How do you like your beans?

The world is flat, we never landed on the moon and there is no such thing as climate change. And if you believe that, I suggest you go outside and look around.

Next year we’re going to have to switch to a different variety of bush bean than we’ve planted in the past. We’ve done the research and are going to try Rattlesnake Beans or Greasy Backs. Those are two varieties that can endure extremely hot, dry weather.

This year our pole beans grew tall, the leaves were green, and they bloomed. When they produced, we picked, strung and snapped them and put up a run of 14 jars. This is a lot of work, as you know. We didn’t can everything that was picked, but saved enough to

Panem et Circenses

Dear Editor,

The Latin ‘Panem Et Circenses’ is literally defined as Bread and Circuses; entertainment provided by government to appease public discontent.

That’s what three minutes will get you, when addressing county council.

Since council appears to have no interest in officially responding to my proposal at the Aug. 12 meeting of council, regarding a resolution titled, ‘Declaring Pickens County a Gun Sanctuary County,’ it is my duty as a concerned citizen to inform the people of Pickens County that our government places tourism, taxation and fee-in-lieu-of-tax incentives above our country’s Bill of Rights, specifically the Second Amendment, which is a reminder to government, regarding

Blue Flame control all facets in blowout at Berea

By John Robert Ayers

BEREA — In arguably Pickens football’s most dominant performance of the Chad Smith era, the Blue Flame routed the Berea Bulldogs 51-7 at Harold Batson Stadium on Friday night.

“If we execute like that, we’re pretty good,” Smith said after the game. “If you look at (Berea’s) scores, Liberty beat them by 10, Pendleton beat them by 13, and we took it to them. So we just have to take care of us.”

Berea’s only points came on a kickoff return four minutes into the first quarter.

The Blue Flame dominated every facet of the game, however the game wasn’t without its teaching moments.

When asked about the near-shutout performance, Smith joked, “We need to work on kickoff.”

The Pickens defense allowed just 62 total yards, forced two turnovers and held the Bulldog offense without a first down until the tail end of the fourth quarter.

“They were fantastic. Defense did a great job,” Smith added. “It was a good team win.”

Pickens began the game on offense in a formation that the Blue Flame faithful are not accustomed to seeing. The four receiver and one tight end set with quarterback Drew

Westside shuts out Wave in big region-opening win

By Eugene Jolley

news@thepccourier.com

EASLEY — Easley High School football coach Caleb King talked during summer workouts about Westside possibly being the region favorite.

Friday night at Bill Carr Stadium, the Rams did nothing to reject King’s feelings, as Westside rolled to a 57-0 win over the Green Wave in the teams’ Region I-5A opener.

Easley just couldn’t stop the Rams, led by senior quarterback Blair Garner, a Palmetto transfer. It was Garner’s rushing that kept the Green Wave defense on its heels all night.

“I think they are extremely talented and a well-coached team,” King said. “They did a great job tonight. We’ve got to keep getting out of our own way. You see improvements in every facet of the game here and there. But the biggest thing is that we’ve got to stop beating ourselves on little things. We get some stops and then we turn it over. You can’t do that. We definitely cut them down from last week as far as turnovers go. But we still didn’t turn them down enough. Again, that is something that we’re going to have to overcome.”

Garner rushed for 140 yards on 13 carries as Westside amassed 533 yards of total offense. Backs Tyeim Williams-Dean (17-125) and Hunter Puckett (11-118) also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark.

Westside hadn’t played in two weeks, as the previous week’s home game with Daniel was cancelled due to storms. The Rams had lost to Greer (36-28) and to Boiling Springs (24-10) in their first two games. Westside definitely did not look like a winless team.

The Rams opened the game by taking advantage of a short field, driving 37 yards to the 1-yard line. Then came a play that has typified Easley’s three-game skid. Garner fumbled and the Wave had two shots at making the recovery, but somehow the Rams recovered at the 8-. They scored two plays later.

Easley got another first down on the next series when Kasten Harvey’s pass to Adam Brumfield was caught despite a big hit at the 36. The drive stalled, and Malachi Calhoun hit a spiraling 63-yard punt into the end

Behind Hamilton’s career night, Lions handle Blazers

By Bru Nimmons
Staff Reporter

CENTRAL — The Daniel Lions entered Friday night facing arguably their toughest challenge of the season on Hall of Fame Night against the Ridge View Blazers.

But after a back-and-forth affair early, the Lions pulled away in the second half to finish their non-conference slate 4-0.

The Blazers entered the game boasting a stout defense, but that didn’t stop the Lions’ passing attack. Daniel quarterback Tyler Venables finished the night throwing for 362 yards. However, those gaudy numbers were outshone by a strong performance from speedy senior receiver Hack Hamilton. Hamilton had seven catches for 206 yards and scored four touchdowns, as he constantly beat the Blazers’ coverage.

“Hack is doing what we knew he could do all along,” Daniel coach Jeff Fruster said. “He’s a gifted speedster and he uses it to his advantage.”

“This all comes from heart and determination,” Hamilton added. “My team boosts me up every day, and we really push each other.”

The Lion defense had another strong outing, holding the Blazers to three scores, as senior defensive end Jared Kirksey continued his dominant season. Kirksey added a 77-yard pick-
