‘Sunlight’ on the subject

A stretch of balmy January days gave Southern Wesleyan University students an early bout of “spring fever” as temperatures rose into the 70s.

This prompted Dr. Patty Hovis to take her Research Methods and Statistics class outside. She’s seen talking over some concepts with Jhante McMillan as Sabrina Rebuck and Jolene Freerksen look on. McMillan is a senior from Rock Hill; Rebuck is a senior from Hamilton, N.Y.; and Freerksen is a senior from Carstairs, Alberta, Canada. All are Exercise Science majors.

 

SWU’s Jacob Wiles earns UPS Scholarship

CENTRAL — Southern Wesleyan University student Jacob Wiles, a sophomore majoring in Secondary Social Studies from Easley, has been selected to receive a UPS Scholarship provided by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc. (SCICU) and its national partner, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC).

At the national level, CIC teams up with the UPS Foundation to distribute funding of the UPS Scholarship. Through this program this year, SCICU awarded $52,000 in UPS Scholarships to 20 students at private institutions across SC.

 

Staff members honored as TCT’s Educators of the Year

UPSTATE — Three faculty/staff members have been honored as Tri-County Technical College’s Educators of the Year and will be recognized at the South Carolina Technical Education Association (SCTEA) meeting in February.

Atax committee announces project funding availability

 COUNTY — Pickens County is now accepting accommodations tax funding applications for projects for the 2016-2017 fiscal year from organizations involved in tourism-related activities or projects.

The funds, collected from Pickens County accommodations tax, are intended to be used to further the growth of the tourism industry in Pickens County by attracting or providing for tourists. The distribution of the funds is approved by Pickens County Council, which receives recommendations from the Pickens County Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee. The committee will determine its recommendations on completed funding request applications received and will be meeting during the month of March to review the applications.
