Tackling pizza, bitcoin and world hunger

This is a three-part column, so if the first part doesn’t grab you, move on to the next, etc.

So … here goes:

Part 1

The pizza wars are heating up in Easley. It seems like a new pizza joint is popping up about every other week.

According to my map search, there are 19 pizza restaurants in Easley! That seems like a lot to me.

I can see having two or three places you like to get pizza from, but are people really always looking for a new place to

When we are weak, He is strong

How much grace does it take to love our enemies and those who have hurt us? Well, that’s a good question.

Tragedies occur all around us, and it’s true we are heartbroken and disturbed, but what happens if we are personally offended or our family and friends are harmed? I admit that I do not always have the character of Christ when I’m being threatened or attacked. Many times, my first reaction is to retaliate because it’s a part of our old nature, but I agree that people need to be

Local food bank needs your help

If you’re on the other side of the fence — able to donate to the food bank rather than visiting to use its services — your local pantry can surely use your help. Running them is more complicated and expensive than it might seem!

The food bank in my town gets most of its food from the main supplier in the state, which gets its support

Homeless vet falls through the cracks

The Department of Veterans Affairs creates numerous programs to deal with homeless veteran populations — and this is all well and good. But it’s the individual homeless vet who can fall through the cracks.

The VA Office of Inspector General reports about a veteran (I’ll assume here it was a guy) who had multiple physical conditions on top of severe cognitive impairment. Years ago, he was given housing

What is a father?

Dear Editor,

Hard to believe Father’s Day is here. Seems only yesterday it was Christmas. What is a father? You have your own opinions no doubt and so do I.

To me a father is someone that works hard to provide for his family. Sacrifices to see that they have a decent life. Doesn’t loafer when having time off. Instead

How to make Father’s Day more enjoyable for Dad

Dad gets to be king of his castle at least one day during the year. Come mid-June, children near and far scramble for ideas to treat their fathers to a special day and award him with gifts for being a role model, provider and confidante. Father’s Day activities should be centered around Dad’s interests. With that in mind,

– Great gift ideas for Dad –

Father’s Day is right around the corner and that means many children, spouses and other family members will be scrambling to locate the perfect gifts for the men in their lives.

Put away those coupons for neckties and remote control caddies. There’s a good chance Dad wants something a little less cliche and more in tune with his interests. If you think carefully about gift ideas,  there’s bound to be something that will be a perfect fit.

Sports

If Dad follows a particular team or sport, gifts inspired by his love of a favorite team are a surefire bet for success. Team jersies, game memorabilia, tickets to

Father’s Day – A History

On July 19, 1910, the governor of the U.S. state of Washington proclaimed the nation’s first “Father’s Day.” However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that the day became a nationwide holiday in the United States.

MOTHER’S DAY: INSPIRATION FOR FATHER’S DAY

The “Mother’s Day” we celebrate today has its origins in the peace-and-reconciliation campaigns of the post-Civil War era. During the 1860s, at the urging of activist Ann Reeves Jarvis, one divided West Virginia town celebrated “Mother’s Work Days” that brought together the mothers of Confederate and Union

Library kicks off summer program

COUNTY — The Pickens County Library System recently announced the return of its annual summer reading program.

This year’s theme is “Oceans of Possibilities.” The program began on June 6 and runs until July 31. All Pickens County residents were set to receive a postcard in the mail that included a summer reading log.

To complete the program, participants can choose to read 10 books, complete 10 activities or a combination of both options to equal 10. Once all 10 activities are completed, postcards can be returned to any library location. More postcards will be available at all library branches.

After completing the summer reading program, participants ages 17 and younger will receive an “Oceans of Possibilities” prize pack, as well as have their name entered into a drawing for more prizes. Adults who complete the summer reading program will receive a PCLS tote bag (while supplies last) and an entry into a drawing for prizes. Visit the library system website at pcls.fyi for a list of possible prizes.

The library will also have special performances all summer long, which will include musical theater, storytelling, crafts, live animal presentations and more.

For a schedule of performances, pick up a calendar at any library location or visit pcls.fyi.
