Pickens High coach arrested

Police: Dorr provided alcohol, had sex with student

PICKENS — A former Pickens High School assistant coach was arrested last week after police said he had sex with a student after drinking alcohol with players and other teens.

Joshua Bennett Dorr, 29, of 179 Praters Creek Road in Pickens, was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sexual battery with a student, according to Pickens police chief Rodney Gregory. Dorr turned himself in to Pickens police at around 6 p.m. on Oct. 1.

Dorr, who was not a teacher at Pickens High, resigned his coaching position on Sept. 29 and was placed on trespass notice from the school.

SIX MILE — A remembrance ceremony for lifelong Six Mile resident Bill Holder was held on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Holder lived 98 years and two days. He and his wife, Ruby, had six children, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grand-children.

Holder spent all of his 98 years in Six Mile, repairing local residents’ appliances, well-pumps, water heaters, plumbing problems and electrical issues.

Region enters 1st stage of drought

UPSTATE — The Keowee-Toxaway Drought Management Advisory Group announced Tuesday that despite recent rainfall and cooler temperatures the Keowee-Toxaway River Basin entered Stage 1 of its Low Inflow Protocol (LIP).

Stage 1 is the second of five drought stages outlined in the LIP and recommends voluntary water conservation by water users across the basin. The Keowee-Toxaway River Basin is a tributary to the Savannah River Basin.

The LIP is a regional drought management plan used by major water users in the Keowee-Toxaway Basin to share responsibility and set priorities for water conservation. The plan outlines specific actions for each stage. Stages of the

County students improve scores on SAT

Daniel best in state among traditional public schools

COUNTY — Students in the School District of Pickens County improved their scores on the SAT in 2014, staying about the state average.

SDPC students earned an overall composite score of 1489, higher than the state average of 1429. The score was also higher than the SDPC’s score of 1483 last year.

Police seek suspect in Saturday truck theft

COUNTY — The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help to identify a person suspected of stealing a vehicle from a gas station early Saturday morning.

According to a release from the sheriff’s office, a 1999 Ford Ranger was taken from the Spinx gas station at 3785 Farrs Bridge Road in Easley, near the Dacusville community, at around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The truck was found on Blackberry Road in Greenville County a short time after the theft from the Spinx station, according to the release.

Daniel defensive back Admir Trapp was the only Pickens County player selected to play in the annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, set for Dec. 20 at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College. Trapp, seen here in action against Emerald earlier this season, is still weighing his college options after receiving a scholarship offer from Furman University recently. Other players of note from local teams’ regions selected for the team were receiver Markavious Adams and defensive back Kaleb Chalmers of Greenwood, quarterback Kelly Bryant of Wren, offensive lineman Zach Darst of Seneca and linebacker Brandon Burger of Powdersville.

 

Local wrestling club earns national honor

CENTRAL — The USA Wrestling organization has more than 24,000 registered clubs throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

This year, a total of just seven clubs were recognized as Gold Medal clubs.

Berkshire-Pickens Wrestling Club was one of them.

Faith Lutheran Church yard sale is October 17 and 18

PICKENS — Faith Lutheran Church will have its sixth annual yard sale October 17 and 18. Beginning at 7 a.m. Friday morning household items, clothing, books, furniture, holiday items and baked goods will be sold to help support the Gleaning House, a community food pantry.

PICKENS — The 2014 Attractions at the Amphitheater season will conclude with a performance featuring the Folsom Prison Gang on the Pickens Amphitheater stage on Friday, Oct. 17.
