Selling Easley residents on growth’s good?

There’s “a popular new place to live” in the Upstate, a Greenville Chamber of Commerce official is quoted as saying in a recent article in a Greenville newspaper.

This popular town “is emerging as the new destination for workers and families,” adds an organization called the South Carolina Community Alliance, which used the chamber of commerce quote to bolster its assertion.

“Officials” of this wonderfully popular town “are creating new residential options — with an

The pothole dilemma

As we travel down the road of life, we find some roads are smooth, and some roads have potholes. It’s the time of year when potholes start popping up in roads like weeds in a flower garden. When you pull up a weed, two more pop up in its place. When a hole is patched, two more will pop up down the road. Meanwhile, when it rains, the pothole that got patched washes out, and now you are dodging three potholes.

Potholes got their name from potters who would dig deep ruts in the roads to get to the clay

Conservative group airs grievances

Dear Editor,

This is an email sent to all of our county council members:

Conservatives of the Upstate members need to air out our grievances. We are not pleased with the votes half of this council has cast over the past couple of years. We wish to enumerate those grievances. Three of you, in particular, will soon be up for reelection.

  1. You voted for allowing alcohol on county properties and supported the Sunday alcohol sales referendum, which further endangeredYou must be logged in to view this content.

Birds of a feather flock together

There is a huge difference between personal transformation and just talking and wishing. We can counsel, advise, pray and encourage someone, but they are the only ones who can discipline their thoughts, take the initiative and chart a new direction.

For example, being an optimistic person does not fall out of the air and happen on its own, but rather it’s a learned behavior similar to developing bad habits such as a negative attitude or a rude personality. We cannot prevent unpleasant things from happening to us, but we decide if

Spying sealife, smiling selfies and senatorial selection

Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any crazier, a Russian spy whale was spotted some 900 miles away from where he was supposed to be.

A what?!

Yes, a Russian “spy whale.” First, their spy balloon blows off-course (supposedly) right over us, and now this!

But the story I saw was not about the Russians employing a Kraken to spy on us. Apparently we

School board has authority

I read the story about the school board being sued for removing the book, “Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You.” I read the complaint filed by three parents, the NAACP and the ACLU. It is a weak case, and I hope the school board has the courage to stand by their decision.

Whether or not you agree with their decision to remove the book, the school board has the

The tax man taketh

Benjamin Franklin said that “nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Franklin, a philosopher, newspaper publisher and inventor of the lightning rod and bifocals, had also laid the groundwork for the Constitution. However, this balding, paunchy, nerdy guy was adored by women and would get the ladies all “aflutter.”

Franklin entered into a common-law marriage with plain and plump Deborah Read, a childhood

Are we dedicated to accomplish His will?

We might as well lay all the cards on the table and establish that it’s easier to go to church and put some money in the offering plate than to develop a consistent relationship with God.

Along with our genuine love for Him is to recognize the need for a fervent prayer life. Being religious without praying is popular. Why is this? Because we do not care enough to pray. Prayer meetings? Really? The first thing that comes to our mind is that we can pray at home. This is true, but if you already have a faithful prayer life, it seems you would want to be the first one to

A time to remember and respect

This is a week when we honor those who died in battle for our country.

There was a time when society seemed to be more sensitive and compassionate about casualties of war, but today there are many distractions that cause the mind and conscience to skip over what is important. Another example is the neglect to teach young children about who God is. Nevertheless, some people might not realize there is a distinction between Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the United States armed forces, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle. In other words, the purpose of Memorial Day is to memorialize the veterans who made the

Putting my foot in my mouth

I have finally discovered something I am good at. No, not just good — I’m an expert. I’ve been doing it for years.

Whether attending conferences or cocktail parties, I am very skillful at putting my foot in my mouth. There is an old rhyme that says “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That is not true. Hurtful words can sting, injure, bruise and cause you to lose confidence. Hurtful words hurt.

The expression “put your foot in it” surfaced in Britain in the 1800s and meant that you had
