New Year’s dishes bring good fortune

By Olivia Fowler

All over the world, people believe that serving certain dishes on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day will bring a prosperous New Year.

Greens of almost any kind are chosen to represent folding money, pork is considered a prosperous meat and peas and beans represent coins in many cultures.

In the South, especially the Carolinas, collard greens, black-eyed peas and rice are universally thought to be most important for New Year’s dishes.

This tradition can be traced to several other regions, primarily Africa, France and the Caribbean.

The pork roast and saurkraut tradition is favored in states with strong German and Dutch heritages, and the orange brandy cake is a Greek Island tradition.

They’re all good. And I hope prosperity will come to you immediately after eating at least one of these dishes.

Clemson materials research in quantum computing may lead to computational speeds never seen before

CLEMSON — An emerging technology called quantum computing may soon be capable of solving incredibly complex problems that are beyond the capacity of today’s most powerful supercomputers. When this eventually happens, quantum computing will revolutionize a range of fields, including encryption and cybersecurity, drug discovery and weather forecasting.

Unlike conventional computers that store information in binary form (either 1 or 0), quantum computers exploit the strange properties of quantum physics to store information in multiple forms known as qubits.

By Bru Nimmons

EASLEY — There was plenty of hope for the Easley Green Wave football team entering coach Caleb King’s first season at the helm of the program.

The 35-year-old King was coming off a 13-1 record at his alma mater, Havelock High School, where he developed one of the best offenses in North Carolina.

But following an up-and-down 3-7 season, that hope has vanished following his abrupt resignation, as he stepped down from the position earlier this month, according to school district spokesman John Eby.

“We appreciate his leadership of the team this season, and the
