Shining with the spirit of Christmas

I’ve written a lot of Christmas stories over the years. Most of the time, I’ve gone out in search of the spirit of Christmas in the most unlikely of places. Christmas among families separated by war. Christmas in the Greyhound station. Christmas among the homeless.

Even in the bleakest of circumstances, you can almost always find a saint, shining the light of Christmas in the darkness.

A few years ago, I was out on such a mission, driving through the poorest

The Christmas story

“And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.  This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered,  everyone to his own city.

“Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And behold, an angel of the

Path to better SC schools only starts with teacher pay raise

It’s one of those “duh” comments that seems painfully obvious once it’s said, but that holds a truth that we too often forget until it is said.

Great teachers, Gov. Henry McMaster said Tuesday in announcing his plan to raise S.C. teacher pay by $3,000 next year, “don’t want to do it for the money.” But, he continued, “they can’t do it without the money.”

It’s essentially the same idea that too many people forget

Wired or wireless?

Much of the time we want to embrace technology and whatever is the latest and greatest. When it comes to our electronic gadgets, sometimes the newest isn’t necessarily the best.

I suspected I was in trouble when my cable provider insisted on installing a new, fancy modem. Within hours, my computer, hooked up via Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity), was dragging and cutting out. After multiple phone calls over
