end of Lake Keowee near Fall Creek Landing.
Jody Levi Black was pronounced dead at 7:14 p.m. in the emergency department of Oconee Memorial Hospital, according to a statement released by Oconee County coroner Karl Addis. Addis ruled the death an accidental drowning.
Oconee County Emergency Services deputy chief Clint Livingston said a call came in at 5:43 p.m. about a possible drowning at a waterfall two coves away from Fall Creek Landing. Oconee County fire chief Charlie King said crews arrived at the “Party Cove” waterfall and began searching the area. The victim was recovered within 40 minutes,
