CARTER B. MATTHEWS JR.

GREENVILLE — Carter Broward Matthews Jr., 72, husband of Bille Morris Mathews died on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021.

Carter was born in Pensacola, Fla., a son of the late Carter Broward and Etna Louise Carpenter Matthews. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama Culver House School of Business, where he was a member of Theta Chi. Carter retired as vice president of Continental Goodman Conveyer and Equipment Company, now a division of Komatsu. He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Easley, where he served as a lector and was former junior and senior warden and a member of the Episcopal Church Men.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Bille Morris Matthews; sons, Carter Andrew Matthews (Charli) of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Lee M. Matthews (Alexis) of Anderson; grandchildren, Jackson Matthews, Andrew Matthews, Karli Matthews, Samuel Matthews and Addison Crawford; as well as a sister, Kathryn Matthews Perry (Mike) of Woodbridge, Va.

Memorial services were conducted on Jan. 3 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1200 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC with the Rev. Lee Dudley officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. Michael’s Memorial Columbarium at a later date.

LEOTA SOUTHERLAND MOORE

EASLEY — Leota Southerland Moore, 84, daughter of the late Elighue and Minnie Lewis Southerland, passed away on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, at her home.

Leota was born on Sept. 5, 1937, in Pickens County. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by the father of her children, Billy Moore; children, Melinda Jane Turner (Marshall) of Pickens and Frances Arlene McMillan (Robert) of Lexington; grandchildren, Matthew Turner (Samantha), Nathan Turner (Sarah), Marissa Lockmiller (Charlie), and Elizabeth, Alexandria and Robbie McMillan; and sisters, Lila Blakely, Hazel Autry, Barbara Yount and Thelma Collingsworth.

Leota was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Jerry Southerland, Alvin Southerland, Johnny Southerland, Gary Southerland, Brandon Southerland and Calvin Southerland; and sisters, Annie Catron and Dorothy Hudson.

Funeral services for Leota will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7, in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home – Pickens Chapel. Visitation will be held an hour prior in the chapel starting at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

The family will be at the home of Susan Davis.

DOUGLAS PRESTON ‘DOUG’ ANDERS

LIBERTY — Douglas Preston Anders, 70, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at his daughter’s residence in Liberty.

A native of Pickens, Doug was born on Jan. 12, 1951, to the late William Oliver and Mary Ellen Rhodes Anders. He was an outdoorsman and loved playing with his dog and watching football, and in his earlier years was a motorcycle enthusiast.

Those left behind to cherish his memories include his daughter, April Dover (Brad); grandchildren, Seth Dover and Emma Dover; his siblings, Joe Bill Anders and Faye A. Lyda; and his nieces, Christi, Kelli Jo, Robyn, Mindy and Wendy.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 2 in the sanctuary of Norris First Baptist Church.

GARY DON ELLIS

 

PICKENS — Gary Don Ellis, 72, husband of 45 years to Elaine Ellis, passed away on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, at his home.

A native of Ector, Texas, Mr. Ellis was born on Nov. 7, 1949, to the late Jacob Marshall and Mary Ethel Manning Ellis. Gary was a United States Army veteran and a truck driver.

In addition to his wife of the home, survivors include his children, Amy Ellis Waters of Pickens and Jacob Shane Ellis of Central; grandchildren, Elisha Waters of Pickens and Emmalyn Ellis of Pendleton; and a sister, Jessie Wright of Durant, Okla.

Mr. Ellis was predeceased by his parents, six brothers, Marvin Ellis, Joe Ellis, Junior Ellis, Charlie Ellis, Vernon Ellis and JR Ellis; and five sisters, Judith Ann Ellis, Vernell Hankins, Allie North, Patricia Land and Betty Johnston, all of Texas.

No formal services are scheduled at this time, and the family is at the home.

EDNA PATTERSON TALLEY

PICKENS — Edna Patterson Talley, 88, daughter of the late Roland and Nina Galloway Patterson, passed away peacefully on Friday Dec. 31, 2021, surrounded by her family at her home.

Edna was born in the Cane Brake community of South Carolina on Nov. 4, 1933. She was a graduate of Pickens High School and a member of Holy Springs Baptist Church. Edna retired from Platt Saco Lowell. She loved many things, and some of her favorites were flower gardening, birdwatching, road trips with her son, watching “Judge Judy” and one of her favorite movies, “The Sound of Music.” Edna loved her family, and they brought her great joy. She made the best apple fritters and fruit cake and was the best Moma and Granny, and she will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends, especially her best buddy, her dog, “Kaiser”

Those left behind to cherish her memory include her children, Eddie Talley of Pickens, Elaine Talley Murray (Mike) of Pickens and Eugene Talley of Pickens; her grandchildren, Matthew Murray (Rebecca) of Pickens, Casey Murray (Amanda) of Pickens and Sarah Talley of Enoree; great-grandchildren, Ali-Gayle, Ava, Adalynn, Annabelle, Savannah, Hayden, Declan and Brooks; and her siblings, Brackett Patterson (Claudia), Carol Ayers and Dianne Patterson; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Talley was predeceased by a son, Earnie Talley; her brothers, Lee Patterson and Jay Harold Patterson; and her sister, Gayle Bennett.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Pruitt Health Hospice Care, her friends at Holly Springs Baptist Church, Edna’s son, Eugene, for his constant care of her, and her sister, Carol, her brother, Brackett, and friend, Susie Bell, for their loving support.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Edna’s memory to Holly Springs Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, in the sanctuary of Holly Springs Baptist Church at 2 p.m., with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

FREDA J. CLARK

EASLEY — Freda J. Clark, 73, loving wife of 45 years to Ronald Clark, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, at her residence.

A native of Anderson County, Freda was born on Sept. 11, 1948, to the late Fred and Mary Ethel Kelly. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister.

In addition to her husband Ronald, Mrs. Clark is survived by her children, Patti Medlin of Easley, Lynn Barnette (Jerry) of Easley, Eddie Clark of Easley and Stephanie Luben (Ward) of Piedmont; her grandchildren, Cassidy Galloway (Travis), Peyton Clark, Jake Clark, Michael, Jessica and Eric; great-grandchildren, Landon and Lilly Belle; and five sisters, Elaine, Becky, Phyllis, Vicki and Kim.

Along with her parents, Mrs. Clark was predeceased by her grandson, Evan Clark; one sister, Jerilyn Alexander; and one brother, Roger Kelly.

A graveside service to honor Mrs. Clark’s life will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, beginning at 11 a.m.

Flowers will be accepted.

CAROLYN KELLEY

LIBERTY — Carolyn Duncan Kelley, 78, of Richwood Drive, died on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021, at her residence.

Born in Six Mile, she was the widow of Leon Russell Kelley and a daughter of the late Henry Lawrence and Dovie Stewart Duncan. She was the last remaining survivor of her immediate family. She enjoyed reading and watching television, but she really loved taking care of her cats. She was retired from the textile industry and also had worked as a custodian at Liberty Middle School. She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her daughter, Karen Kelley of Liberty; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Duncan; and three sisters, Lois Scruggs, Avanelle Black and Ruth Conley.

Graveside services to honor the life of Mrs. Kelley were held on Dec. 30 at Liberty Memorial Gardens, conducted by Rev. William Heatherly.

RUTH NALLEY

EASLEY — Mrs. Ruth Hipp Nalley, 82, wife of the late Cecil Masters Nalley, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, Dec. 27, 2021.

Born in Greenville County, a daughter of the late Thomas Jesse Hipp and the late Edna Hannon Hipp, Mrs. Nalley retired from U.S. Finishing and was a longtime active member of Cedar Rock Baptist Church, where she served as the church organist for more than 50 years. Ruth had a love and passion for music, but her greatest love was for her Lord and family. She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Surviving are her son, Cecil Steven Nalley (Vanessa) of Liberty; her daughter, Rebecca Ann Lingefelt of Easley; a brother, Ronny Hipp (Harriett) of Travelers Rest; a sister, Martha Freeman (Carl) of Easley; five grandchildren, Jenna L. Atkinson (Emery) of Lugoff, Nina L. Matthews (Kelvin) of Easley, Megan L. Giordani (Tony) of Greer, Jason Nalley (Tiffany) of Liberty and Andrew Nalley of Liberty; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Nalley was predeceased by four brothers, Edgar, Kenneth, Major and Jim Hipp; and a sister, Helen Mull.

Graveside services were held on Dec. 30 at the Cedar Rock Baptist Church cemetery.

No formal visitation is planned.

DON NEWTON

EASLEY — Mr. George Donald “Don” Newton, 68, husband of Linda Tinsley Newton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021.

Born on Aug. 29, 1953, in Anderson County, he was the son of the late George Isaac Newton and the late Jonell Herron Newton. Mr. Newton was a 1971 graduate of Easley High School and Southern Wesleyan College, where he received his bachelor’s degree in human resources. He was the owner and operator of Easley Builders Supply and Newton’s Ace Hardware and an active member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Shekinah Glory Bible Fellowship Class.

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 41 years, are his son, Evan Newton (Melanie) of Central; his daughter, Edie Newton Greenwood (Eric) of Easley; his sister, Saundra Renee Newton of Easley; his sister-in-law, Terri Tinsley French (Phil) of Easley; his brother-in-law, Chuck Tinsley (Sue) of Easley; three grandchildren, Ellis Greenwood, Ashby Newton and Ava Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 31 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, with Rev. Dr. David Gallamore officiating.

The family is at the home.

HELEN CROWE SMITH

EASLEY — Mrs. Helen Victoria Crowe Smith, 99, wife of the late Jasper Crawford and the late James Dan Smith, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 24, 2021.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Thomas Crowe and the late Carrie Kay Crowe, Mrs. Smith retired from BASF and was a member of Ruhamah Baptist Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved music and sharing her musical talents with others.

Surviving are a daughter, Pam Harris (Randy) of Easley; nine grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands and parents, Mrs. Smith was predeceased by two sons, Paul Clifton “Buddy” Crawford and Anthony Eugene “Tony” Crawford; a daughter, Sandra Crawford Rice; six brothers, Roy, J.B., Paul “Peanut”, Carl, Homer and Billie; seven sisters, Ethel, Marjorie, Ruth, Inez, Ovaline, Opal and Flora; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held on Jan. 3 in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown. Burial followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

RUTH FOWLER

LIBERTY — Ruth Ann Bryant Fowler, 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021.

Born in Liberty, she was a daughter of the late Rome and Ollie Owens Bryant.

Mrs. Fowler worked in textiles for many years and later worked at Liberty High School. She was a longtime member of Calumet Baptist Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Holcombe (Dan) of Norris and Debbie Stewart (Al) of Liberty; four sons, Roy Fowler (Cindy) of Easley, Craig Fowler (Laurie) of Lugoff, Jimmy Fowler (Candice) of Orangeburg and Larry Fowler of Liberty; two sisters, Joyce Porter and Margie Fowler, both of Liberty; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 18 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services to honor Mrs. Fowler’s life were conducted on Jan. 4 in the Liberty Mortuary chapel. Burial was held at Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery. A livestream of the service will be available by visiting her obituary at libertymortuary.com.

ARIC MARTIN FORCE

STARR — Aric Martin Force, 56, son of the late Edward Chester Force and the late Karen Ann Lyneis Gorup, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2021, at his home.

A native of Burbank, Calif., Mr. Force was born on May 10, 1965. Aric owned his own construction company, “Force Construction.” He loved buying and selling land all over, loved fishing and had a huge heart for animals. Aric was a hardworking, loving, kind man who will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his step-father, Roy Gorup; his daughter, Gabrielle Berman; grandchildren, David, Kaydence and Chandler Berman; and his siblings, Brian Force, Darren Force and Michelle Gorup.

HUESTON MERCK

 

CENTRAL — Hueston J. Merck, 87, died on Friday, Dec. 31, 2021, at his home.

Born in Six Mile, he was a son of the late Frank Jefferson and Vera Gertrude Dodd Merck. He was the owner/operator of Merck’s VW Repair for more than 44 years.

Mr. Merck served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of Gap Hill Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Annie Josephine Merck of the home; a son, Rev. Billy Ray Merck (Terreca) of Six Mile; a daughter, Donna “Tuttie” Chappell of Easley; two grandchildren, Rev. Jeremy Merck (Stephanie) of Norris and Katelyn Roper (Patrick) of Six Mile; five great-grandchildren, Kinsey, Tanner, Ella, Kayedin and Brysen; and three brothers, Richard Merck, Leon Merck and Eugene Merck.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Josh Merck; a son-in-law, Avery Chappell; two sisters, Bobby McAnulty and Myrtle Merck; and a brother, Jimmie Merck.

Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Merck will be conducted at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Gap Hill Baptist Church, by Dr. Boyce Whitman, Rev. Billy Ray Merck and Rev. Jeremy Merck. Burial will be at the Gap Hill Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Wednesday from 11 a.m.-noon at the church.

RICHARD J. SAVAGEAU

 

EASLEY — Richard John Savageau, 91, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022, at Oakview Park Assisted Living Facility following a lengthy illness.

Richard was born in Sanford, Maine. He was the son of the late George Savageau and Beatrice Langlais and his stepfather, Adrian Langlais. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955 at Lowry AFB in Denver, Colo., and McConnell AFB in Wichita, Kan. working in electronics maintenance. While at Lowry AFB, Richard stood guard at the office of President Dwight D. Eisenhower when the president was at his Denver Summer White House.

Upon completion of his military service, Richard began working for Saco Lowell and continued until his retirement as a design engineer. While there, he earned numerous patents for textile machinery. He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Greenville.

Richard was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine Landry Savageau and then his longtime companion, Nancy Belle.

He is survived by his sons, David Savageau and his wife, Teeny, of Easley, Michael Savageau and wife, Debra, of Frederick, Md., and daughter, Linda Savageau McCollough and husband, Lorin, of Lawrenceville, Ga. He is also survived by granddaughters, Dr. Nicole Savageau of Austin, Texas, and Stephanie Savageau of Easley.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley, SC 29642.

PAMELA VICTORIA HARRIS MORRIS

EASLEY — Mrs. Pamela Victoria Harris Morris, 60, of Easley went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Dec. 31, surrounded by family who loved her very much as she exited this life and entered her new one.

Pamela was born in Pickens County, on Nov. 1, 1961, to the late William Edward and Mildred Syphronia Guthrie Harris. Pamela was a graduate of Daniel High School in Central and was a hard worker. During her working career, she gave 19 loyal years to West Point Stevens of Seneca then 15 loyal years to Reliable Sprinkler Inc. of Liberty. She was a loving mother, nana, sister and friend.

Pamela is survived by her daughters, Amber N. Morris of Central and Autumn S. Barron of Easley; six grandchildren who she loved very much and was very proud of, Cheyenne, Sebastian, Michael Jr., Josalynn, Jazmine and Connor; her sisters, Sherry of Liberty, Cynthia (Jim) of Arizona and Naomi of Easley; and her brothers, Steve of Cateechee and Timothy of Norris. Pamela is also survived by many special nieces and nephews and her little dog, Prancer.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, in the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.
