Medicare open enrollment
It’s that time again. Every year we have the opportunity to make changes to our Medicare plans between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. We have the option of changing from original Medicare to an Advantage plan, or vice versa, or changing to a 
different Advantage plan. We also can change our Medicare Part D drug plan. The decisions aren’t easy. After all, we have to live with them for the next year.

Southern Wesleyan plans Showstopper Spectacular
CENTRAL — Show tunes will fill the air Sept. 27 and 28 as Southern Wesleyan University presents the Showstopper Spectacular Dessert Theatre, starting at 7 p.m. in Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center Auditorium.
“Showstopper Spectacular” is a musical revue featuring musical numbers from various Broadway shows such as “Mary Poppins,” “The Sound of Music” and “Sister Act.” A talented cast of singers includes current Southern Wesleyan students and community members. Gospel concert planned
The Mountain View Gospel Quartet will be perforning at the Hagood Community Center Auditorium at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. Tickets will be $5 at the door, with proceeds benefitting the center. Tours of historic Pickens house set for Saturday
PICKENS — Tours of the Hagood-Mauldin/Irma Morris Museum of Fine Arts, located at 104 Lewis St. in Pickens, will be available this Saturday, Sept. 21.
The house and gardens will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children and students under 18 years of age.

The organization is not a grief therapy group, but it does provide an opportunity for widowed persons to come together, make new friends and share conversation and food while finding a new beginning in life.

TRAVELERS REST — With heavy rains and lightning affecting the Upstate last 
Friday, many schools were forced to either cancel or find an alternate time to play scheduled high school football games.
Many schools elected to hit the gridiron on Monday night, and some canceled
altogether. The Pickens Blue Flame (1-3) and the Travelers Rest Devildogs (4-0) elected to get their game in on Saturday afternoon in a rare daylight contest.
The Blue Flame came in pounding the Devildogs early, jumping to a 3-0 lead, but as the very hot afternoon wore on, Travelers Rest managed to pull out a few big plays to pick up a 21-10 win.
“Big plays got us,” Pickens coach Chad Smith said after the game. “We try to build our program on discipline, effort and toughness. That is what got us today. We have got to do a better job. We have to get in there and find out to see

Red Devils shut out on soggy road trip to St. Joseph’s

GREENVILLE — Rolling thunderstorms threw a curve ball into Friday night football plans across the Upstate, but after some
doubt, the Liberty Red Devils were able to take the field on the road at St. Joseph’s late Friday night.
They may have wished they hadn’t.
In a soggy, plodding, rain-delayed and shortened game in Greenville, the Knights completely shut down the Liberty offense to come away with a 10-0 win.
After a lengthy delay before the game even kicked off, officials elected to abbreviate the game with 10-minute quarters and a 10-minute halftime, but even more than causing the delay, the weather played a major factor in the game by making the ball hard to hold on to for both teams.
The two teams combined for 10 fumbles — five apiece — and the Devils lost possession all five times they put the ball on the ground.

PIEDMONT — In high school football, the terrible thing about youth and inexperience is the 
possibility of enduring one-sided losses.
The great thing about youth, inexperience and one-sided losses is plenty of opportunities to learn from mistakes and grow.
The Easley Green Wave gained a season’s worth of experience in Saturday morning’s 64-3 defeat at the hands of nearby rival Wren. Friday night’s strong line of thunderstorms and torrential rain forced the postponement of the intense rivalry’s 2019 edition, with the teams abandoning hope after an altered 8:30 p.m. start and agreeing to meet again for an 11 a.m. Saturday kickoff.

After cancellation against Westside, Lions get final chance for region tuneup Friday

CENTRAL — With high school football teams from all over the area canceling their games on Friday night, Daniel and Westside continued to hold out hope that they could get their game in.
However, after almost two hours of delays, the contest was canceled, with no plans to make up the game.
“We never lost focus,” Daniel coach Jeff Fruster said. “It’s very unfortunate that we didn’t get a chance to come out against a very close opponent.”
Forecasts throughout the day called for scattered showers in the evening, but as game time approached, lightning wreaked havoc on the area. The Daniel game was pushed back to 7:45 p.m. originally before more and more delays came down.
Game time was pushed back to 8:15, 8:40 and finally 9:20, when it seemed like it was going to be played.
However, just minutes after the 9:20 start time was announced and the national anthem was played, officials made the call to cancel the game.

Clemson gets school-best 18th consecutive victory

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — No. 1 Clemson set a school record for consecutive wins with its 41-6 victory over Syracuse at the 
Carrier Dome on Saturday night.
The Tigers’ 18th consecutive win surpassed the mark of 17 set in 2014-15. The Tiger defense recorded eight sacks and held Syracuse to 187 yards of offense.
Trevor Lawrence set a new career high in passing yards in the Clemson win. Lawrence completed 22-of-39 passes for 395 yards and three touchdowns. The quarterback rushed for 42 yards and found the end zone in the second quarter for his third rushing touchdown of the season.
