A Landmark Lost
‘Suspicious’ fire destroys historic tavern
PICKENS — A “suspicious” weekend fire destroyed a Pickens County landmark billed as the oldest continually operating beer joint in the state, police said.
According to Pickens County Sheriff’s Office chief deputy Creed Hashe, a passing motorist alerted authorities about flames spotted near the front porch area of Bob’s Place shortly before midnight Saturday.
Hashe said the tavern, which he said was “in a remote area of the county” near the North Carolina line on U.S. Highway 178 north of Pickens, was declared a total loss.
“The sheriff’s office is working closely with fire officials and has determined that the fire is suspicious,” Hashe said.

Graduations set Saturday
COUNTY — Pickens County high school seniors will walk across a stage and into their futures on Saturday morning.
Hundreds of students will receive their diplomas as Daniel, Easley, Liberty and Pickens high schools hold graduation ceremonies at their football stadiums on Saturday morning.
Graduations are planned at 8:30 a.m. at each of the four schools. Although rain was not in the forecast at press time Tuesday, the schools each have plans to move graduation into the gymnasium in case of inclement weather.

Belt-tightening to put Liberty back in black

Names to be added to Clemson Scroll of Honor in Memorial Day ceremony

CLEMSON — Two names will be added to Clemson University’s Scroll of Honor — the monument that recognizes Clemson alumni who died on active military service — in a Memorial Day ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Charles Carroll Biggerstaff, class of 1920, and Theodore Williams Gaines, class of 1909, were identified as qualifying for the Scroll of Honor through research by U.S. Air Force Maj. Brock Lusk of Clemson’s aerospace studies departemnt.

Womanless beauty pageant scheduled June 10 in Pickens
PICKENS — A womanless beauty pageant is planned at the Pickens Senior Community Center on Saturday, June 10, at 7 p.m.
