Man facing explosives charge

EASLEY — An Easley man has been charged with possession of an explosive device in connection with a federal investigation.

David Scott Halsey, 58, is charged with possessing, manufacturing or transporting a destructive device or explosive for damage, injury or death, according to a release from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

SLED agents arrested Halsey on Sunday.

Upstate hospital systems talk vaccine schedule procedures

County adds nine more virus deaths

COLUMBIA — After weeks of double-digit death numbers, Pickens County added nine confirmed COVID-19 deaths over the past week.

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, eight of the nine people who died in the six-day period from last Wednesday to Monday were elderly, while one was middle-aged.

SDPC bus driver killed in collision

PICKENS — A longtime School District of Pickens County bus driver was killed in a car wreck last week.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley identified the victim as Treasa Carol Norton, 56, of Pace Bridge Road in Marietta.

Easley house fire claims man, 98

EASLEY — An elderly Easley man died in a house fire Saturday.

Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley identified the victim as Charles Hamilton, 89, of 302 N. 1st St.

Hamilton was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

EASLEY — Easley officials warn they may have to make the city’s face coverings ordinance stricter if COVID numbers keep rising.

Liberty teams win big on senior night

LIBERTY — The Liberty High School basketball teams held their senior night on Friday night, and all four seniors went home happy after dominant wins over the Greenville Tech Charter High School Warriors.

The girls kicked off the action on the night and put up arguably their best performance of the season in a 55-21 win.

“That’s probably one of the best games we’ve played,” Liberty girls’ head coach Greg Thomas said. “We played as a team and as a group. We have some things we have to clean up, but overall I think they played really well.”

Pickens girls split region games

PICKENS — The Pickens Lady Blue Flame basketball team played two region opponents last week, defeating Walhalla for the first time in recent memory and losing to Westside.

The Pickens girls defeated Walhalla 43-35 on Jan. 12 and lost 62-33 to Westside on Jan. 13. Both contests were played in the friendly confines of Coach Peggy Harden Anthony Gymnasium.
