Former Korean POW, purple heart recipient Funchess dies at 93

CLEMSON — A Pickens County man who spent nearly three years in captivity as a prisoner of war in North Korea died
last week.
William H. Funchess Jr. died Thursday at his home in Clemson. He was 93.
Funchess served as a 1st Lieutenant with the 24th Infantry Division. His story was shared during a 2018 POW/MIA recognition ceremony sponsored by Clemson University’s Air Force ROTC.

EHS student dies in wreck

EASLEY — A 16-year-old Easley High School student died in a car accident last week.
Pickens County deputy coroner Gary Duncan identified the victim as Jordan Deonte Jenkins, 16, of Springfield Circle.
Jenkins was a rising junior and multi-sport athlete at Easley High School, where his father, Mike Jenkins, serves as an assistant football coach.

Accident claims Easley couple
EASLEY — An Easley couple died after a single-vehicle accident Thursday evening.
Pickens County deputy coroner Gary Duncan identified the victims as husband and wife Jamie Lee Wayne Burton, 42, and Tiffany Michelle Burton, 40, of Saluda Dam Road in Easley.

Breaking ground
A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the newly protected Grant Meadow overlook on S.C. 
Highway 11, which offers perhaps the most iconic view of Table Rock. County officials and others instrumental to the protection of the scenic view, including property owner Hoyt Grant and Upstate Forever officials, gathered at 9 a.m. Friday to break ground on the vista.

DHEC marks COVID-19 Vaccine Action Week
COLUMBIA — Sunday kicked off COVID-19 Vaccine Action Week in South Carolina, as state officials continue to urge residents to get vaccinated.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is reporting the state “has seen a decline in vaccine demand since mid-April.” In a release from the agency, DHEC said more than 45 percent of vaccine-eligible South Carolinians have received at least one shot, and more than 38 percent are fully vaccinated. That figure falls well short of the goal to hit vaccination rates of 70 percent or higher.

Dacusville Community Center hosts first national art exhibit

DACUSVILLE — There were nearly 300 pieces of art by 96 artists from 36 states and three Canadian provinces on display at the Dacusville Community Center last Friday, Saturday and Sunday, at the first-ever Mountain View Americana Art 
Show and Competition.
A total of $7,000 in prize money was awarded, and an online auction was held Saturday night.
The exhibit included a vast array of subject matter and media, all focused on the animals, people and landscapes of the American West,

Fire damages Easley business

EASLEY — A fire early Monday morning damaged an Easley business, but caused no injuries.
According to a release from the Easley Fire Department, firefighters were alerted to a commercial structure fire at 6:13 a.m. at Palmetto Plating, located at 510 Saco Lowell Road.

Liberty girl headed to national rodeo finals
Joleigh Galloway of Liberty has been competing in rodeos since she was 3 years old and will now have a chance to compete against the country’s best at the National Junior High School Finals Rodeo. Galloway qualified for the finals in the events of pole bending, goat tying and ribbon roping. The event is set to
take place in Des Moines, Iowa, and will be held from June 20-26. “I am super nervous about nationals, but I’m going to try my hardest and give 110 percent,” Galloway said.
