Saying no to reckless spending

Dear Editor,

A short distance off S.C. Highway 11, Pickens County just completed painting a fresh, bold, double yellow line down the middle of a one-mile stretch of dead-end road, servicing 20 homes in our small wooded neighborhood. According to the county, this was done in the name of “safety.”

Common sense begs the question — what is the real reason for striping our road? The lion’s share of this narrow road has a 15 mph speed

Writing the next big hit

I’m working on a new song, y’all, and I’m sure it’s gonna be a big hit!

It’s called “Dang Crooks South of Baltimore.”

Yep. I’m gonna sang about ever grievance anybody in America ever had and blame it all on them dang crooks in Washington.

And I’m gonna work it so that no matter which side of the fence you’re on, you’ll think I’m

Jesus loves the little children

Last week we talked about how desperately we need to reach all children for Christ, and I still have much to say on the matter.

God loves the little children and always made it a point to spend quality with them. Why? Because He knew that when a child learns about God and the eternal truth is planted deep within their hearts, it will always be there. One of the passages about that promise is found in

The effects of alcohol

Dear Editor,

Serving of alcohol has changed immensely. It used to be that the places that served alcohol were known as beer joints, on the outskirts of town, hidden away. Now every restaurant from one side of town to the other is serving alcohol. Every grocery store, handy mart and gas station sells alcohol, making it easy to purchase.

The alarming use of alcohol has cost the U.S. $249 billion per year. Alcohol can make you a fool, destroying homes, marriage and the family

A loony legislator, a celestial symbol, a fond farewell

Today’s topics are blazin’ hotheads, a question mark in the sky, and farewell too soon to “Little O.”

************

I heard a Texas state legislator on the radio the other day talking about “activist cities” in the Lone Star state passing “job-killing” ordinances.

These progressive do-gooders were insisting that employers allow their employees who work outside in the summer heat to take a 10-minute “water break” every four hours.

This is just my opinion, but if any company would consider such a rule so overbearing that they

Miss Queen and the judge

Frances Hagood was the youngest of nine. She was petite, pretty and precocious. Her father doted on her and called her “Queen,” and she was soon known as “Miss Queen” in Pickens County.

Her father did not want her to marry, and she cared for him until he died in 1904 — and that same year, she married Judge Thomas Joab Mauldin.

They built an addition to the house, originally built in 1856, added fluted Ionic columns and

Councilman explains his budget vote

Editor,

In a 4-2 vote, the county council passed $85.6 million in total spending for the fiscal year 2023-24, the budget that started this July 1. I voted “No” for a variety of reasons I want to explain.

Total revenue is up from $75.5 million to $84.4 million, or 12.1 percent year over year. That’s a lot.

There is lots of savings, too. The total unassigned general fund cash balance was $32.7 million, so that’s a 62 percent cash position relative to the general fund budget. The standard is 15-25 percent. Because cash on hand is so high and interest rates have gone up, the county has

If the dark side can deceive one generation

A child’s mind is like a sponge that is constantly absorbing more information. This can be a good thing if they are learning about God and how to develop a personal relationship with Him.

Unfortunately, a Godless society along with a secular public education system moved away from the golden rules, which were considered our Heavenly Father’s standard for holy and obedient

Marking four decades in newspapers

I’m not sure how it happened, but 40 years have passed since I first walked into the office of The Messenger and began my newspaper career.

The Messenger, in case you don’t remember, was a community newspaper that covered the Clemson-Central-Pendleton area. It eventually consolidated with its parent publication, now called The Journal.

I had been hounding old J.A. Gallimore, the owner and publisher at the time, for a job back

Forgiveness, not condemnation

Some of you might keep a close watch on the news, and others may listen occasionally or not at all, but whatever the case, you’ve heard enough to realize that it’s common for worldly information to be relayed from a biased perspective.

Worldviews and convictions dictate which side of the fence individuals are on, however, for the Christian, we are realizing that social politics has become a confusing puppet show that distracts us from what God is saying. We should know and trust that He is the only one that has all the
