GREENWOOD — Coming off a Class 3A state championship season in 2020, expectations were high for the Daniel High School football team this year, and the Lions have largely met those expectations, finishing a 5-0 run through their non-region schedule Friday with a 57-7 shellacking of the Emerald Vikings on the road.

Clemson’s struggles continue in 2OT loss against Wolfpack

RALEIGH, N.C. — Clemson struggled offensively as North Carolina State stunned the Tigers 27-21 in double overtime on Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The Wolfpack ran 96 plays to the Tigers’ 49 and maintained possession for 41:48 of regulation.

N.C. State (3-1, 1-0 ACC) successfully kept No. 25 Clemson (2-2, 1-1) out of rhythm offensively as it wore down the opposing defense.

County council passes tax hike to pay for road work

COUNTY — During their Sept. 13 meeting, Pickens County Council members officially did away with the county’s road user fee, raising property taxes by nearly 10 mills to provide a new source of funding to pave county roads.

The move was necessitated by officials’ fears that the $20 road user fee would not stand up to legal challenges, after the state Supreme Court ruled that a similar fee in Pickens County

‘Everlasting’ impact

Former Easley mayor, coach Larry Bagwell dies

EASLEY — Former Easley Mayor Larry Bagwell died Friday. He was 84.

The city of Easley released a statement on the former mayor’s passing, saying his “impact and decades worth of accomplishments run deep within the City of Easley and are everlasting.”

Easley High School’s football coach for 25 years, from 1967 to 1992, Bagwell led the Green Wave to two state championships.

He was inducted into the Easley High School Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Coaches Hall of Fame.

Bagwell was first elected to Easley City Council and in 2008 began serving his first of three terms as mayor.

Virus kills 19 more local residents

COVID-19 has claimed 330-plus lives in county

COLUMBIA — After a near record-high 16 COVID-19 deaths last week, Pickens County has once again seen another rise in death numbers this week, with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) reporting 19 COVID-19 deaths over the past seven days.

According to DHEC, there were 19 confirmed deaths and no probable deaths in the one-week period from last Tuesday to Monday, when the latest numbers were available.

Pickens County also remains the worst out of the state’s 46 counties in infection rate, with 18,217.4 cases
