LIBERTY — With Memorial Day coming up next week, Walter Toole and his business, Liberty Family Pharmacy, are helping to keep alive the memory of a Pickens County soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.

James Donnie Howe was born in Pickens County in December 1948. He was killed on May 6, 1970, while serving as a lance corporal in the U.S. Marines in Vietnam.

President Richard Nixon posthumously presented Howe with the Medal of Honor. The citation recognizes his “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.”
