EASLEY — The School District of Pickens County is a self-professed “oddball” among other districts in the state because it started the school year fully staffed.

In their final tune-ups before the regular season, Easley, Liberty and Pickens each played in the Easley jamboree last Friday. The Red Devils opened the action with a 35-7 win over the West-Oak Warriors. Pickens took the field next dropping a 27-6 half to the Seneca Bobcats. Finally, Easley took on Rabun Gap Nacoochie High School out of Georgia falling 34-7 in one half of play. Roper offers update on area roads, SC 183

COUNTY — Although S.C. Highway 183 is not a county road, local officials cannot “turn a blind eye to it,” Pickens County administrator Ken Roper said last week.
Roper gave an update on area roads during a Facebook Live video recorded last Friday.
Some have called Highway 183 one of the most dangerous roads in the Upstate, if not in all of South Carolina, he said.
“Dangerous highway, crowded highway,” Roper said.
S.C. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials have said they “don’t really have anything in the works for Highway 183,” he said.
“I know they’ve got a lot of problems around the state they’ve got to take care of, but we’ve got to figure out a way to fix this,” Roper said.
Rep. Neal Collins and Pickens United have been trying to find funding solutions to tackle S.C. 183, including applying to the South Carolina State Transportation Infrastructure Bank (STIB), which is meant to fund big projects, he said.

Florida man drowns in Pickens County
COUNTY — A Florida man drowned near The Wall at Lake Jocassee on Saturday morning.
Anthony Reno, 50 , of Fleming Island, Fla., became unresponsive following a recreational dive in Lake Jocassee on Saturday.
Reno was transported to Prism Health Oconee Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to a release from Chief Deputy Coroner Andrew P. Wilson, an autopsy is scheduled for a later date.
Reno’s death is being investigated by Pickens County Coroner’s Office, Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
