JULIE GARRETT

DACUSVILLE — Julie Garrett, 63, loving wife of 44 years to Gene Garrett, passed away from this life on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, at St. Francis Downtown.

A native of Charleston, W.Va., Julie was born on July 27, 1958, to the late Rev. John Smith Jr. and Joyce Finger Smith. She was a graduate of Clinton High School in Clinton, Miss., and later graduated from Greenville Technical College. She loved reading, taking care of her grandchildren and bird watching and was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship. Mrs. Garrett fell in love with the faculty, staff and students of Pickens High School, where she worked as a receptionist for the past 17  years.

In addition to her husband Gene of the home, Mrs. Garrett is survived by her children, Matthew Garrett (Ashley) of Dacusville and Hannah Garrett of Sumter; four grandchildren, Kinsley Garrett, Kaleigh Garrett, Ally Childress and Bella Evans (Austin); her siblings, Jill Snyder (Mike), Skippy Smith (Beth) and Chris Lloyd (William); two nieces, Calla Smith and Joy Ragland; and a nephew, Enoch Snyder.

Mrs. Garrett was predeceased by her parents and two of her daughters, Martha Garrett and Lisa Garrett.

Flowers will be accepted.

Receiving of friends and family took place on Feb. 1 at the Mill Church in Pickens, with a celebration of life service following.

CLEALON H. BARRETT

PICKENS — Clealon H. Barrett, 77, loving wife of the late Earl Barrett, passed away from this life on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, at her residence.

Mrs. Barrett was born on Jan. 9, 1945, to the late Vesse and Ollie Hoxit. Clealon enjoyed gospel music, reading her bible, being outdoors and telling people about the Lord. She was a member of Bethel Independent Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Lisa Whitmire (Roger) of Pickens and Timmy Barrett of Columbia; grandchildren, Candice Anthony (Nate), Brandon Whitmire (Brooke), Cody Whitmire, Travis Barrett (Brooke), Bailey Barrett, Taylor Green (Josh), Zachery Barrett and Britany Barrett; her siblings, Palmer Hoxit, Virginia Bates and Faye Cassell; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Joseph Murphee.

In addition to her husband, Earl, Mrs. Barrett was predeceased by her parents; a son, Tony Barrett; and her siblings, Wayne, Newell, Pearline and Hazel.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 31 at Bethel Independent Baptist Church.

BETTY WALDROP OWENS

EASLEY — Mrs. Betty Waldrop Owens, 87, wife of the late Melvin “Pug” Owens, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022.

Born in Easley, a daughter of the late Olen Benson Waldrop and the late Addis Bridges Waldrop, Mrs. Owens attended Easley High School and retired from Woodside Mills with 34 years of service. She was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Lucille Searcy Sunday School Class.

Surviving are her two daughters, Deborah Owens Bagwell (Randy) and Jan Owens Barnes (Mike), both of Easley; her sister, Nancy W. McLeod of Simpsonville; her three grandchildren, David Bagwell (Leslie), Elizabeth Stephens (Jeff) and Everett Barnes; and her four great-grandchildren, Brantley and Lane Stephens and Aubrey and Luke Bagwell.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Owens was predeceased by her brother, Harold Waldrop.

Betty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who cherished her family. She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, prior to the graveside service.

JUDY BROWN HAYES

LIBERTY — Mrs. Judy Brown Hayes, 62, wife of Randall James Hayes, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022.

Born in Greenville County, a daughter of the late Beauford Brown and the late Alice Turner Brown, Mrs. Hayes was employed with Reliable Sprinkler Company and was of the Holiness faith.

Judy loved music and was a talented musician. She loved all people, but her greatest love was being a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. Judy will be missed dearly by all.

Surviving, in addition to her husband of 47 years, are her three sons, Michael Hayes (Amanda Timmons) of Easley, Steven Hayes of the home and David Hayes of Easley; her daughter, Sherry Hayes (Jason Burgess) of Norris; her brother, Beauford Brown Jr. of Pickens; her sister, Christina Medlin of Laurens; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

BOBBY JOE ‘TEX’ ELLENBURG

 

LIBERTY — Bobby Joe Ellenburg, 84, died on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, at Anderson Area Medical Center.

Born in Asheville, N.C., he was a son of the late Mildred Ellenburg, as well as parents who raised him, Joe and Launa “Mama Noon” Ellenburg. He served in the U.S. Army and was retired from Shaw Corp. He was an avid Clemson fan and also loved playing golf and watching any kind of racing. Tex was a member of Liberty Masonic Lodge No. 235 A.F.M. and the Hejaz Shrine and attended Carmel Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his two daughters, Pam Brown (Jim) of Iva and Traci Bagwell (Stanley) of Dacusville; a son, Joey Ellenburg of Pickens; a stepdaughter, Joy Merck (Chris); a sister, Jan Jones of Georgetown; four grandchildren, Jeremy Ellenburg (Anita), Hunter Patterson (Ashley), Joseph Albertson (Hayley) and Aaron Patterson; two stepgrandchildren, Jay and McKenzie Merck; and a great-grandchild, Paizley-Rae Patterson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Mauldin Ellenburg; his second wife, Lillie Belle Dalton Ellenburg; a brother, Al “Buck” Jones; and a step-son, Robert Bridges.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Ellenburg will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6, in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb. 5 from 4-6 p.m. at the mortuary.

ANGELINE LIDIE  LIMBAUGH HENDERSON

EASLEY — Angeline Lidie Limbaugh Henderson, 90, wife of the late Bruce Edward Henderson, of Easley, passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Ammon Matthew Sr. and Montez Earline Cooper Limbaugh.

Angeline loved gardening, crocheting, cooking and bird watching, but loved her grandchildren over all. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Steve Henderson (Jannette) and Allen Henderson (Julie), both of Easley; six grandchildren, Faith Wilson, Rachel Tate (Daniel), Zachary Henderson (Jill), Jenna Henderson, Lucas Henderson and Stephen Bruce Henderson Jr. (Elise); five stepgrandchildren, April Nurmi (Jason), Chad Young, Adrian Hilton, Anthony Hilton and Amber Hilton; eight great-grandchildren, Brailynne Henderson, Abbygayle Wilson, June Wilson, Ava Tate, Evan, Everleigh, Emma and Eleanor Henderson; and four step-great-grandchildren, Jake, Kiley and Samantha Nurmi and Eva Marie Hilton.

In addition to her loving husband, Angeline was predeceased by brothers, Ammon Matthew Limbaugh Jr., Harry A. Limbaugh and Woodrow S. Limbaugh; sisters, Mary L. Gillespie, Jackie L. Shelton, Peggy L. Gillespie, and Sadie L. Palmer; and one great-grandson, Cameron Wilson.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, at Corinth Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1-1:45 p.m. on Thursday at the church.

ROBERT ALDEN SCHULTZ

LIBERTY — Robert Alden Schultz, husband of Melissa (Missi) Marie Schultz, passed away on Jan. 26, 2022, at the age of 54.

Born in Dover, Del., a son of the late Ernest and Dorothy Schultz, Robert was a loving husband to his wife of 13 years. In addition to her, he is survived by his son, Robert Schultz Jr. of Chapin; a grandson, Alden River Schultz; sisters, Paula Pennell of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kathy Schultz of Atlanta, Ga.; and a brother, Richard Schultz of Albuquerque, N.M.

Robert enjoyed cooking, sports and spending time with family. He had a giving heart and would always extend a helping hand to anyone in need. Robert was a proud UPS driver of 30 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations go to the Pickens County Humane Society, as Robert had a deep love for animals.

The family will have a private memorial to honor him.

CYNTHIA WEST

EASLEY — Cynthia Newsome West, 73, of Rotterdam Road, died on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, at Prisma Health-Baptist Easley.

Born in Greenville, she was the wife of 54 years to John G. West and a daughter of the late Forrest Byrd Newsome Jr. and Jeanette Seigel Newsome. She was a retired school bus driver from the School District of Pickens County and a member of Smith Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Janie West and Katherine McRae (Charles), both of Easley; a sister, Mary McCollough (Garry) of Easley; three grandchildren, Dylan Garner, Judson Olivares and Elena Olivares; and one great-grandchild, Eleyana Olivares.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Ted Newsome.

The family will host a memorial service at a later date.

WILLIAM WOOD

Greenville — Mr. William Ralph Wood Jr., 61, passed away on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022.

Mr. Wood was a Mason who enjoyed collecting antiques and loved all things history. He was kind and loving to all those around him and could make anyone laugh. Ralph loved his family tremendously and was of the Christian faith.

He is survived by two daughters, Katie Wood Marquis (John) of Oxford, Miss., and Megan Wood Williamson of Atlanta, Ga.; his mother, Doris Turner Wood of Easley; one sister, Susan Elizabeth Whittington of Easley; two nephews, William Whittington of Pickens and Zachary Whittington of Greenville; and his partner of 14 years, Joy Ann Martin.

Preceding him in death was his father, William Ralph Wood Sr.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 5, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11-11:45 a.m. at Dillard Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Sandra ‘Gail’ Patterson

GRIFFIN, Ga. — Sandra “Gail” Patterson, 72, of Griffin, Ga., passed away on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022.

Gail was born on Sept. 11, 1949, in Pickens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline and Harry Rowland; sisters, Frances Trotter and Elsie Rowland; and brothers, Hovey Rowland, Ralph Rowland, Harold Rowland and Harry Rowland, Jr.

Gail was a retired administrative assistant for the superintendent of the Griffin-Spalding County School System and then worked with Shepard Law in Griffin, and most recently, with the law office of Smith, Welch, Webb and White.  She was a member of Union Baptist Church, enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and church family, and loved to bowl.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Patterson; children, Barry Patterson and wife, Charlotte, and Andy Patterson; grandchildren, Katie Hooks and husband, Nathan, Lorrie Beth Patterson, Mary Ashley Patterson, Cole Patterson and wife, Lisa, Levi Patterson, Drew Patterson, Brandi Sanders and Tara Lynn Johnson and husband, Denny; great-grandchildren, Stevie Ann Hooks, Jesse Johnson, Heaven Sanders and Saralyn Johnson; sisters, Betty Floyd of Pickens, Irene Westall and  Nancy Hughes; and a brother, Melvin Rowland.

The family would like to thank the staff at Family Medical Center and Eternal Hope Hospice of Griffin for the wonderful care they provided to Gail.

A celebration of life for Gail will be on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, 1405 North McDonough Road, Griffin, GA 30223. The service will be streamed live on the Union Baptist Church Facebook page.

NORRIS — Freida Fay Speights Galloway, 86, of Joyce Street, died on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022, at the Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca.

Born in Vicksburg, Miss., she was the widow of Paul Olonzo Galloway and a daughter of the late Vernon Shelby Speights and Louise Miller Monger. She worked for many years at Heilig-Meyers. She had many interests, including gardening, sewing, cooking and arts and crafts. She was a member of Seneca Church of Christ.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen Pratt-Walters (Jeff) of Norris and Cyndi Young (Douglas) of Seneca; a son, Keith Galloway of Norris; a sister, Maurine “Elsie” Holmes of Burnesville, N.C.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, David Paul Galloway; and two brothers, Donald and Charles Speights.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Galloway were held in the Liberty Mortuary chapel on Saturday, Jan. 29.The family received friends prior to the service at the mortuary. Private burial was held at Liberty Memorial Gardens.

JOYCE KING THORNE

TRAVELERS REST — Joyce King Thorne, 77, daughter of the late Dewey and Elsie Barton King, passed away from this life on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022, at her residence.

A native of Marietta, Joyce was born on July 21, 1944. She enjoyed reading, playing piano and doing puzzles. Joyce was a graduate of Slater-Marietta High School and a lifelong member of Marietta First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Darryl Thorne of Travelers Rest; three grandchildren, Anna Thorne, Mandy Thorne and Sabrina Thorne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ms. Thorne was predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Larry King and Don King.

Graveside services were held on Feb. 1 at Mountain View Memorial Park in Travelers Rest.

ROGER DUNCAN

SUNSET — Mr. Roger Duncan, 69, husband of Pam Duncan, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022.

Roger retired from Baptist Easley after 25 years and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Elise Duncan.

Left to treasure his fond memories are his loving wife of 32 years, Pam Duncan; two children, Bill Duncan (Jennifer) of Leicester, N.C., and Lee Ann Duncan of Kannapolis, N.C.; three stepchildren, Chasity Carr (Jonathan), Garland Williamson (Megan) and Kiely Nix; five grandchildren, Cheyenne Carr, Shy-lo Carr, Lucy Nix, Ansley Williamson and Reese Williamson; three sisters; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

PICKENS — Stacy Dean Huff, 55, loving husband of 31 years to Charlene Huff and loving father of Camille Huff, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022, at his residence.

Stacy was born in Mecklenburg, N.C., on Jan. 11, 1967, to the late Floyd C. Huff Sr. and the late Betty J. Huff and grew up in Dacusville. He enjoyed playing music and singing.

In addition to his wife, Charlene, of the home, Stacy is survived by his daughter, Camille Huff of Pickens; his siblings, Butch Huff (Danette) of Dacusville and Debbie Sipes (Jimmy) of Dacusville; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles L. and Carolyn R. Todd.

Mr. Huff was predeceased by his parents.

IDA M. ‘TAFFY’ EBEL

PICKENS — Ida M. “Taffy” Ebel, 95, loving wife of the late George Martin Ebel, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022, at Prisma Health Baptist Easley Hospital.

A native of New Haven, Conn., Taffy was born Sept. 26, 1926, daughter of the late Ralph George Stanford and Mildred Kelly Stanford. Mrs. Ebel was of the Baptist faith and a member of East Pickens Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Laurie Ann Sowell (Charles) of Pickens; a grandson, Tyler Henry Sowell; a sister, Lillian Lappie; and a brother, Leroy Stanford.

Mrs. Ebel was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

MARSHALL ROBERT CRISPELL

PICKENS — Marshall Robert Crispell, 38, son of Charles Robert Crispell and the late Diane Germaine Milanak Crispell, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022.

Mr. Crispell was born in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Jan. 10, 1984. Marshall was a graduate of Wellington High School and a member of the National Honors Society. He also attended Florida State University and the University of Northern Colorado. Marshall was a recipient of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship and was employed by Real Page Inc. He enjoyed collecting coins and was an avid music listener of Tool, A Perfect Circle, Incubus and Evanescence.

In addition to his father, Charles Crispell of Pickens, Mr. Crispell is survived by his three brothers, Michael, Matthew and Madison; his sisters-in-law, Sowmva and Sharlynne; his nephews, Logan and Reece; and his cousins, Jack, Spencer, Lauren and Jesse.

Mr. Crispell was predeceased by his mother, Diane Crispell, and his grandparents, Andrew and Emily Milanak and George and Edith Crispell.

MAYBETH TINSLEY HARRIS

EASLEY — Maybeth Tinsley Harris, 98, wife of the late Heyward Clayton Harris, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022.

Born in Easley, she was a daughter of the late Lillie Merrill and Louie S. Tinsley Sr.

She graduated from Easley High School in the Class of 1940 and was the co-owner of Pickensville Super Market from 1958-83. She was a member of Easley First Wesleyan Church, which is now United Wesleyan Church, where she served as church clerk for 25 years and Sunday school secretary for 32 years.

After retirement, Mrs. Harris enjoyed traveling across the country with her husband and being involved with the Easley Senior Center, where she taught quilting. She dearly loved her family and playing Bingo with her friends at the Retreat. She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Mrs. Harris is survived by two daughters, Leritha Harris of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Karen Jane Abercrombie (Chip) of Warsaw, Va.; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Harris was predeceased by a son, Gerald D. Harris; a daughter, Wanda Alexander; two brothers, Louie S. Tinsley Jr. and Charles Wesley Tinsley; a sister, Edith Tinsley Bates; and one grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 30 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum.

EDNA DILLARD

SIX MILE — Mrs. Edna Dillard, 84, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022.

Edna was the wife of the late Edward L. Dillard. She enjoyed the simple life, loved to cook and loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dillard had a passion for teaching, and taught for many years at Pickens Presbyterian. She was very proud of her husband’s heritage, as he was the grandson of James Thomas Dillard, the original owner of the 88 acres on both sides of the Pickens/Easley highway, which was developed into Hillcrest Memorial Park and the current location of Dillard Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dillard is survived by two daughters, Teresa Lesley of Six Mile and Denise Youngblood (John) of Greenville; six grandchildren, Scott Boothe (Bethany) of Powdersville, Jeremiah Boothe (Lindsey) of Six Mile, Adam Boothe (Leah) of Seneca, Ashley Rhoden (Gary) of Duncan, Stephanie Padgett (Hunter) of Chapin and Sara Youngblood of Greenville; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sybil Browning of Easley.

In addition to her loving husband of 60 years, Mrs. Dillard was preceded in death by her parents, Leo Cantrell and Bessie Bramlett Cantrell; and three sisters, Helen Cantrell, Sara Cantrell and Betty McKamey.

A private family service will be held.

WILLIAM THOMAS OWENS

 

EASLEY — Mr. William Thomas Owens, 95, husband of the late Alice Nalley Owens, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022.

Born on Jan. 17, 1927, in Pickens County, he was the son of the late William Lawrence Owens and the late Mamie Campbell Owens. Mr. Owens graduated in 1944 from Easley High School, where he played in the first high school band. He was awarded a music scholarship to Erskine College in 1945, but was unable to complete his studies due to being drafted in the United States Marine Corps. Thomas was stationed in Korea for two years and also played in the Marine Corps Band.

He began his banking career in 1947, and in 1949 he married the love of his life, of 67 years, Alice Nalley. Thomas finished the School of Banking at LSU in 1967 and after serving several roles in banking, including as a branch manager, he retired with 44 years of service in the banking industry.

Mr. Owens had a passion for music, singing, directing music, playing the piano and organ, and played for churches for 80 years. He was very active and enjoyed playing tennis into his 80s. Thomas will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him.

Surviving are a daughter, Betsy Owens Bryan (Russell) of Easley; two sisters, Doris Stone and Joann Crane, both of Easley; and four grandchildren, Dylan and Maria Bryan of Easley and Bo and Grant Gilstrap of Easley. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Owens was predeceased by a daughter, Alicia Diane Owens.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 1 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Fairview United Methodist Church Cemetery.
