Pickens Senior Center plans fiber room tours

PICKENS — The Hagood Community Center will soon be the place for those interested in the fiber arts.

The center is home to the Pickens Senior Center and will soon be hosting welcome tours for a room dedicated to fiber arts. The room will be available to individuals of all ages, small groups and fiber arts organizations for both casual get-togethers and instructional programs. The dedication is set for June 25 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and June 26 starting at 5 p.m.

The dedication will be a chance to tour the facility, view the newly acquired Granger collection of quilts, hooked rugs and antique sewing tools and to explore how the use of the room best meets the needs of the community.

An interest survey has begun to circulate among the community which asks that interested persons give their names, contact information, and activities they would like to know more about, and/or particular activities with which they could assist others. Surveys will also be available the days of the dedication.

“From the surveys already received, we know that we are in need of someone who can help us learn more about tatting,” Senior Center member Lucy Harward said. ” And the good news is, that in addition to the activities set (crochet, cross stitch, embroidery, felting, knitting, rug hooking, quilting, spinning, tatting, and weaving), we have already had someone offer to share her knowledge in using natural plants for dying fibers. And when someone else requested to learn about platting rugs, someone offered to help us learn. So our community is excited both about learning and helping others learn. Let us know what you want to learn and what you can help others learn.

“And we are a sharing community in other ways. Someone has already given a partially completed quilt top which someone else has completed. We hope to have it in a quilt frame before the welcome tours. It will become our first fundraiser.”

Surveys can be picked up at the Community Center Cafeteria Desk at 129 School House St. in Pickens. Those interested can also call Harward at (864) 419-1794 or fill out a survey at the welcome events.
