Thieves make off with $30,000 in grave markers

PICKENS — The Pickens County Sheriff’s office is looking for those involved in stealing more than $30,000 worth of grave markers from Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of a break-in Thursday at the park, located on S.C. 8 just outside of Pickens.
When investigators arrived, they found where they believe thieves cut the metal siding of a storage building to gain entry into a storage shed where the bronze markers were being stored.
According to the PCSO the markers were purchased by family and engraved, but had never been placed on graves in the park and were stored in the building.
The markers have been valued at $4,000 each. Investigators say the markers and a dolly were the only things that were reported missing.
