DON LEMOIN WINCHESTER

EASLEY — Donald “Don” Lemoin Winchester, 86, widower of Ann Dalton Winchester, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

Born in Six Mile, he was the son of the late Willoughby “Good” and June Abercrombie Winchester.

Mr. Winchester served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. Prior to his retirement, Don spent more than 35 years as a dedicated employee of Ace Hardware, where he managed both the Pickens and Powdersville stores. He was an active member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Miriam Payne, and her husband, Jeff; son, Chip Winchester, and his wife, Lulu; granddaughter, Jordan Payne, and her wife, Yeoman; grandson, Jed Payne, and his wife, Kaeli; granddaughter, Kaleigh Winchester; great-grandson, Quin Payne; great-granddaughter, Elliot Payne; and sister, Bert Clark.

Mr. Winchester was proud to be called “Popeye” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed keeping busy, spending time outside and tending to his yard. He excelled at cooking. Mr. Winchester received great joy from serving others and was known for his humble attitude and positive outlook.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Winchester was preceded in death by three sisters, Rubye Mann, Ruth Saad and Erelene Mann; and brother, Clyde Winchester.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Willows of Easley for all of the loving care and support provided to Mr. Winchester during his time as a resident.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, at 10:30 a.m. in the Northwest Chapel of Thomas McAfee Funeral Home. Seating will be limited to allow for proper social distancing. The family requests that all guests in attendance follow the CDC guidelines regarding social distancing and wearing a mask.

FRED JAMES PORTER

EASLEY — Fred James Porter, 85, affectionately known as “Poppy”, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

He was the son of the late Rufus Earl Porter and Lola Ramey Porter from the Arial Mill community.

He served in the U.S. Army and retired from Lockheed Martin after 28 years of service. He was a wonderful husband, and is survived by his wife, Betty Harbuck Porter. Fred was a loving father and is survived by his three sons and their wives, Tony and Wanda Porter, James and Angie Porter, and Mark and Kristin Porter. He was a caring grandfather to his nine grand-children. He loved to laugh and he was always ready with a joke to make others laugh. He will be dearly missed, but we are thankful he is walking the streets of gold with Jesus.

A visitation will be held from 1-2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, at Georges Creek Baptist Church, 1991 Saluda Dam Road, Easley, SC 29640, with the funeral service following at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow the service at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

RUBY SHEPHERD JAMES

EASLEY — Ruby Shepherd James, 92, went to Heaven to be with her late husband of 54 years, Wallace James, on Sunday, July 12, 2020.

Ruby was born in Swain County, N. C., on Sept. 8, 1927, daughter of the late William Coleman Shepherd and Ollie Bowers Shepherd. She was a sweet and caring soul who loved spending time with her family. Ruby was retired from Swirl Inc. in Easley, and she enjoyed gardening and cooking wonderful meals for those she loved. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, including her infant son, Billy Lee, and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are her four children, Tommy James (Joyce) of Easley, Barbara Johnson (Mike) of Easley, Doris Duckworth (Carlyle) of Pickens and Tony James (Barbara) of Easley; seven grandchildren, Steven James (Lori), Rhonda James, Sandra Johnson, Sherry Crowe (Barry), Tammy Byers (David), Terry Duckworth (Tracy) and Becki Owens (Travis); nine great-grandchildren, Michael Harrison, Brandy Harrison, Reagan Crowe, Katrina Alexander, Sean Byers, Hunter Duckworth, Logan Hall, Tanner Owens and Dylan James; and seven great-great-grandchildren, Luke, Ryland, Gavin, MaKenna, Chesnee, Carson and Gracie. She is also survived by two special sisters-in-law, Lillian Shepherd and Betty Ann Shepherd, both of Bryson City, N.C., and many loving nieces and nephews.

The family received friends on Wednesday, July 15, at Dillard Funeral Home, with funeral services following in the chapel with Rev. Randy McAlister officiating. Burial was at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens.

ROBERT WAYNE ARNOLD SR.

EASLEY — Mr. Robert Wayne Arnold Sr., 70, husband of the late Nancy Jennings Arnold, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, July 17, 2020.

Born in Pickens County, a son of the late Robert Lee Arnold and the late Ruth Bowman Arnold, Mr. Arnold retired from Reynolds Company with 25-plus years of service and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. Mr. Arnold was a hardworking man who loved to fish and ride his Harley-Davidson, but his greatest love was for his Lord and family. He will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew him.

Surviving are three sons, Robert Wayne Arnold Jr. (Shelby) of Easley, Bruce Gene Arnold of Liberty and Burley Woods of Simpsonville; two brothers, Tommy Arnold and Teddy Arnold; three sisters, Annie Mae Roach, Linda Day and Julia Arnold; and one granddaughter, Christy Arnold.

Graveside services were held on July 20 at the Georges Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

EVELYN M. DUNCAN

PICKENS — Evelyn M. Duncan, 86, of 205 Blue Ridge Drive, Pickens, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2020.

A native of Pickens County, Ms. Duncan was born June 2, 1934, a daughter of the late Paul E. and Ollie Day McKinney. Evelyn was a graduate of Pickens High School, Class of 1953. Some of her most fond memories of her younger years were from her days as a cheerleader for the Pickens Blue Flame state championship football team and being a member of the Lady Blue Flame basketball team.

She was employed by Mayfair Textile Mill in Pickens, from which she retired. Evelyn was a friend to many and always enjoyed spending time with others. Her favorite things included spending time with her large family. She especially enjoyed time visiting with her children and grandchildren, as well as fishing and camping with her brothers, her sister and their families.

Survivors include three sons, Richard Paul Clayton Sr. (Lynne), Robby J. Duncan (Brenda) and Kenny J. Duncan (Angel), all of Pickens; sister, Barbara Duncan (Donn) of Piedmont; brothers, Bobby McKinney (Mildred) and Curt McKinney, both of Pickens; grandchildren, Richard Clayton Jr. (Jennifer), David Clayton, Kathryn Clayton (Kyle Killion), John Clayton, Tyler Duncan and Daniel Duncan (Rachel); and great-grandchildren, Owen Duncan, Elijah Duncan, Lauren Winch and Lilly Winch.

In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by three brothers, Glen McKinney, Harold “Bootsie” McKinney and Ray McKinney; and a great-grandson, Emmit Duncan.

JUDY HATTAWAY

EASLEY — Judy Elizabeth Foster Hattaway, 69, wife of Michael Bateon Hattaway, went home to be with the Lord on Friday July 15, 2020.

Mrs. Hattaway was born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Rafaell L. and Ruth Elizabeth Scruggs Foster. She was retired from Easley Place Assisted Living in Easley as a certified nursing assistant. Mrs. Hattaway was a member of Bethany Church of God.

Survivors include her husband of 19 years, Michael Hattaway; a son, Joe L. Foster; a stepson, Doug Hattaway; and two stepdaughters, Melissa Roper and Mitsi Upshaw (Craig); nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Lillie Faye Foster.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hattaway was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Foster.

Funeral services were held on July 21 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Roger Stephens officiating. Entombment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

RONALD DAVID BALDWIN

EASLEY — Ronald David Baldwin, 61, husband of Denise Campbell Baldwin, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at his home.

Mr. Baldwin was born in Greenville County, son of Martha Baldwin and the late Ray Howard Baldwin. He was a huge Clemson fan, and his family requested that everyone wear Clemson apparel to his graveside service.

Survivors include four children, Justin David Baldwin (BJ) of Easley, Dillon Lee Baldwin (Hillary) of Easley, Lori Elizabeth Baldwin (Brian) of Marietta and Nathan Reed Baldwin (Beth) of Pickens; two grandsons, Hack Gilstrap and Denver Baldwin; one granddaughter due in January; and two brothers, Rev. Rick Baldwin (Dee) of Pendleton and Rev. Russell Baldwin (Shannon) of Liberty.

A graveside service was held on July 19 at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Gardens.

BETTY G. WILSON

SIX MILE — Betty Galbreath Wilson, 80, of 3044 Walhalla Highway, Six Mile, widow of the late Clyde Wilson, passed from this life on Thursday, July 16, 2020.

Mrs. Wilson was born on Dec. 10, 1939, in Pickens County, a daughter of the late James E. and Velma S. Galbreath. Betty attended Open Praise Fellowship Holiness in Easley. She loved the outdoors, the mountains, flowers and she especially loved her family.

Survivors include her daughters, Sandra Nelson of Six Mile, Susan Wilson of the home and Janet DeRossett (Don) of Six Mile; grandchildren, Chad Nelson, Kellie Nelson, Kevin DeRossett (Beth) and Kayla Gillespie (Larry); great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Lydia, Olivia, Erilyn, Noelle, Aubrey, Rebecca, Emmett, Madie, Josiah and Alyssa; and a brother, Earl Galbreath (Marie). Betty is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Galbreath; sister, Patricia Leopard; and her grandson’s wife, Michelle DeRossett.

A funeral service was held on July 20 in the chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home.

Burial followed at Gap Hill Church cemetery.

JAMES ALVIN LOWE

EASLEY — James Alvin Lowe, 91, husband of the late Faye Freeman Lowe, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2020, at Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson.

A native of Pickens County, Mr. Lowe was born Nov. 25, 1928, the son of the late Sherman Alvin and Inez Holder Lowe. James worked in the textile industry and retired from Alice Manufacturing in Easley, where he worked for many years.

James was a United States Army veteran. He honorably served his country from December 1950 until December 1952, achieving the rank of corporal.

Survivors include his daughter, Vickie Cooper of Easley; granddaughters, Lisa Mason (Steve) and Pam Keenan (Paul), both of Easley; grandson, Robert Cooper of Easley; great-grandchildren, Robert Keenan (Erin) of Liberty, Ashley Manzyuk (Eli) of Easley, Carrie McDonald of Easley, Derrick Mason (Amber) of Central and Christian Smith (David) of Aiken; and great-great-grandchildren, Larson Keenan of Liberty, Dalton Keenan of Liberty and Finley Mason of Central.

In addition to his wife and parents, James was predeceased by a son, David Minter of Easley; sister, Thelma Lowe Cooper of Easley; brother, Garfield Lowe of Easley; and great-great-granddaughter, Reagan McDonald of Easley.

THOMAS ‘TOM’ CHARLES HARPER

SENECA — Thomas “Tom” Charles Harper died on Friday, July 10, 2020, at his home.

Mr. Harper was born in Greenville, N.C., to the late Thomas Wilson Harper and Maude Plonk Harper. He graduated from Gaston College and attended Brevard College and UNC-Charlotte. He was retired from Bartlett Nuclear Inc. He was also previously employed by the city of Walhalla, Duke Power and John E. Jenkins Inc. He was an avid tennis enthusiast and was a member of Spindle Tree Racquet Club for more than 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Frances D. Harper of the home; stepsons, Matthew (Jacqueline) Reynolds of Pendleton and Micah Reynolds (Caitlin Payne) of Del Norte, Colo.; sisters, Susan (Gerard) Roche of Cramerton, N.C., Mary Louise (James) Ware of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Barbara Harper of Cramerton, N.C.; and three step-grandchildren.

WADE LEE MARTIN

EASLEY — Wade Lee Martin, 73, husband of Marilyn Martin, went Home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 11, 2020.

Wade retired from the United States Postal Service with more than 30 years of service and was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force and was a proud Vietnam veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Clyde Martin and Iva Belle Brown Martin of Seneca; and brothers, George Martin, Oliver Martin, Eddie Martin and Wendell Martin.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, he is survived by his sons, Chad Martin of Easley and Russ Martin of Taylors; daughter, Amanda (Seth) Wylie of Liberty; brother, Freeman Martin (Helen) of Seneca; sisters, Emily Senn of Camano Island, Wash., Estelle (Tony) Smith of Westminster and Anne (Naz) Irizarry of Merrimack, N.H.; brother-in-law, Charles Dean Hamilton of Liberty; and sisters-in-law, Linda Hamilton of Easley, Linda Martin of Niles, Mich., and Mary Ann Martin of Seneca. He was a loving grandfather to five grandchildren, Bryson Martin (Nicole), Anna Claire Wylie, Chloe Martin, Molly Wylie and Aubrey Martin.

Private graveside services were held on July 17.

WANDA JUNE LANGSTON ROPER

LIBERTY — Wanda June Langston Roper, 87, wife of the late Robert Roper Sr., passed away from this earthly life into her heavenly home on Monday, July 13, 2020.

Born on June 29, 1933, in Oklahoma City, Okla., she was the daughter of the late Clovis Dewey Langston and Mary Vallie Richardson Langston. Wanda enjoyed watching sports teams, especially baseball and football. Her favorite team was the Oklahoma University Sooners. Wanda also liked dancing to music, and she loved her children and grandchildren dearly. She was a retired lab technician from Sangamo and a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Easley.

Surviving are her three children, Robert Roper Jr. (Debbie), Cara Roper Hunt (Mark) and Donita Roper Crowe; one brother, Delroy Langston; 12 grandchildren, Michelle McMahan (Josh), Jessica Barnwell (Adrian), BJ Lee Roper, Jessica Walker (Scotty), Samantha Pritchett (Bradley), Christina Roper, Victoria Roper, Bryan Hunt (Christina), Rebecca Hunt, Caroline Roper, Amanda Johnson (Matthew) and David Roper Jr.; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Along with her husband and parents, Wanda was preceded in death by one son, David Thomas Roper; one son-in-law, Ray Crowe; two sisters, Nina Lee and Ruby Elmore, and two brothers, Kenneth Langston and Eldon Langston.

Funeral services were held on July 17 in the Dillard Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Troy Crain officiating. The committal service and burial were held at Oolenoy Baptist Church cemetery.

CAROL ELIZABETH GRAY NICHOLS

EASLEY — Carol Elizabeth Gray Nichols, 66, departed this life on Wednesday, July 15, 2020.

She was preceeded in death by her father, Bill “Farmer” Gray, and mother, Edna Wike Gray.

Carol was born in Greenville in 1954. She and her family moved from Greenville to Anderson and finally Easley, where Carol enjoyed school from first grade to graduation at Easley High School. She was part of the “Class of ‘72,” which experienced sixth grade at Easley High School while their elementary school was under construction. They were the “pets” of the high school, with their own page in the Green Wave yearbook.

After high school graduation, Carol attended Anderson Junior College (University) and transferred to Clemson University, where she received a bachelors of science degree in education and later masters degree in education. Carol spent a very productive and rewarding career with Pickens County teaching hundreds if not thousands of students, largely at A.R. Lewis Elementary.

Upon retirement, Carol devoted herself to Feed A Hungry Child Pickens County Inc., a vitally important weekend nutrition backpack program. Three words are especially appropriate to describe Carol: an “intensely loyal friend.” She was loyal to her alma mater, to her students, to her schools, to her family and to her many friends.

Survivors include brother, Robert “Bob” Gray (Susan) of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; nieces, Rachel Gray and Frances Brent (Stuart); and grandniece, Tallulah Gray Brent. Juno Dog will miss her immensely and will live with Bob and Susan on their Tennessee farm.

A private family memorial will take place at a later date.

There will be a celebration of life gathering at Smithfields Country Club in Easley on Sunday, July 26, at 4 p.m.

ESSIE JEAN HOLLIDAY

LIBERTY — Essie Jean Holliday, 83, of Liberty, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, at Brookdale Assisted Living of Central.

Born in Liberty, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Etta Dickard Gilstrap. She graduated from Liberty High School in 1954. She was a homemaker who loved cooking and spending time with her family. She was a longtime member of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Jason Walton Holliday of the home; three daughters, Melinda Siefert (Scott) of Taylors, Nancy Smith (Dwayne) of Liberty and Julie Burgess (Tony) of Liberty; two sisters, Evelyn Campbell of Florence and Millie Skinner (Johnny) of Easley; a brother-in-law, Rabon Holliday (Eleanor) of Easley; a sister-in-law, Peggy Holliday of Easley; five grandchildren, Jason, Hannah, Sydney, Jared (Allison) and Jamie; four great-grandchildren, Cross, Jadyn, Bella and Justice; and a special friend, Shelly Bowers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Gilstrap; and a sister, Helen Mahaffey.

Private funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Holliday will be conducted by Rev. Doug Goss and Rev. Jamie Burgess in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be at Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery.

DOROTHY ‘DOT’ V. MAHAFFEY

EASLEY — Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Vaughn Mahaffey, 85, wife of the late Alvin Julius Mahaffey, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.

Born in Pickens County, a daughter of the late Clyde H. Vaughn and the late Inez Jennings Vaughn, Mrs. Mahaffey attended Easley High School and was retired from Easley Textiles. She was an active member of Rock Springs Baptist Church for 74-plus years, where she taught GAs and the Sunbeams, served on the Church Care Ministry and belonged to the Victory Bible Fellowship Sunday School Class.

Dot was a faithful servant of God and devoted to her church, husband, children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her.

Surviving are four sons, Dale Mahaffey (Debbie), Dan Mahaffey, Bo Mahaffey (April) and Scott Mahaffey, all of Easley; a sister, Rema Holcombe (John) of Easley; three grandchildren, Danielle M. Graham (Lucas), Alexis Mahaffey and A.J. Mahaffey; numerous special nieces and nephews; and special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mahaffey was predeceased by a sister, Betty Sisk.

Funeral services were held on July 17 at Rock Springs Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
