Memorial Day ceremony honors county’s first Vietnam casualty

PICKENS — On Memorial Day, the community gathered at Charles Johnson Memorial Park to remember and recognize the service and sacrifices one Pickens family made to their country.

“You can now come to this location and tell your children and your grandchildren about Charles Johnson,” Mayor Fletcher Perry said.

A crowd came out Monday morning for the unveiling of signs dedicating the roads near the park to Specialist Fourth Class Charles Johnson, Pickens County’s first Vietnam War casualty.

Johnson was a member of A Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry of the U.S. Army and was killed in action on March 30, 1966, during Operation Lincoln in the Pleiku Province. He was 25.

PICKENS — The next time you ride down Shady Grove Road heading northwest out of Pickens, look off to your left after you cross Town Creek.

Gaze across the new crop of corn springing up out of the fields on the rich bottom land along the confluence of Town Creek and Twelve Mile Creek.

Take a deep breath and let your mind drift back in time. Go back 250 years or more and look again.

Yes, the cornfield is still there. But you also see little Cherokee children running along the creekside, and women

Blue Flame finish spring on high note

PICKENS — Spring practices have finally come to an end for the Pickens High School football team, and after a disappointing finish to last season, the Blue Flame are more than ready to rebound following a solid session over the past month.

“I think it went good,” Pickens head coach Chad Smith said of spring practice. “We were able to bring in coach (Allen) Sitterle and made some changes. It was definitely more disciplined this spring.”

Make Popeye proud and eat your spinach

By Olivia Fowler
For the Courier
ofowler@thepccourier.com

Some people don’t like spinach.

Or at least they think they don’t. I believe that’s because they’ve never eaten a good spinach dish.

Remember when you’re buying spinach to avoid leaves that are too big or brown on the edges. Stick with smaller green leaves.

I’m willing to bet you’ll like at least one of these recipes. Enjoy!

COLUMBIA — Over the weekend, athletes from all four of Pickens County’s high schools took part in the South Carolina Track and Field State Championships for their respective classifications, and it proved to be a very fruitful day, with three teams placing amongst the top 10 and three county athletes winning individual state titles.

The big winner over the weekend was Daniel High School, which placed both its boys’ and girls’ teams within the top 10 in Class 3A.

The Daniel girls were the closest to winning the title, finishing third with 64 points behind Waccamaw, which finished with 70 points, and region foe Seneca, which brought home the state title with 74 points.
