CENTRAL — After winning their first two games last week, the Daniel High School boys’ basketball team moved on to the finals of its annual Christmas tournament against Wade Hampton on Thursday.

The Lions, however, came just short of championship glory, falling 59-50 to the Generals in the championship game.

“They did a really good job offensively of pushing the ball,” Daniel head coach Ben Touchberry said of Wade Hampton following the loss. “Defensively, they did a really good job of stopping our penetration and

New Year’s dishes bring good fortune

By Olivia Fowler
For the Courier
ofowler@thepccourier.com

All over the world, people believe that serving certain dishes on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day will bring a prosperous New Year.

Greens of almost any kind are chosen to represent folding money, pork is considered a prosperous meat and peas and beans represent coins in many cultures.

In the South, especially the Carolinas, collard greens, black-eyed peas and rice are universally thought to be most important for New Year’s dishes.

This tradition can be traced to several other regions, primarily Africa, France and the Caribbean.

The pork roast and saurkraut tradition is favored in states with strong German and Dutch heritages, and the orange brandy cake is a Greek Island tradition.

They’re all good. And I hope prosperity will come to you immediately after eating at least one of these dishes.

Trailing 16-3 after one quarter, the Blue Flame stormed back to close the gap and force overtime before coming out with a 49-43 win.

“They’ve done this all year,” Pickens head coach Jeff Harrelson said. “It seems like every game at some point, whether we’ve gotten up or gotten down, we’ve had to fight back and claw back. For whatever

Freeman named Liberty PD TREE award winner

LIBERTY — The Thomas’ Recognition of Excellent Employee (T.R.E.E) service award is an annual award that was started in 2019 to recognize the hard work, dedication and loyalty of the workers of the Liberty Police Department.

Each year the T.R.E.E. service award recipient is chosen by Chief Adam Gilstrap and a panel of employees. This year’s winner was awarded to Cpl. James “Jay” Freeman.

Freeman served as a state trooper for the South Carolina Highway Patrol for nine years before joining the Liberty Police Department force in August 2015. In June 2016, Freeman was promoted to the rank of corporal. Since that time, Freeman has been placed over the training department.

Freeman has been praised by the community for being courteous and informative during police encounters. The Liberty Police Department would like to congratulate Freeman as the 2021 T.R.E.E. service award recipient.

All four of these Christmas punches are non-alcoholic and can be enjoyed by children and adults.

They all taste good, are a little different and look beautiful in a punch bowl.

Freezing some of the punch with garnish in a Bundt cake pan adds a really festive touch to your holiday table.

Enjoy.
