JAY HAROLD PATTERSON

PICKENS — Jay Harold Patterson, 80, husband of the late Karen Painter Patterson, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2020.

A native of Pickens County, Mr. Patterson was born Aug. 23, 1939, a son of the late Nina Salina Galloway Patterson and Roland Patterson.

Harold loved his family and had a passion for farming. He loved the old ways, and his joy was passing these traditions on to his children and grandchildren. He was even able to enjoy many days in his garden with his great-grandchildren.

When he was not gardening, making sausage or processing deer, he loved to eat breakfast at Hardee’s and talk with friends. He was also an avid Clemson fan.

Harold spent his last few years up until his last days reminiscing of his childhood growing up in Pickens. He spoke often of travel with a mule or horse and wagon, with only an occasional car passing by. He talked of his many trips to the corn mills around Holly Springs, coon hunting with an oil lantern and long, hot days plowing in the garden, wishing for thunder so the mule would break free and run to the barn.

He longed for the times when neighbors truly took care of one another. He often said that back then, when one neighbor had a problem, we all had a problem. Now the old homeplace is gone and many things have changed, but we will always cherish the memories and hold close the traditions of this keeper of the old ways. We look forward to meeting again at that homeplace in the sky, where the green green grass of home will never fade. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
We would like to thank family, friends and neighbors for all their help and kindness; especially his sister, Carol, who cared for him in her home his last six months of life.

We extend a special thank you to Homestead hospice for the incredible care given and compassion shown to Harold and our family during his time of illness. Our hearts are filled with gratitude when we think of all the love and encouragement we have received from so many during these difficult times.

Survivors include his daughter, Donna Patterson (Randy) Bane; son, Daniel Scott (Desiree) Patterson; grandchildren, David (Lydia) Bane, Rebecca (Matthew) Morgan, Bridger Bane, Colter “Sweet Pea” Bane, Tori Wyatt, Dixie (Cory) Arnold, Madelyn (Josh) Juniel and Mason Patterson; great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Boone, Tucker, and Silas Morgan, Rob, Chloe Ben and Annalise Bane, C.J., Grayson, Kloe, Willie and Lilligene Watt and Stevie Arnold.
