Flame reach third round for first time since 1989

PICKENS — After cruising to victory in the first round over South Aiken, the sixth-ranked Pickens Blue Flame girls’ basketball team expected a greater challenge on Saturday night against the 10th-ranked Riverside Warriors.

Instead, the Blue Flame were able to control the game in its entirety, playing arguably their most complete game of the season in a resounding 72-42 win to advance to state quarterfinals for only the second time in program history.

Daniel season ends against Hurricanes

PIEDMONT — Down three with 30 seconds to go against No. 3 Wren in the third round of the Class 3A playoffs on Monday, the Daniel Lions boys’ basketball team knew their next possession would make or break them with a trip to the Upper State championship on the line.

COLUMBIA — Five times before Saturday, the Liberty Red Devil wrestling team went to the state championship, only to fall short of their ultimate goal.

According to Liberty head coach Dale Burrell, he knew that when the 2023 squad took on North Central for the Class 2A-1A state duals championship on Saturday, it wouldn’t happen again.

County hoops teams prepare for postseason

COUNTY — The South Carolina High School League basketball playoffs begin this week, and Pickens County schools will be well represented, with each of the four county schools having a team in the chase to bring home a state championship.

Pickens High School’s January Scholar-Athletes of the Month are Christian McCrady (wrestling) and Emmaleigh Stone (varsity basketball). The pair were recognized at Friday’s home basketball game against Easley. This month’s award was sponsored in honor of longtime girls’ basketball coach Butch Morris. McCrady is the son of Gregory and Valerie McCrady. Stone is the daughter of Rory and Kristin Stone.

Liberty downs Abbeville in round two

LIBERTY — Ranked atop the South Carolina Class 2A high school wrestling standings, the Liberty wrestling  team opened its playoff run in the second round on Saturday against the Abbeville Panthers after receiving a first-round bye.

The Red Devils lived up to their lofty ranking, taking down the Panthers in less than 20 minutes with a 78-6 win.
