Sheriff asks SLED to investigate allegations against administrator

COUNTY — Pickens County sheriff Rick Clark has asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to conduct an investigation into a Pickens County councilman’s allegation that a former county administrator illegally used county resources.

4-8 Page 1A.inddPICKENS — A Greenville man pleaded guilty recently to multiple charges in relation to a shooting last year in Pickens.

According to a news release from 13th Circuit solicitor Walt Wilkins, 36-year-old Christopher Radrico Mayes pleaded guilty on March 26 to attempted murder and first-degree assault and battery.

Wilkins said Mayes was sentence to 10 years in prison by judge Letitia Verdin.

Cannon Hospital passes audit, renews ISO certification

PICKENS — Cannon Memorial Hospital recently received a new ISO 9001:2008 recertification after successfully passing an audit of its quality management system by DNV Healthcare Inc.

In 2012, Cannon was the first and only hospital system in South Carolina to receive the certification. The ISO certification is good for three years. Currently, only six other hospital systems in South Carolina are DNV accredited.

County council OKs access road to fire station

COUNTY — On a night when every vote by county council was unanimous, Pickens County councilman Tom Ponder had an objection to the proposed access road to the Shady Grove fire station.

The proposal called for a one-lane road to the station. Crews would have access to communication equipment to be sure that traffic problems would not hinder the arrival of aid.

But Ponder wondered if that would create a public safety issue.

Sixth annual Wings and Wheels for Meals set for next weekend

PICKENS — On Saturday, April 18, the Keowee Flyers, the Pickens County Pilot’s Association and Pickens County Meals on Wheels will host the sixth annual Wings and Wheels for Meals event at the Pickens County Airport.

Admission for the event, which will run from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., will be $10 per vehicle at the entrance to the airport. All proceeds from the event will go to fund the critical services provided

PICKENS — Cannon Memorial Hospital will take part in the National Pill Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The general public is asked to take advantage of this day to get rid of potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescriptions drugs. The service is free and anonymous. ceremony held at historic Pickens Chapel Cemetery and hosted by the Pickens County Historical Society as part of the Reunion of Upcountry Families.

There are 27 known soldiers who participated in the American Revolution buried in the cemetery. In addition, there are many veterans from the War of 1812, the Florida War, the Civil War and later wars.

Pickens Chapel was marked in 1980 by the Colonel John Robins Chapter of Pickens.

The event was the first meeting of Skyagunsta Society that president Anna Haskins presided over for her 2015-2016 term.
