SCDOT working on road projects across county
PICKENS — The South Carolina Department of Transportation’s 10-year strategic plan to rebuild South Carolina’s roads and bridges is making strides in Pickens County in its third year.
Crews are out in full force working to make roadways smoother and safer for the traveling public, according to a news
release from the department. The plan is funded by an annual 2-cent increase in the state’s gas tax for six years. The tax increase began on July 1, 2017.
SCDOT marked the beginning of the third year of the plan on July 1.
“We are currently at our highest level of activity on South Carolina’s roadways,” SCDOT spokeswoman Lauren Roeder said in the news release. “The four programs in

GREENVILLE — The federal government and area solicitors are teaming up in an effort to secure longer prison terms for gun charges.
U.S. Attorney Sherri Lydon and several Upstate solicitors announced the partnership Thursday morning at the Greenville County Courthouse.
“Reducing violent crime in South Carolina is a top priority of the United States Attorney’s Office,” Lydon said.
She said one of her biggest shocks after taking office was “just how many shots are fired on the streets of our communities.”
“Because of advances in technology, we now have equipment that can tell us how many shots are being fired in a

Appreciate your right to vote
I wasn’t around 100 years ago, but I can imagine what discussions about the radical notion of allowing women to vote must have sounded like around here in the year 1919.
“Well, you know we’ll be on the road to ruination if we let these ladies vote,” Jasper P. Goodbody might have said, snapping the strap on his suspenders for emphasis.
“Yeah, they’ll even try to elect a woman president one of these days and make a law requiring men to help out with the cookin’ and cleanin’,” his buddy Willie T. Melonhead might reply, spewing a stream of tobacco juice out the corner of his mouth to punctuate his disdain for the dystopian future he imagined women’s suffrage would bring about.
I’m sorry, ladies, but our Founding Fathers didn’t think y’all were smart

An ode to Cynthia’s ‘leaves’
Oh how majestic a tree may be
It fills one with inspiration
When Cynthia sees the leaves a-fallin’
They fill her with anticipation
When the ground is covered to the hilt
It makes her want to wilt
With nary a leaf left on a tree
They make her want to flee
But with rake so true and head so somber
She proceeds to give them all a number
Ah one, ah two, ah three
Aw, that’s too boring for thee
Methinks I shall name them

In memory of Harward
Dear Editor,
I was shocked and hurt to hear about Lucy Harward passing away. She was a very special, smart, kind lady who shared her talents with others at the Pickens Senior Center.
She founded the Fiber Arts Center there, where she taught fiber arts skills and actively volunteered. Her special creations are displayed there. She was recognized many times for her quilts and designed the quilt square for the

Save-A-Lot helps PHS
In the 10 years that the Pickens Save-A-Lot store has been opened, it has made many donations for the Pickens High School athletic department. The latest donation Save-A-Lot has made was with the help of its customers. At the beginning of September, the store had signs telling its customers that they could purchase a Gatorade for 99 cents that would go to the athletic department at PHS. The customers stepped up, buying 375 Gatorades in a month. Save-A-Lot went on to donate 25 more to make it an even 400. David Gravely with Little Debbie also donated 10 cases of water. Save-A-Lot wants to thank its wonderful customers for helping Pickens High School. Pictured are Blue Flame football players Lawson Maxey, Brady Batson and Jacob Nagle, along with Pickens head coach Chad Smith receiving the donation.
