EASLEY — Falling behind 5-0 in the fourth inning against York on May 18, the Easley Green Wave softball team seemed to have lost all the momentum they had built on their historic playoff run.
However, the Green Wave proved to have much of the same fight that brought them to that point down the stretch, with senior Maggie Spence cutting the Cougar lead to just two runs as the teams entered the final frame.
Heading to bat in the bottom of the seventh with the game on the line, Easley went down in order to end its season in a 5-3 loss.
“I’m proud of them. They didn’t give up,” Easley head coach Trish Spence said after the game, fighting

COLUMBIA — After letting a two-goal lead slip away in regulation, the Daniel High School boys’ soccer team’s state championship hopes rested on the result of penalty kicks after 110 minutes of hard-fought play.
The Lions turned to senior captain Liam Desjardins for the first kick, and he delivered to put the Lions ahead, but it was the play of keeper Coleman Wright in the moments after that stole the show.
The junior blocked three of four Brookland-Cayce attempts to give the Lions the win and secure their first Class 3A state championship since 2003.
“I think he would be honest and tell you that maybe he made a couple of mistakes to let BC back into the game, but I can’t say enough about his ability to bounce back,” Daniel head coach Phillip Boyer said of Wright. “He could have let that defeat him, and his head

Special Lions group culmination of Boyer’s culture
‘‘I can’t lie and say I always believed the Daniel High School boys’ soccer team was going to pull out the state championship win against Brookland-Cayce on Friday.
When the Lions went up 2-0 in the first half, I was ready to call the game. Then, when Brookland-Cayce stormed back to take the lead in the final five minutes,
I was ready to call it once again for the other side, and once again I was proven to be wrong as Liam Desjardins hit the equalizer from 52 yards out.
By the start of extra time, I realized that neither team was going to give until the final whistle, and for the first time I got it right, with the Lions pulling out the heart-pounding state championship win in penalty

POWDERSVILLE — Playing in what head coach Phillip Boyer described as the most intense game of his career, the Daniel High School boys’ soccer team clawed its way out to a 2-0 lead against Powdersville on Monday night before a last-minute goal by the Patriots cut the lead to one.
With the season on the line, the Lions’ back line hunkered down as it had all night, never allowing the Patriots to gain an inch and outlasting them through an excruciatingly long stoppage time to pull out the 2-1 win in the Class 3A Upper State championship match and secure a return to the state

EASLEY — Easley held off a pesky Greenville team Wednesday night in the first round of the Class 4A District 2 playoffs, winning 6-2.
It took Easley a while to feel comfortable, as Greenville matched the Wave run for run early on.
“It was definitely not our best game,” Easley coach Trish Spence said. “Our bats were not on like they normally are. We played great defense. The girls played

Green Wave see season end at home
EASLEY — After picking up their second straight region championship and a first-round bye, the Easley High School boys soccer team kicked off the playoffs May 4 against the Indian Land Warriors.
Despite their season of successes, the Green Wave lost 3-0 in what was described as a “winnable game” by head coach Ross Goodacre due to some bad bounces falling in favor of the Warriors and a number of missed opportunities on the offensive end.
“The game plan was there and the formation matched up perfectly,” Goodacre said. “We were
