Pickens County Meals on Wheels names new director
COUNTY — Only a week after he announced director Meg Benko would resign later this month, Pickens County Meals on Wheels Board Chair Gerald Reese announced Wednesday that her predecessor has been named.
According to Reese, the board has appointed Meta Bowers as the executive director for the organization.
Bowers has been employed with PCMOW under current director Meg Benko for three years and currently holds the position of program manager.
“Because of the intimate knowledge Meta has with all aspects of the program, being named executive director will be a smooth transition for our organization,” Reese said.
Bowers’ time spent helping to build the Meal on Wheels program to its current level is an extension of her experience in the social services. Prior to being employed by PCMOW, Bowers was an intensive in-home counselor for Pickens County Behavioral Health Services. There, she provided case management and implemented in-home family therapy. Bowers was also a human service specialist for Pickens County Department of Social Services (DSS) for two years. While at DSS, Bowers assessed child or adult abuse/neglect, created treatment plans and acted on behalf of clients within the legal system.
Bowers’ former positions as a chapter executive for SC Chapter National Tooling & Machining Association and office manager for JM Mold South, Inc. complement her social service experience. In these capacities, Bowers was responsible for a wide range of administrative functions that made her a highly qualified candidate for executive director.
Bowers received a Bachelor’s of Science with a major in geology from Appalachian State University in 1996, and her Associates of Arts from Oxford College of Emory University in 1994. She is married to David Bowers II and they have three young children, Trey, Myra Kate and Leah.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead,” said Bowers. “I am honored to accept the position of executive director and look forward to fulfilling the mission of Meals on Wheels in a new capacity.”
Bowers will take over for Benko this Friday, March 18.
