Never let go of enthusiasm
I dedicate much of my writing to providing positive and encouraging words of hope and inspiration, but I also must be truthful, we are growing older.
I apologize for reminding us about that, but instead of all the negative attributes of aging, we should embrace it more like we are a fine wine that is becoming more delightful and appreciated. Those of us who are noticing a few gray hairs and aching joints, relax and count

Holiday party at the VA 2023
Have you given thought to how you’re going to step up this holiday season and give a hand to other veterans?
If you’re in a veterans group such as American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars, you’re in a perfect position to pull off a holiday party at the closest Department of Veterans Affairs medical center.
Your first step (after getting group consensus) will be to contact Volunary Services and let them know you’d like to host a party on one of the wards. (Suggestion: Long-term care has veterans who’ve been tAhere far too long.) Get their permission and input for the best path to take going

Can you dig it?
On Sept. 15, 1959, Nikita Khrushchev, general secretary of the Communist Party and premier of the Soviet Union (also known as “The
Butcher of Budapest”), and his wife, Nina, arrived in Washington for a summit meeting with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This was during the Cold War, when

Is the truth out there?
First, a Chinese spy balloon flies right over our heads. Then an $80 million fighter jet vanishes over our airspace.
Such weird occurrences in South Carolina surely put us in the crosshairs of the search for UFOs.
OK, that’s a stretch. But why shouldn’t the state that produced the legendary Lizard Man of Lee County be the most likely place for close encounters of the third kind?
You might think I’m making light of the possibility of extraterrestrial aircraft tooling around in

Something different
Dear Editor,
Now for something different.
I just wanted to share some thoughts with all of you. As I’ve heard it said of life, we all wear two faces. One face we wear in the public to show off. The other we wear at home among our families.
The two faces are always said to be worlds apart. That is very true. The family knows us like no other human does, that’s for sure! Only God

Should you fear the Reaper?
This is going to end up being a cautionary tale, so please read to the end.
I grew some Carolina Reapers this year. Hottest peppers on the planet, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
I used to wonder why anyone would want to grow them, because at 1,641,000 on the Scoville

Blessed are the peacemakers
In the Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 5, we read, “How blessed are those of a gentle spirit…those who show mercy…those whose hearts are pure…[and] how blessed are the peacemakers.”
Gentleness, mercy and purity of heart — how are these beautiful qualities related to peace? By linking these qualities together, Christ is laying the spiritual foundation of moral being and action, and giving us the vison of how to create peace. Through the power of His sovereignty and

Taking on the fentanyl crisis in US
Dear Editor,
On Aug. 31, my family and I attended a prayer vigil at the Pickens County Courthouse steps to commemorate those who have died from an overdose of the drug fentanyl. There were about 100 people in attendance. Most of the attendees have lost someone to an overdose of fentanyl. One of the speakers was a narcotics officer who said that about 200 people in America die from fentanyl overdose every day. My

Yes, we are special — but so are they
I came across an old fellow the other day who’s apparently been living in the woods behind our house for decades, and I had no idea he was there.
He moved very slowly and quietly, minding his own business, staying out of everybody’s way.
Until this particular day.
There he was, on the side of the road, looking befuddled.
He was a turtle.
I mean, a great big whopping turtle. He must have been at least 50 pounds,

Leapin’ lizards and dagnabbit!
During the Revolutionary War, Gen. George Washington issued a general order to his troops on Aug. 3, 1776, regarding the wicked practice of profane cursing and asked his officers to endeavor to stop it because “we can have little hopes of the blessing of Heaven on our Arms, if we
insult it by our impiety and folly.”
The popular expletive of the 17th and 18th century was “bloody.” It was definitely a word that
