Daniel’s Williams wins state XC title

CENTRAL — The amount of effort that Ashby Williams pours into honing her craft gives her ample reason to go into races with confidence.

But add in a touch of fear, and she’s particularly hard to hang with — something her opposition on Saturday morning in Columbia learned the hard way.

The Daniel High School sophomore was at her very best at Clemson University’s Sandhill Research and Education Center, as she captured the individual Class 3A

Six Mile woman killed in wreck

SENECA — A Six Mile woman died and a man was airlifted to the hospital after a head-on crash early Saturday morning near Seneca.

Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis identified the woman as 52-year-old Tina Kokay.

The accident happened around 6:15 a.m. on S.C. Highway 130 — also known as Rochester Highway — at Waterford Farms Lane, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. David Jones. Jones said Kokay was driving east on Highway 130 in a Chevrolet Volt. A 2000 Ford Expedition driven by Brett Millwood was traveling west on the highway, crossed the centerline and hit the car head on, according to Jones. Jones and Addis said Kokay died at the scene.

Millwood was airlifted by helicopter to a North Carolina hospital, according to Jones. He didn’t say if there were other passengers in the two vehicles.

A Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is investigating the crash.

COUNTY — With the fall athletic season nearing its end, the first signing period of the year is here for high school athletes, and students from Pickens and Liberty have already taken advantage by signing to compete at the next level.

Pickens High School hosted the first signing event last week, with Macie Gentry and Cooper O’Sullivan signing to continue their athletic careers next fall.

Gentry, a multi-year starter and 2021 Class 4A state champion on the Pickens volleyball team, will continue her volleyball career at North

Goodbye to one of country music’s greats

Back in 1980, when my wife Kathy and I were dating, she told me a story about the adventures she had at Myrtle Beach when she was 18, hanging out with some guys who played in a band at a club called the Bowery.

It was the summer of ‘73. The band was called Wild Country.

She showed me a picture of them and told me how great they were.

“They’re going to be famous someday,” she said. “They made a record.”

“Yeah, right,” I thought to myself, having made a record with my own band in 1973 and not yet

Get ready to shop small

Black Friday may be the longest day of the year. Used to, it was just the Friday after Thanksgiving. This year, the pre-Black Friday sales started well before Halloween.

Black Friday, of course, is the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, but there’s another day that puts me in the holiday spirit. It’s the day after Black Friday, Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is when people are encouraged to shop on Main Street instead of in the

Knowing God unites us

The opportunity to know God is the greatest invitation that has ever been given in the history of mankind. For those who have a passion to learn about Him and serve Him, we will never be able to tell Him enough how much we love and appreciate His love, grace and endless mercy.

There are supposedly more than 2 billion people on our planet who claim to be associated with the Christian faith, and you would think that every person within this family would be united in their love for God and one another. Sadly, this is not the case. When we study religious history and see the numerous groups that aggressively oppose each other, it leaves us with many

Lions use strong start to wallop Woodruff

CENTRAL — After falling into old habits with a slow start in their playoff opener against Southside, Daniel head coach Jeff Fruster didn’t want to see a repeat with the Lions hosting the Woodruff Wolverines in the second round on Friday night.

“Our start was a little less than what our expectation was last week, so I challenged our kids to get off the bus,” Fruster said.

The Lions seemed to take the message to heart, as they whooped the Wolverines from wire to wire in a 55-17 win to advance to the third round of the playoffs.

The biggest change from the previous week came in the play of quarterback Blaine Simons, who was able to attack

Green Wave continue to grow in Durrah’s second season

EASLEY — Building a high school football program is certainly a process, but most casual observers would agree that Easley’s football program is definitely on the upswing.

Building off of last year’s home playoff berth, the Green Wave finished 6-5 in 2022, making the state playoffs for a second consecutive year after finishing fourth in the region.

There were some big wins — including late comebacks over J.L. Mann and Pickens — and there were some games where the breaks didn’t go Easley’s way.

Graduating 24 seniors who have played a lot of football, including several
